I did the same out of a truck for years. I bought a 6x12 trailer last year and it’s amazing. Im actually leaning more towards a van though. Parking sucks in small neighborhoods and city

I work out of a 7x12 trailer. I love it for jobs where I can drop the trailer off and leave it at the job site. It’s not great though if you have to take it home every day.

@@user-qc9kp3fy3k I have thought hard about the trailer route, but I hear about so many thefts, plus I don't like leaving that many $$ clogging up the customers driveway. Plus I don't like slogging through town with my other trailers.

I have a similar build out in my custom 6x12 v-nose trailer. I leave it on site most of the time and get 20 mpg, an empty bed and 5 seats the rest of the time. Pros and cons to both a van and a truck/trailer.

Metal is less weight overall, in my experience. I use a modular system by orsy Wurth. When placing those modules apart, you’ll create sturdy space too. Have the system for 15 years now, it’s in my fifth van already.

Can't thank you enough for this series, you were a huge part of my inspiration and what ended up to be a fantastic finished product. I'm a pool installer so it wasn't exactly a copy/paste scenario. I added an inverter with a power station to keep my tools charged up on the go, which really comes in handy over the course of the week. Colleagues, clients and even the competition can't help but gawk every time I swing the doors open. I'm mighty proud and pleased with the outcome! You have definitely earned a like and sub from me! just bought a transit it's important to note that how he did his verticals is he removed the plastic panel and scribed all the way to the outer sheet metal by doing so gained at least 2 inches if not mor in depth.

On the tool bag upper right corner at 19 seconds. I laughed pretty good as i recognized the glues, silicones buildup on the bag. Us true builders that work in the trades recognized that on their bags too. Sometime we have time to pick it off in a week or so. lol

I shed a layer of glue a few times of year. After it gets thick enough you can crack it and pull it off like peanut brittle. LOL

When I built out my ram promaster, I made a 1/2 plywood floor (2 pieces biscuited together). I just used regular split-tip 1 1/4” pocket screws through the rear cleats, right into the metal ribs of the van instead of messing around with 8 mm bolts and trying to line them up. also used them into the floor to connect the vertical pieces

One thing about the draws. If they are built in you can't take them to where you are working. With them as a system you can grab and drop. Sometimes simple is better than utilizing all of the space. It all depends on your work flow. Great build and use of both the kiss and lean systems.

Thanks for sharing another great van video. I made some custom packout dollies and got the ramp just like you did in your older video. I love it. Its the best setup ive ever had and loading/unloading couldnt be easier for my packout drawer stacks as well as miter/table saws on wheels. Thanks again for your efforts and have a great day!

A fantastic video with some really great ideas. I work out of a much smaller van so I just don't have the space to put things when not in use. I have been messing about with options to see what works for me. Your base system perfect, I going to try and work on that this weekend. I also believe it looks so much better when the client comes over to talk to you and your work van is organised. It just adds to the image. As I’ve learned to put your tools at different levels,heavy on the bottom, your daily use in the middle and to the entry point and secondary on top .

Looks great. I have been staying with the e series fords. I had to go with a 14 as that's the last year. I have kept refining the last three vans. Takes me about about two weeks. I bought a riv nut installer for all the attachments to the body.

Picking up a new transit this weekend, bought a Kreg Foreman online last night. Is see the benefits of this method after doing this a couple of times making cabinets then lifting them in. Great vid Spencer, thank you for sharing.

Spencer, You have done a really thorough job of thinking this threw. Of course having done it before in your other van certainly helps, but you still are improving on it as well. Nice thing about getting the basics down cold, then it's just a matter of refining the parts you weren't thrilled with. Nothing wrong with changing your mind from time to time on improving the product. I don't remember if you said if your new can had back up cameras or not. Would that be a consideration to install?? How about security cameras for the outside just in case. Do you have dedicated routers set up for repeat functions? Seems like you've pretty much thought of most everything and if not, the next can will cover that when the time comes😊😊. Nice job on your vans. I'm sure the fellow that gets to work with you will be very appreciative of such nicely set up vans and the opportunity to work with you.

Really great lay out. American Van makes an interior ladder mounting system, if you didn't already know that.

I just did the same exact thing with a 23 ram promaster.............edge banded all the 3/4 plywood and pocket hole joinery as well

I know what you mean about the sneezing from that plywood. We use this quite a bit and also sneeze when its cut. The other thing we use a lot is "spicy wood" primed 1x material, and have the same issues with that. They're horrible! Great job on the van build out.

