Scarlet was not actually beautiful in the book. Selznick told Katherine Hepburn that she was not pretty enough to play the part which was bull. That's my only complaint about Leigh playing Scarlett in Gone With The Wind. Otherwise she was perfectly cast.

Can you even imagine if the biggest contenders for that role, Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn and even Norma Shearer did get to play her? I'm a huge fan of Bette but she was completely wrong for this part despite playing Jezebel, let's not even mention the other two. Miriam Hopkins was said to have been Margaret Mitchell's personal choice and Paulette Goddard almost got the role but she was completely off. In the end, they had to get a very beautiful actress to play Scarlett, a pretty face that could get away with all the bitching she did and still keep audiences interested out of pure acting talent. It had to be Vivien! haha

In every sense, there is this scale and enormity about her. So beautiful, so smart, so talented, so ambitious, so amorous, so loving, so difficult, so possessive, so carnal, so fun, so determined, so poised, so wicked, so charmed, so honoured and respected, but so troubled, so (ultimately) unwell. It’s strange how naturally you, as the viewer, can suspend disbelief and see Scarlett O’hara, Cleopatra, Blanche DuBois. Most people don’t have that kind of presence.

Vivien Leigh, the best actress and the most beautiful in history! What a very brave woman! Always in my Heart!

She was stunningly gorgeous and brilliant. Superb actress. A true star.

People assume that've you have a mental illness, your some how dumb. Every documentary that've ever seen about Vivien applied that she was actually very intelligent and intellectual. She read all sorts of literature about space to romantic novels. All her co stars said that she was very sharp witted and a great hostess. Hedy Lamar had a great IQ, so did Vivien Leigh. Just thought that I'd add this comment. R.I.P. Vivien. You were a true Hollywood star. God bless you.❤🙏🙏🙏xx.

Unforgettable and unique as an actress. In Russia we had a film critic, who wrote a book about her, they were corresponding. In his book you could see a sequence of her close ups from Waterloo Bridge, when she all of a sudden recognizes her beloved one at the railway station. The way she expresses her emotions just with her eyes is unsurpassed. I admire Vivien Leigh. She is wonderful in all her films.

Her FACE was also modern mixed in with classic beauty. If Vivien was alive today she’d be the most naturally beautiful celebrity.

This was a really good mini doc. VL was beautiful in an "other worldly" sort of way.

This was a great but short documentary. Very interesting interviews and pictures. Vivien Leigh is one of my favorite actresses. Great beauty but also GREAT talent. She DOES remind me of a cat with her unusually green eyes and strange, catlike smile. It's too bad she didn't make more color films;only 4.She always looked so elegant and classy too.

I always thought the 2 most beautiful actress' in Hollywood back then were Elizabeth Taylor and Vivien Leigh and for me what separated them apart was Liz was an alright actress and Vivien was a GREAT actress!!

"She was born so Scarlett O'Hara could LIVE ". I believe Olivier was the worst decision she ever made. He was a pompous overactor who was jealous of her natural gifts born with on film, and likely to have a sadistic pleasure in making her feel inferior as an artist. Gorgeous women have ALWAYS been felt as lacking true talent in show business, and were humiliated and exploited. Just look what the great "Gentleman",Larry said about the great Hollywood Icon MARYLIN MONROE on his film "The Prince and the Showgirl", it's on KZread and note the sadistic pleasure in exploiting MARILYN he gets talking to a journalist. Absolutely devastating. Many decades ago, I met Karl Malden at a party in New York City and told him my parents spent their honeymoon in New York City in 1947 and saw him in Streetcar named desire on Broadway, he smiled and said: "Did they NOTICE me?"hahaha... I told him my parents loved him and felt more pain for HIM than Blanche!!! The Broadway Blanche was also British JESSICA TANDY, I asked him about Marlon Brando and LEIGH... About her he said: "She was a genius as Blanche, I was in awe of her and couldn't believe I was acting with Scarlett O'Hara!!!". I have always believed Williams created Blanche from Scarlett...and so brilliantly done! Vivien Leigh brought that English European Elegance to both characters, something the American actresses who auditioned for the coveted role of Scarlett O'Hara didn't naturally have, I'm sure DAVID Selznick loved it in casting her.

I was thrilled to find a two display cases from these wonderful archives when I was in London in 2017. The items from Streetcar were especially interesting to me as I love Tennessee Williams and Leigh's two roles in two of his major film versions. The V&A is AMAZING!

Her beauty is timeless just like that of Nefertiti who lived 3000 years ago.

