The Vintage Pokemon Card Crash EXPLAINED.

Ойын-сауық

A new Dark Era has emerged; Vintage Pokémon Cards seem to be heading for a complete downward trajectory!
Vintage Pokémon Cards have always been the cornerstone of Pokemon Collecting. Most people would recognise Pokemon cards from older eras, particularly the 1999 Base Set era.
Though an interesting shift has taken place, Vintage Pokémon Cards seem to be becoming less valuable. Collecting enthusiasts are avoiding vintage and are not willing to pay the crazy premium that some of these cards demand.
Now, a lot of these shifts happened during a time when everyone thought anything related to Pokemon was valuable, and the demand was due to an overinflated amount of hype that didn't really correlate with collectibles. As the dust has settled, it's left a lot of eyes on Vintage, and people are slightly uninspired with Vintage cards. It seems the market has gone incredibly quiet.
However, it may be an opportune time to secure some of your favourite vintage classics, seeing as the prices have become relevantly consumer-friendly. It's always a good time to strike while it's quiet!

I'm a collector and I do care about quality. But I prefer pack fresh clean raw, I don't need a company or to pay a premium for some company to tell me the card is in good condition. Occasionally I'll pick up a slab if I really like the look of the slab. I also prefer slabs with a report, so TAG, ACE etc. Collect the card not the grade y'all.

Most PSA 8s and some PSA 9s are around the price of raw "near mint" cards, and they're generally in better shape. At the moment, if you mainly buy online, and you're not able to closely inspect cards before purchase, you're almost always better off buying graded. I've completed a handful of vintage 1st ed binders by cracking open PSA 7s and 8s.

Definitely still feel there’s a great opportunity in vintage it’s clear there’s a retrace but vintage will represent the roots of the hobby forever. Modern is just more relevant making it a “keeping up with the jones’ “ situation IMO. Even modern alt arts saw a huge dump at one point not long ago. Modern grails are also simply more affordable in psa 10 than vintage grails and that’s going to be a price barrier for many. Great video some things I would contest but it’s all very interesting to see how others think about the hobby. Good vid 😎

95 percent of people who collect Pokémon don’t grade though. They just want the cards. That 95% wants what is in front of them, modern. As more modern opens and less is available, modern cards rise in price. What is going to cause vintage to rise ? Another pandemic maybe? But no one wants that and if you are banking on it that’s kinda awful. As vintage gets older there are less people around who remember or care about it, the artwork gets better and better and the pool of people interested shrinks. There will always be a place for it, but alt arts are the ones that will be valued in 20 years by kids who can’t afford them now.

Is it not a bit deceptive to compare average sales today to a single, exceptional, record-setting sale from 2020? Wouldn't comparing the average prices in each term give us a more accurate picture of how vintage cards have performed over the past few years? It's not as though most people bought, say, the 1st Ed Jolteon for $1150 -- that was one guy. Most people, even in the middle of the hype, were paying somewhere in the range of $350-500 for the card.

The important take away is that pokemon cards are well above where they were pre covid and don't appear to be going down. Tournament attendance is at an all time and the original collectors all have kids now. I anticipate the market to stay hot for at least another 5-7 years but truthfully with a new generation and older collectors coming back into the market it may stay high for a very long time.

It’s funny, when I came back to the hobby in 2021 I hated modern and loved vintage (due to nostalgia). However, now the nostalgia has worn off, the ‘appeal’ of older cards which are just holos is nowhere near the big modern cards. I think a lot of people feel the same hence the drops. Nothing beats 1999-2000 though!

I accidentally stumbled back into the hobby when McDonald’s put 25th anniversary cards into happy meals and my girlfriend brought one home to me. I proceeded to get two happy meals for lunch for like 2 weeks straight to get the cards thinking they would be worth a lot after the promotion ended. They currently aren’t worth much but it got me into going to card stores and buying packs and when I realized there was “alt arts” I bought a booster box of evolving skies when it first came out. Didn’t pull any alt arts in the whole damn box which made me start spending even more. Now I’m at a point where I can’t control myself if I see any sword and shield booster packs at a CVS or Walgreens 😂 they really reeled me back in like it was 1999.

People think they will retire using sealed products from the current modern era know nothing about collecting and investing, the difference between current modern and current vintage is back in the day 99% of people didn't treat it as a collectible, we as kids played with cards, they got trashed and lost, right now Pokémon is printing insane amounts of cards like never before and everything is kept in perfect condition, there are massive sealed collections and the market will be flooded with products form this era. Vintage will always carry that value because is the beginning of the hobby and will be more scarce. Now it's a good time to buy because of this hype correction that didn't make sense. Go check the mid era, the prices are so low because nobody gives a damn about them, in 20 years nobody will give a fk about 99% of the cards from today because modern things will be the hot thing and what is modern today will just be another random set from 20 years ago.

Pretty simple, vintage is popular among the old heads like myself that had them as a kid. Side by side modern artwork is superior to vintage. Its also cheaper and can be had in mint condition. A modern alt art Gengar is superior to a Fossil Gengar. I love a classic but if you were looking at a display case no question which catches your eye more. Some of the sets have 20x smaller print runs than todays cards and they are 20 years old... You think its tough taking a 2020+ out of a pack and grading it? Of course it will get a 9 or 10. Try having a card in a binder in an attic or garage for 20 years then grading it. That and you basically called the older collectors of Pokemon, novices. So untrue, Its the more established collectors in their mid 30s that grew up with Pokemon who are even buying the larger cards...

