THE VICTORIA CROSS | New Zealand Recipients | Episode 23 | Lance-Corporal Willie Apiata (2007)
The Victoria Cross is the highest military decoration awarded for “valour in the face of the enemy” to members of the armed forces of Commonwealth countries. It was introduced in 1856 by Queen Victoria to honour acts of valour during the Crimean War, and has continued to be awarded in all conflicts since.
In this series, we are going to take a look at each of the New Zealand recipients, we'll read the citations for each action, and where possible learn a little about each man.

Shear luck, but that in no way deminishes he bravery. In fact, that he even attempted the seamingly impossible, only highlights it.