6:39 It truly was “an incredible ordeal, the filming of [Gone with the Wind].” Not only was Vivian Leigh in almost every single scene of the film, not only was the script changed almost daily, not only did she have to wear the heavy and confining clothes of the day in the heat, but she had to do it all under the incredibly bright and hot lighting for Technicolor filming that the camera technician described as working in Death Valley. The director, Victor Fleming, deliberately goaded her and angered her throughout the filming process. She apparently chain smoked between scenes to deal with the stress. And to top it off, she wasn’t allowed by the studio to see her partner, Laurence Olivier, at her house-iirc she saw him rarely or never-during the filming. They had guards placed around her residence so her married partner could not come to see her (also married) and cause a scandal, because the studio wanted to tightly control her public image. It was a terrible ordeal, and she still shines so brightly through the entire movie.

So brilliantly put together. She was astonishing actress.

A great actress the first time I saw Gone with the wind, she captured me she's one of the reasons that I love old movies. besides she could play the on screen one the best norodic.

And only twenty films under her belt. WOW, THATS HISTRIONIC!!!

Many many years ago I went to the cinema to see a revival of A Streetcar Named Desire. I was especially looking forward to seeing Brando again, but found that I couldn't take my eyes off of Vivien Leigh. Someone once said that after the film version of Streetcar there was no need for any other actress to play Blanche DuBois, that Vivien had hit every note of the role so perfectly that it was complete.

Now I know she was from England. Beautiful lady.

Streetcar Named Desire was and still very disturbing to me. Excellent performances. Tennessee Williams always presented women as helpless and dependent. Maggie the Cat started out weak but she prevailed so maybe his viewpoint was changing. My sister wrote a term paper in English class regarding Williams portrayal of women.

@@amybaker4654but he also had a sympathy toward women living in an age where they had no power, his sister, to whom he was extremely close, was mentally ill (she was the inspiration for Laura in the Glass Menagerie) I think that Williams felt a sense of fragility of desire and ambition thwarted at least in some of his female characters (who usually were the most important characters in his plays, it is the men who are either ciphers (like Tom or even the "gentleman caller" in Menagerie) or brutal meat heads driven by their sexuality like Stanley. My favorite play in many ways is Summer and Smoke where Alma (the name means Soul) cannot bring herself to act on her attraction to the doctor next door (constrained by the mores of the time when women were expected to repress desire) yet ends up as a whore basically.

I think Tennessee Williams was simply a man of his time, when any “properly” raised gentlemen AUTHENTICALLY, and NATURALLY saw the man’s role as protectors, leaders, and providers for women in general...Men very much still had manners, honor, and respect toward women then...Not all of course but most..Because it did not end well if another gentleman saw a man being abusive, lewd, and disrespectful to a female in public for sure, and if a man was abusive behind closed doors, they would have that females family to deal with...Etc...Men were still the primary providers, protectors of women, of course he saw things that way in general but knew there was those unusual cases at that time, where women had to be the backbone too, in a multitude of ways because families were much bigger than today!

I fell in love with this woman when I was a child and my love will live forever!

They don't glow more beautifully than in A Streetcar Named Desire. You can see her protesting with her eyes about her bipolar, yet that fire past the tempest. The very realisation that how hard it must have been to go on with the burden of her illness only to have it grow on her over the course of the film, almost like letting the fire consume her. There has not been one instance where I haven't watched that movie without crying, such was the exuberance of her pain. But she always possessed that fiery gleam in her eyes. And I'm quite sure that's why she was cast as Scarlett

It must be something special with you British. First time I was in Gibraltar..Spain. My husband and I was on the top of this famous Hill and later wandered around. In an open place there were a restaurant and I heard the english language...and suddenly I got a feeling of beeing Home.. And I am a norwegion with wiking ancestors...and have never been in England..but I never forget this feeling of beeing home..only from hearing the language...perhaps it was of spirituel art. Special it was...whatever..

Wish the play Macbeth with Vivienne starring as Lady Macbeth had been filmed. By all accounts she was fantastic in the part.

The thing that struck me was Claire Bloom was talking about the Olivier's marriage difficulties when she herself had an affair with Lawrence while he was married to Vivien.

Simply not true.Olivier would have dissuaded her from a career in the theatre if anything.He simply didn't care for film making,so it would have made more sense to encourage her to make MORE films.Her decision to turn her back on Hollywood was her decision,she hated the place and was only too happy to devote her time and talent to the English classical tradition on stage.

Olivier had her convinced that being on the stage was 'real' acting. Olivier didn't like Hollywood. It was to her detriment. She even herself knew that she really didn't have the voice to be great on stage. It was considered too light and high pitched. She became good on stage, but her true talents were in front of the camera. She understood the camera better than even Olivier did on screen. But she wanted to stay with him in the UK.You're wrong when you say Olivier encouraged her to act in films in Hollywood. He encouraged her to act on stage. Read Anne Edwards biography. Before David Selznick had to cut her loose, he had to sue her because she wouldn't come back to the US and act in movies to honor a contract. No, Olivier did not encourage that until much later in their marriage.

Vivien Leigh did not like Clark Gable. He had problems with his teeth and had bad breath and she complained about it often. That made me respect more, since they had quite a lot of love scenes. It takes a great actress to not show it how she really felt about him.
