The Victory Vertical Upright Piano - Walkthrough & Review

Музыка

Is this just another virtual piano instrument, or is this something special, worth your money? That is the question I try to answer in this walkthrough and review of Crow Hills' new sample library The Victory Vertical Upright Piano.
The Victory Vertical upright piano, hand-crafted by Steinway and air-dropped to US troops during WWII, brought music to difficult times. Crow Hill has had the honourable task of preserving a recently refurbished original Victory Vertical. It's one of only a handful around the world that aren’t stuck in glass display cabinets. Thanks to its generous owner, Russell Emanuel (CEO of Extreme Music/Bleeding Fingers).

I’m trying hard to love it…not getting there yet. Can’t pay $129 for a gorgeous UI. I own ALL Crow has offered to date. And I always hope the very best for Christian…to the point that I pretty much Tuned Out Spitfire after he left. For me, he was always the Soul of Spitfire. Lovely people at Spitfire-and I’m sure they work ceaselessly. It was just that Christian struck me as the star of the show, that’s all… I have so many wonderful, expensive VST pianos. I recently returned to Spit for 2 hesrth & hollow products. As a Spitfire originals ($29) I would grab it…I’d buy 2…one for a friend!! If the opening sale price was $79, I’d buy it and immedistely have that feeling: I’m being 79 dollar’d to death . Then I’d think: ANOTHER piano to add to the pile. It’s striking me as a piano of convenience. I’ve got wonderful tool. I’ll name 1: U-he SATIN (Tape Machine). But after opening Hans Zimmer Piano (Spitfire), SATIN does not appear as a tiny control box window above middle C; I have to go looking for it and rig it up. Well, maybe I NEED to be rigging things up! It’s not only another piano. It’s a dozen FX plugins that I own and barely know how to operate now, getting pushed to the back cuz it’s so easy to use the new ones conveniently placed in my new piano toolbox, to the point I get even rustier on the $$-ones I already have. Ok, I’ve sufficiently beaten the horse. Other side if coin: “the tiools” easily at hand and kind of worked out for me in advance is great, assuming that my main goal is to compose music efficiently with no aggravating hassles, distractions and etc. Guess I’ll play my MRS MILLS UPRIGHT for a while and think about this new military parade piano. MY CHIEF COMPLAINT, which I’ve voiced to Christian (more than a few times, whether RE Murmur, Small or VAULTS) : WHY MAKE A RESIZABLE UI (small, normal & large) where A) the increase, the Gain in each step is 2mm LARGER then the previous size & B) where size SMALL I minuscule and, well…you get the drift. WHY not just make it fully scalable ?? I cannot see the smaller markings on their UIs…to the point that I wear Hobby Modeling glasses when working with these Products. You know, the kind of glasses where one can flip up either lens and each lens has a little Flashlight molded into it. So yeah, I look like an idiot, but I SEE the UI’s detail. Maybe I should take up building tiny sailing ships, assembling them Insdie glass bottles.

I really like the instrument particularly for the ability to design project relevant voices and I think that is where its strength lies…it’s a piano for adventurers. Regarding saving presets …this of course is essential as time invested in getting that perfect sound is potentially wasted if you can’t save it or have at least certainty it will be retained between project save and load cycles. A quick review of the on line manual did not clarify whether or not it possible to save user created presets , which is quite mysterious because the design beta models must have had such a feature. I’m sure the team CH will clarify the question of preset saving.

can you save the preset by just saving the channel strip setting overall?

Enjoy the unique sounds available in this library. This is not for someone looking for a concert grand or standard piano addition.

Defiantly some unique sounds, but I agree with you! If your after a standard piano, Pianoteq 8 is one of the best ones out their (video coming soon)

As someone who's bought the last two instruments from crow hill because of videos like this I just find this hard to justify, their DRM is a bit intrusive anyway sounds great just can't justify having yet another piano vst if even for free

Really distressing to have that mic cable draped across the keys. Why?

It’s the cable to my headphones 😂 I did used to have an extension going under my keyboard but took it out for a job and haven’t had a chance to put it back yet

If I was being critical, the patches sound like you could quiet easily recreate them with multiple effects.

Tell me, what is really the interest of old tape noise ? For me, this vertical piano is not a total piano. The real piano must be horizontal, opened and there are many sampled. And why not sampling Mozart or Beethoven's instruments ? ... or older ? Why not old rolls registering systems ? There is better horizontal pianos sounds and with a less price. About price, it was first 69£, ( no euro or dollar) , after, now 129£ in april and then 169£ ! This company wanted at beginning about six months ago to OFFER much much free fine sounds, and now asks much money for his VSTs ! Sorry, I don't understand, Mr Henson, I feel betrayed, for me, it's definitely NO for your Crow Hill products !

The first goal was to archive the sound of this unique WW2 piano. It's one of a kind and not widely available and probably one of the only restored and playable ones available. The second goal was to make it a bit different to your standard sampled piano.
