The Vergil Effect - How to Make a Good Rival

Ойындар

One of the most iconic elements in any character action game is the rival. These characters almost always manage to steal the show and leave a lasting impression on the player, but how do they pull this off? What is it about a rival that makes them so amazing? Dante could actually be arguably smarter than Vergil. We're not all too sure what Vergil does off screen. We do know he tries his strength against other devils. Nelo Angelo is an enslavement of Vergil, he was used as a device to attempt to destroy Dante, just like Trish was. Mundus wasn't expecting for Dante to recognize his brother and go easy on him, which left Vergil alive but wounded. While yes, they both do develop by testing their strength against assumed stronger foes, Dante seems to go back to his tried and true Ebony and Ivory plus Rebellion/large bastard sword, while Vergil appears to sort of absorb the extra weapons he gains. Of course DMCV changes this somewhat, but again Dante seems to already know it's his brother driving the Armageddon machine (and it looked to me that he had his suspicions about V being related to the Sparda line somehow.) His assumed stupidity could be the way he crafted himself to lure in some of the worst Devil lords (excluding DMC 3), plus his attractant as one of Sparda's son and/or being half blooded. He does sort of point out that Vergil and his own human blood is what makes them stronger than what just being a devil would have. Which is true considering the near constant world ending foes they face (constant training?). Other media also shows that Dante does have at least the same amount of cunning as Vergil, just that he's not fully used to how devils of the caliper to actually hurt him act.

Vergil is not only The Rival. What makes him great is his relation to Dante, the protagonist. The emotions behind their rivalry are natural and very easy to understand. Before all they are brothers, they share the best moments of each other's life, and in the end they do love each other. I can hardly imagine any of them would make a finishing blow to the other even if they win. They are not stupid to let go of the only thing that keeps their world spinning.

Hmmm Im not sure about that, pretty sure Vergil didn't know Dante Devil Trigger would activate from being impaled by the Rebellion. Vergil's only goal in that game was to get the power of Sparda and Dante had something he needed and once he got it he didn't care about him. Also in DMC5 it was made very clear that they intended to kill each other until Nero came along to stop them. Yes they love each other but both have duties to themselves that is more important to them, Dante wants to keep humanity safe and Vergil wants power no matter the cost, making Vergil a threat to humanity(literally cause hundreds of people to die twice) and Dante the obstacle to Vergil's plans.

Dante didnt want to kill vergil and vergil didnt want to kill dante in dmc5 but they are running out of options as vergil wants to prove his superiority once and for all while dante as you said cant let vergil keep putting all these lives in danger, its more a necessity than a desire which is where nero comes in, nero gives vergils life a purpose outside of a quest for power that is born from an inferiority complex and shows him another way and the end cutscene in the underworld shows this where they are fighting still but not with intent to kill. vergil and dante do care about eachother even love eachother although neither one would ever admit it but the subtext is there.

They care about each other and don't _want_ the other person to die, but paradoxically they would kill each other. It's heavily implied that the blow Nero stops would've killed either both or one of them, and in 3 Dante clearly says "I have to stop you. Even if that means killing you." Again, clearly Dante doesn't want to kill him as he cries later in the game (and has depression in the anime).

One thing I love about Dante and Vergil's relationship is that in DMC3, they're angry at each other in every scene, and even though Dante doesn't want to kill Vergil at the end, he's still willing to do it. It's such a serious scene that even Dante can't crack his usual smile. Then we see them reunite in DMC5, and Vergil, completely different from how he was in 3, actually gives Dante a chance to rest and recover. And when they showdown at the top of the tree, they actually are able to smile at each other, even if this fight will result in one of their death's once more. Even if the result is the same, I get the feeling they're happy to see each other, or happy to be back in something that feels familiar after everything that's happened to them.

Vergil is easily the standard by which all other rival characters are judged. Devil May Cry 3’s use of the concept is about as perfect as it gets. Each of the game’s three acts ends in a duel with Vergil. Dante loses the first encounter rather decisively, the second encounter is on more equal footing, as Dante has caught up to Vergil but ends with no clear winner, and the third encounter ends with Dante victorious after coming to terms with and fully understanding and accepting the responsibility of his lineage.

another thing about Jetstream Sam, Raiden has a mask that covers his eyes and is very angular, while Sam has a mask that covers his mouth, and has curves on it. along with that, they both have a scar on their eyes, the difference being: raiden lost his eye with the attack, while sam didnt, i personally think this has an effect of "i went through the same thing as you, but I did better." if that makes sense

To comment on Jeanne from Bayonetta, while her default costume and biker outfits are primarily red with black accents, once you get to her final fight or unlock her as a playable character, it's heavily implied that her umbran witch uniform is actually white with blue/purple accents.

It's partly because Umbral Witches weave their hair for their magic, and the "outfits" Bayonetta and Jeanne are wearing in their final encounter/playable form are woven from their hair, which is why using their Wicked Weaves and summoning abilities cause their suit to "unravel" off of them. They're literally wearing their hairdo as a bodysuit, and Bayo's hair is black while Jeanne's is white. There's also the additional overhang of hair/plumage off of their sleeves. Bayonetta's outfit has sharp, straight, angular strips hanging off of her outfit, while Jeanne has fluffier, fuller, and more soft looking plumage-like poofs coming off of her sleeves. There's something to be said about these differences too, as far as appearance tying into their personality.

The other one is more of a matter of opinion: I don’t think that Dante is an idiot, I think he’s actually incredibly smart. I think Dante is more reactionary where Vergil is more calculated. Don't you mean "responsive" rather than reactionary? Would you agree that Dante is more egalitarian, laid back and not caring about hierarchies in power and standing, whereas Virgil is all about ascending in a power hierarchy and looking down on those who refuse to. This makes me identify Virgil much more with the aristocracy of old (also see the long leather boots he wears) and Dante more with modern Rock stars generation. A duality "initiating a complex scheme" (calculating) versus "responsive to the surroundings" is probably a better opposition than "calculating versus reactionary".

From Wiki: Which pairs of colors are considered complementary depends on the color theory one uses: Modern color theory uses either the RGB additive color model or the CMY subtractive color model, and in these, the complementary pairs are red-cyan, green-magenta, and blue-yellow. In the traditional RYB color model, the complementary color pairs are red-green, yellow-purple, and blue-orange. Opponent process theory suggests that the most contrasting color pairs are red-green, and blue-yellow. So while red-green is complimentary that doesn't mean red-blue (well, "red-cyan" but cyan is just light blue anyway) is not.

@@sidlukkassen9687 So many words to just say "calculating vs reactionary." Dante's character is very much reactionary in the way he lives life a point he drives home for us in the original Devil May Cry. The only time he is proactive about his job is when it specifically involves cleaning up after his father. The punk rock/metal counter culture was a reaction to the societal attempts to quash the rock and metal genres, including the people in them. To be reactionary is to be revolutionary which is why every major story of Dante is to overthrow some self-important, power hoarding, tyrant with a Sparda-boner (Arkham, Arius, Mundas, Sanctus). If that includes his own brother, which is does, then so be it.

DMC3 was the first hack n slash where I was glued to the story. Its still the genre defining title that changed how they were made. It brought the genre into the next generations. We need another genre changer. MGS could have been that, but it was so specific in style nobody would want to copy it, and it being what it is, a substitute would not do