7s can be fine as far as condition is concerned, but a 7 has never been a value add for any cards. You can generally get 7s for considerably less than raw "near mint" copies of the same card -- that's probably what's meant by the "junk" comment. That said, if you're just looking to fill out your collection with NM/LP cards, you can do so at a considerable discount if you buy 7s. I've cracked a number of 7s and 8s for binder collections. It's cheaper and more reliable (with respect to condition) than buying ungraded.

So calling it downfall of vintage is huge overstatement imho. It is downfall only for stupid fomoers who came in 2019 and 2020 and felt like pokemon is going to the moon for eternity. For long term collectors/holders the cards still made huge profit even if they would totally skip the covid era and tried to sell them now. But truth is that i can imagine the vintage getting even lower than it is now. So we will see.

This price correction wasn’t limited to pokemon vintage. People drove up prices for mtg, sports cards, comics, and everything in between in 2020 for both vintage and newer items. They all saw meteoric drops in prices once speculators pulled back. For vintage the key cards will be the most stable and liquid in the long run.

It’s refreshing to get information like that and not have opinions put on the viewer so thank you for that 👍 even if you state your own opinions I’d love to see if the first edition Zard becomes the micky mantle of 2050. Selling for over a million dollars in PSA 10 etc etc. it’ll be super interesting to see, but also the experience of opening sealed product continues to be the crux of the hobby. These boxes of sword and shield/scarlet and violet could definitely be what people focus on in that time frame because they want to relive their childhood of opening them nowadays. It’s just fun thinking about it Keep up the great content! Loving every video!

Your channel has been excellent guidance and thanks for putting out calm and collected videos! I'm part of the 90's kid group buying vintage for myself now at early 30s. Didn't catch the craze during covid, but the classic story of 151 pulled me back in. I was never into grading and/or buying slabs, always felt unnecessary and scam-ish by companies just creating an artificial product/demand to sell and market. I also prefer the raw card in a binder, in-hand, or in a toploader storage. Thankfully didn't get caught up during the covid craze as I would definitely be upset if my then purchases' value plummeted so hard to today's numbers. That being said, my vintage buys I mostly just pay attention to condition - I tend to buy minimum LP, and NM when the price difference isn't massive percentage-wise. As I see it, the boat has sailed in treating vintage as investments, and their price won't be jumping massively any time soon. I also got a bit involved in the investing side of collecting - booster boxes, PC ETBs, etc. which also led to purchasing some 9 and 10 slabs of modern SWSH for speculation which have definitely paid off. Though it was interesting, the first slabs I bought my first thoughts was along the lines of, dang, the slabs are kinda nice. Modern does feel way nicer in comparison, but I need tho vintages for collecting.. I've been buying 1-2 copies of vintage to collect and possibly sell the second, 2-4 copies of modern for collecting, and re-selling.

The assertion that quality trumps scarcity vs simply being a reflection of a different category of mania is ironic given the selective dunking on people paying high prices during a different period of mania. Like the content. Like modern era of cards a lot. Weird takes on this particular video though.

It’s definitely had the dust settle and land at their more realistic post boom prices for a lot of vintage, particularly PSA/BGS 9 and 10s. They also definitely seem like safe collecting (not investing) options at the moment as there isn’t the volitility of the modern alt art market. There also won’t be any low pop chase cards like the vintage era as even alt arts are in the thousands at psa 10s. There could be movement at 30 year anniversary slightly but it is just good to enjoy the vintage cards and at least enjoy modern alts bringing the thrill of the hobby to new collectors and modern day.

Honestly I think buying anything below PSA 10 for modern (maybe a 9 simply as an expensive case to hold your cards for PC), isn’t worth it. When it comes to vintage, I think people are just realizing that anything PSA 8 and below isn’t worth it, and the overall value of the cards went down because it was “buy anything” before, and now it’s “buy what is rarer and more unique.” In the long run vintage 8’s and above will do well, but anything below that likely won’t hold up. The best long run play is finding holos, ex’s, gold stars, etc., in 8’s and above of POPULAR Pokémon. We still have some years before vintage goes up again, but it will happen.

Idk if it’s a valid argument to take the extra step to crack it and possibly damage it in the process. Part of the thrill of collecting is the rarity. In pokemon cards, due to the global demand, rarity and price go hand in hand. Vintage PSA 10s will remain high due to scarcity and those higher grades will attract investors and collectors. People are more aware of grading nowadays so lot of modern cards are sent for grading straight out the pack. As a collector myself, I think I'd rather have PSA 10 modern cards compared to PSA6 vintage. I could build a nice modern PSA 10 collection on an affordable budget knowing as well there is potential for them to mature... rather than bang average PSA vintage grades knowing that there will always be higher grades out there

I finished Basic, Fossil, and Jungle back in 2010 (I was short 11 cards from my initial childhood collection) and the most I spent on a card was maybe $15. They were so cheap, I eventually started replacing my older worn cards just for the hell of it. I was 19 and got my first job - so why not complete my childhood dream? None of my cards are graded and most were used in deck shufflers and enjoyed by a small child. Adults ruin everything by overhyping this nonsense which always leads to a correction in the market anyway. I have to admit, the whole nostalgia industry has worn out its welcome. We talk more about the 90s nowadays then we did in the actual 90s. There are no more "Remember when..." moments because everyone now remembers and makes content about everything. When the only people buying old Pokemon cards or 90s Batman toys or even vintage band tees are 30-40 year olds that are just in it to wheel and deal their "investments"...then it's time to tap out. Buy things to enjoy having them instead of over paying them then having to tell your sob story as you post a market place listing two years later. Every Facebook group is mostly just ads for people that always magically have these toys and cards for sale. Everyone is a salesman preaching about "how these are my absolute favorite cards/toys in MINT CONDITION but...I have to sell them." It stops being fun.
