once on a wedding party i have seen an old man, i remember him being totally bold. It didnt seem to me strange considering his age, but than I was told he was actual veteran of Monte Cassino battle, and he went bold over single night, just because of horrors of the battle and extreme stress. War looks good only in movies, it needs to be sheer nightmare. I cant imagine what ww2 vets went through, especially those of 2 Polish Corps, seperated from their families who meanwhile were subjected to Nazi and Soviet regimes... Without any clue, if they will ever see them again. Wojtek was definitelly huge boost to morale!

You missed the REALLY sad part. When he retired to a zoo in England, It was because New polish communist government would make him into a mascot for the new political party. They didn't want that, so he ended up in England. When It was time to say goodbye, the soldiers, all orphans, outcasts and straight up badasses, cried like little girls over the bear. The one who was meant to deliver him to the zoo had it the worst. He left him in his pen. Hugging him one last time, saying his goodbyes. He left him there, telling him to stay. And the bear stood where he was. Didn't move. Just waiting for his friend to come back. Night came, then morning, Wojtek realized he's gone for good. Then he let out a roar. The soldier had clinical depression for two weeks after that. He could've come back, of course. But later he said that "The pain of reuniting with Wojtek and leaving him over and over again would be too much for both of them. It's the best for both of us." He Was the only one to never see his friend ever again.

Many of people might not know(also Polish people), but in Polish army there was also an another bear - this time the polar one. She was called Baśka Murmańska and also served in Polish army back in 1918-1919. She could march and during the defilade in 1919, she even walked on two legs and saluted to Piłsudski(as she was taught by corporal Smorgoński to do so). Unfortunately, she was killed by some peasants :(

As someone who grew up in an area with a lot of bears I can vouch that they really are the sweetest animals. In fact, outside of Grizzly and Polar bears, most bears would be herbivores if they didn't resort to eating meat when food is scarce. Their diet is 99% berries and bugs! They get a bad rep because they're territorial and will attack anything that poses a threat to their cubs. Not meant to be a pet, but they don't really pose a huge danger to you.

To be fair Polar bears hunt humans because they are starving and can’t hunt seals because there isn’t enough sea ice. Unpopular opinion is that polar bears have every right to eat us. We filled the air with CO2, and now they have nowhere to hunt. I’m not saying I want to be eaten by a polar bear, but if I were a polar bear I’d want to eat humans too. 😂

This story reminds me of the stories my grandfather in law told me from his time in the Royal Navy. He was often in the East and talked about his pet capuchin monkey Captain Blye that he bought from a market. He also told us a story of the ship’s pet budgie and how he would sit on the edge of a pint and sip the ale, falling on his back after he drank too much. Unfortunately one day he fell back on the ground and was accidentally stepped on. They gave him a proper funeral at sea, wrapping him in the Union Jack in a tiny coffin. My grandfather in law recently passed away. I miss him. RIP Grandad ❤️

The battalion commander had everyone turned out in best uniform, held a full burial service for a fallen soldier with full honours and had his brother from the local RAF base arrange for a flypast of a Spitfire! To this day, once a year, she goes to where the dog is supposed to be buried and places flowers down

There's a real footage of bear actually wrestling. What you must understand, that Wojtek found his family, and thought was one of them - a human! He also caught a German spy, no joke.

anyone going to mention Stubby the war dog who served in ww1 in 1917 and 1918 he had a adorable little jacket and then got little medals or Peter the Pigeon who also served in ww1 he served a bullet then nearly ripped his leg out after carrying a paper requesting the rescue of 1,000 men stuck far behind enemy lines...he also had a little jacket and won little medals.

Fun fact, Wojtek wasn’t the only military bear in the Polish army, he wasn’t even the first one :P During World War 1, Polish soldiers found themselves in northern Russia, where they found a polar bear and named it Baśka(which was a popular name for a girl in Poland at that time). She got back to Poland after the end of WW1(and after Poland regained independence), and even got to meet General Piłsudski, who was the most important person in the country(he played a major role in regaining independence after 123 years of being wiped out from the map). Sadly, her story is not as happy as Wojtek’s and does not have a happy ending. She was killed in 1919, after escaping her soldier comrades and going to the nearby village. People living there did not know that the bear was domesticated(sort of, not to the extent Wojtek was, she was behaving more or less like a dog) and in self defence killed her :( So, yeah… taking bears into army during world wars is just our thing 😅
