The Vectorman Series | Retro Rampage

Ойындар

When everyone's eyes were on the PlayStation and Sega Saturn, the Genesis still had some life left in it, and those final years of the system gave us two really good shooting platformers with the Vectorman series! These games pushed the Genesis to the limit with impressive pre-rendered graphics, lighting effects, and relentless difficulty, but do the games still hold up after all these years? I'm gonna find out for myself!

I bought these both when they came out. Fell in love with the first one, the second felt kinda... rushed. I played the first one for countless hours. If I wasn't playing Sonic I was playing Vectorman, then I bought an N64 with my grass cutting money and it was all Zelda and Golden Eye. Sad the series never continued.

They should’ve codeveloped the second game between the Mega Drive and the Saturn with some expanded visual features for the Saturn. Then they could’ve given it proper time.

I first played Vectorman on a Toys “R” Us display/kiosk way back when. I was immediately blown away and bought the game on the spot. it’s a shame he came along as late as he did, but it still remains one of my favorites from that era. VM2 is good too, if not repetitive with the roller skating levels and a less than stellar ending.

I remember it was 23 December 2017, I was 9 years old and hellbent on finishing Vectorman 2. I stayed up all the way till midnight to get to scene 22 and won! When old games are long, they are a rewarding trip, more rewarding than modern games in my opinion. I loved these as a kid on my psp and now own the original cartridges! I always liked 2 more because of how much it changed in relation to the first, the 1st one was about robots and the 2nd was freaking mutant insects, that is awesome! Thanks for this video!

Vectorman has always been one of the best games for Genesis. You’re quite right, his life came along too late, since the 16 bit era was ending. It’s unfortunate V-man has become an afterthought series, but for those of us who knew him early on, he’s still a favorite.

I had the first Vectorman for my genesis and absolutely loved it. I would beat it over and over. The second one just seemed half hearted compared to the first, but maybe it just didn’t have the wow factor or novelty that the first one had. I remember as a kid being absolutely blown away by the graphics with the first one.

I had the impression that Vectorman was the only Orbot left. Or that Vectorman 2 was on a whole different planet. Or even that the insects had fully taken over the planet by the time it took vector man to make his round trip from the sun. It was a long time later were I got that the bug uprising was only in a relatively small location....wish they had continued these games

Hey, love the vid, went through your back catalog of retro rampage recently. Something about this series in particular is really nice. Reminds me of old school retro reviews from back in the day, but with modern quality. If you see this, what’s the box you plug all your scart cables into, and what method do you use to get scart onto a North American TV? I’m looking into getting scart for the SEGA and Nintendo consoles that support it.

  • @RampagingRex

    @RampagingRex

    2 жыл бұрын

Hey, glad you've been enjoying the videos! The scart switcher behind me is just a generic one I got off Amazon like eight years ago. You have to be careful though because a lot of those cheaper scart switchers will either degrade the quality or introduce a lot of buzzing into the audio. I run the scart cable from the switcher into a RetroTink RGB2COMP to connect to my CRT's component inputs. I have a separate switcher for the analog stereo audio. It's kind of a mess of cables but it's worth it for the picture quality alone.

Fun fact, the attack you can do with your double jump allows for some strange things to happen. There's a "Pacificist" bonus in the game that you can get by not shooting your weapon at all (at least in the second one, I didn't like the first game)... and the double jump attack does not count as an attack. So you can actually kill some bosses using just the double jump attack and then be told, after killing the boss, that you are a "Pacifist". I was very confused when I first saw this, but now it's hilarious. The double jump attack is also extremely powerful because it seems to cause damage for every single frame it's active. If you can time it right, it's much faster, but given your limited health, it's also not always advisable.

I seen this video at school earlier today and I have to say it's the best review of those games. I've beaten both games on the genesis last month and I have to say Vectorman is one of my favorite games of all time. The second one is great, but it isn't groundbreaking like the first. Also nice CRT joke (I wish I would've thought of that when I made my review of the first one):[

I love this video. It wasn't boring and you covered the games well. I wish they would make at least 1 more new game but one that players who know and love the first 2 can appreciate and love. I had played Vectorman probably well into the N64 times. Maybe even when PS2 was already out. I bought it with a sega genesis model 2 at a yard sale. Played the game quite a bit. It was hard but it was really cool. I really liked it. It still looks awesome... unfortunately I went on to sell the game and console... Baby come back. I need you. 😢

Funny enough I was thrilled that they were still making games as late as 96 with Vectorman 2. I didn't own a copy of the game but with SEGA Channel I really had no idea what was going on with the world of new consoles or whatever. I saw them in stores but they were demoing things like SEGA Rally- which blew my mind in terms of what it was doing but also, I didn't care about racing games much. No Sonic game ever hit the system that was worth a damn either so I never bothered with the Saturn till it was well dead and my friend kept telling me about Guardian Heroes. Not that I was gonna afford a Saturn or whatever till years later, my family was poor and games were rare to get. Honestly I got Sonic & Knuckles from a Blockbuster...Used for like $15. It was temperamental and didn't have the top cover but hey, it was cheap and I finally got to play the rest of Sonic 3. A lot of people even today want devs to bail on older hardware but I think it's great to see them supporting the console years later. Lot of people are on a budget- especially these days. So picking up a used last gen console and some games is a great way to play a ton of neat stuff for cheaaaaaap.

My main theory for Vectorman 2 is that either Vectorman landed in an unexplored planet instead of Earth, either he landed in a place so far from wifi that he cannot have proper communication with other orbots. I mean, for the latter one, just try to use your phone in a desert and you'll see what I'm talking about.

I always assumed it was an alien planet as a kid. Not that that explanation makes much more sense. How would he have ended up on an alien planet on a round trip to the sun? Realistically the dev team just wanted to design some bugs and do weirder environments this time around, and didn’t feel the need to explain it.

Great review and pretty thorough asides from one aspect I wonder why you never mentioned the "multiplicators" these make the game a lot easier. You can practically find an x5 Multipicator in the first level and then gain 2 extra lifes at one spot. Or farming a good multiplicator (on these mosquitos) before a life to multiplicate it. I'm at over 15 extra-lifes most of the time already after the first level and later on with enough health upgrades it becomes almost a cakewalk. I believe Vector Man is rather a game of "information" as long you know where you can find the extra-lifes, health upgrades and know how the multiplicators work it isn't really that hard.

I still love vectorman. I played it on my Genesis. I played it on my ReTRoN. If I see a collection with him in it I'm freaking buying it. It's possible to finish vectorman with about 50 lives if you know where the multipliers are. I wouldn't feel right if I didn't do that. Vectorman 2 is bonkers. Bugs everywhere crawling up the walls. It's possible to finish that game with about 90 lives if you find the multipliers.

I wish VectorMan 2 would have been made on the Sega Saturn, as it would have added to the roster of the Sega Saturn's original games (games that aren't ports of already existing games) and would have let gamers access VectorMan 2 more easily as they were, as stated in the video, already focused on the Sega Saturn

Unfortunately the Saturn simply couldn't penetrate the North American market. By the end of 1996 the Saturn had only sold 1.2M units. On the other hand the Genesis had about 18M units sold. Yes, tons of those users had moved onto Playstation, but even 20% is still 3.6M potential buyers.
