US leadership had no idea what victory would look like in Vietnam from the outset. Westmoreland was convinced a military victory was possible, almost nobody else in US government agreed. Every US policy-maker was convinced some form of intervention in Vietnam was advantageous to the US, although almost none believed that a decisive military victory in Vietnam was possible without any less than a million plus US troops in Vietnam. After a year of Operation Rolling Thunder, a negotiated settlement with North Vietnam was always the goal. We lost the war.

The Chinese defeated and occupied Vietnam for centuries. The Champa kings built a kingdom in the south part of what we now call Vietnam in the 5th Century. They controlled the trade of the South China Sea. Angor Wat temples were built and later abandoned in what is Cambodia and Vietnam.

1968 during the battle of Hue City 4 US Marine Battalions defeated 4 NVA Regiments (a regiment is like 4-6 battalions if you dont know) the Americans did not lose militarily they actually won all the major engagements but it was a purely defensive war and everytime the Communist NVA and Vietcong came at them and threw everything they had, like during the Tet Offensive in 68, the Americans won and because of Air superiority and firepower superiority usually inflicted triple the causalities minimum on the Vietnamese, The NVA and Vietcong only won once the Americans had left and the ARVN could not last alone but the Vietcong and NVA couldn't do that for 8 years while the Americans were therer from 65 till 73 ish roughly because it was a slow pullout that took time to get all the troops out, the war effort lost support back in America because people realized fighting a purely defensive war is pointless and that it was just so the industrialists and arms dealers can make money, and so they eventually left, but the idea that the Vietnamese are invincible and sent the Americans back running with its tail between its legs is not accurate and i think you're very naive if you believe that friend.

@@Croatian-Knight. Myth: Ho Chi Minh was a nationalist and a benevolent leader of his people Fact: Ho Chi Minh was a dedicated communist and slaughtered hundreds of thousands of his fellow countrymen. Ho Chi Minh was a founding member of the French Communist Party in 1920 and founded the IndoChinese Communist Party in 1930. He spent four years training in Russia and became a member of the Comintern. He was not just a member of the Comintern. He was the protege of Dmitry Manuilsky, right hand man to both Stalin and Lenin. He was a dedicated Stalinist who never swayed from his desire to forward the cause of international communism. He turned his fellow countrymen over to the French for money and to eliminate his rivals while consolidating his power. He "purged" the North Vietnamese landowner class, killing at least 50,000 (some estimates are as high as 900,000!) of them for the "crime" of being financially independent. He slaughtered and imprisoned hundreds of thousands of his own countrymen in the South in an effort to rid himself of all opposition. Myth: The South Vietnamese government denied the people a free election on unification [related to the guarantee of free elections written into the Geneva Accords] Fact: Neither South Vietnam nor the US were a signing party to the Geneva Accords. Neither, therefore, had any legal obligation to abide by the agreement, which was between France and North Vietnam. Only France and North Vietnam were signatories to the 1954 Geneva Accords. South Vietnam was not invited. Neither was the US. The election was an addendum signed by no one. It had no force in law, and the North had no intention of allowing UN observers Before the ink on the agreement was dry, North Vietnam had already violated the agreement. Viet Minh communist troops in South Vietnam did not move to North Vietnam, a violation of the Geneva Accords. North Vietnam harassed and interfered with citizens attempting to move to the South, a violation of the Geneva Accords. One million still managed to leave. Viet Minh communists in South Vietnam immediately began using terror and violence to disrupt and destroy the South Vietnamese government.

you are right because the same deal nixon agreed to could have been done in 1968 before the election. William colby said it best. 'there was a time that i could not drive out of saigon without being shot at. But later, i was able to drive out of saigon without any attacks'. But Winning is now measured by the number of consumer products being made in Vietnam, so the usa Shareholder Class can profit more than ever (if it had made Nike shoes in usa). Ho Chi M wanted to be free, free of the japanese, free of the french and free to not have war profiteers (amercans) and their military industrial complex running Vietnam's economy. Gwbush did not serve in Nam, nor did trump. if either, or both, had died in Nam, there would have been a better america. gwbush cost many american lives with his two loser wars, both started with out any exit plan and without evidence., Bin laden was in paksitan by November 2001. and was not even killed by a GOPer. saudis control the GOP party and got the americans to invade iraq. that is called losing / as long as the Shareholder class gets their profits, which never go into the GDP (as per the GDP formula), the american deaths were worth every penny of their profits. 58,220 compare that number to the 87,141 deaths JUST in Florida due to the hoax. no one has gone to jail for using the hoax. 1.16mn+ deaths and the GOP call that 'winning' too. less slaves, less of the lower class, than nixon had killed in Nam God Bless and never bet on the USA when the Game is a war. no wins since the end of world war 2. not one.

We didn't win the war in Viet Nam. Sure we beat them on the battlefield but the north won in the end thanks to politicians. Nixon promised the North billions in reparations and that never happened. The politicians and the American civilians were sick and tired of pouring money into Viet Nam. And let's be honest, most Americans, including the military had never even heard of Viet Nam before the police action (not war). Remember, it was not a war by declaration and the USG tried to use that as an excuse to not pay for the agent orange damage done to our vets later on. So we cut the purse strings and left the south hanging without ammo and fuel to continue fighting anyway. The commies moved in and the rest is history. I could go on but those are some of the main points of why we didn't win.