Can we just talk about the speed and symmetry this guy displayed with the kreg table? Holy smokes guy hahaha. Great build. Tons of solid info. I aspire to have a van like this . Hopefully soon.

I have the same work vehicle and o can tell you the back is a playground for tools to fly off all shelves. I’m in the water business so we carry many different types of tools for many applications. I am interested in the template for sustainer/stack-out if you have it in printable form. It’s a game changer for sure! You should market that!

Would love to see how you store, transport your miter saw dust hood so it doesn’t get ripped, beat up. I’m not finding any solutions online. Hopefully you have one in a video I’ve not yet seen.

The fast cap version I have rolls up and comes with a carry bag that works pretty well.

I like to draws the most. I purchased a husky automotive toolbox, remove wheels and handle and mount it to the wall on top of 2 x 6s. Gives storage inside and under. Use top as a work bench. Great for when it's raining. Fin ply everywhere else

Thats an amazing set up but sadly here in the UK that van is screaming out VAN THEFT. Sadly over here it's a massive problem.

I purchased the 10’4” or 6” Bed on the Ford Transient Van then put 1” 1/8 ply for the floor & pocket holed it together! Then furred out the sides at the attachment points . I used 5/8” T & G sanded like the floor and attached it to the sides! Then from there built my dividers for my saws! I had to keep one side semi open to haul materials ! I am a finish carpenter but I am not attached to a GC now? Maybe later! So I do a lot of built ins, cabinets, doors ect,., There R so many ways to build out your van however it takes work to do it and keep clean/ organized! That’s why u see guys driving around with 25 G’s in tools piled in a heap when the doors open?

I love being organized, and you nailed it. (or screwed it, actually lol) Now, I just need a van instead of my PU truck! Well, I'll keep the truck as well, in order to carry gravel, etc.

Excellent Spencer! One comment though, the sledge (20:10) would be better off with the head on the floor...and just some simple retainer to hold the top of handle to the wall.

Here in the uk our biggest issue is keeping hold of our tools . Tool theft is at epidemic levels with no amount of security stopping them .

For the ladders you could make the same sort of blocks like you did for the levels. Maybe you already thought of that.

you might not get the depth with the packout drawers , but easier to lift the packout and take it on to the job with you.

Been looking at internal ladder racks. Adrian Steel makes a $431 option, Weather Guard has a model 250 for $332, Holman has 40480 for $424, and Jet-Rack is $111, but you buy and cut your own strut, I guess. Haven't used any but they all seem kind of expensive, except for the Jet-Rack.

You forgot to talk about where you keep the golf clubs

I made a cabinet with shelves for our laundry room from Radiata, also called Sande Ply at Home Depot. I used it because it was cheap and was going to be painted. My wife, who wants to have me around for a long time, researches every paint, stain, adhesive, and plywood I use. She discovered that Radiata is a marine grade wood and the adhesives in it are not approved in CA. In other words, they cause cancer. There is a Prop. 65 Warning On It. Do not breathe in the dust or fumes when cutting it. It should not be used inside the house because it off gases, but for a van or grarage, it is fine. In our laundry room, it is encapsulated under three coats of paint, so we feel we are OK, but there are coatings specifically designed for encapsulation. By the way, I have four small nodules in my lungs. They could have been caused by sawdust as I was not careful for years, or by photo chemicals as I was a photo teacher for over 30 years. Just be careful out there. Many craftsmen and artists use toxic materials every day. Some pay a big price later in their lives when they should be enjoying their grand kids and traveling.

Hey Spencer, great video. The irritation from cutting the plywood also happens to me with Tigerply and similar imported plywood's, especially Shelter Forest International. If you read the SDS on those they have a lot of nasty stuff in the glue.

Same here, 30 years of making saw dust and never a problem with any wood, plywood, osb...etc.. Used that stuff for a few projects a couple years ago and it just didn't agree with me.

Did you consider adding insulation to the walls and ceiling to counter winter cold?

Spencer, great videos and huge fan. Different subject, I cannot find a good strapping tape as you have referenced in your miter fold videos. Can you send me a link where to get?

I wish we had a Menards here. In NC, pre-finished maple sheets are $110/sheet right now. Maybe they are higher quality than the Radiata you mention?

You might consider checking your neighboring states for Menards. They have a ongoing sales promotion of 11% rebate on all purchases. Not sure it’s practical for you to make the trip out of state but something to think about. If your military, Lowe’s has the 10% discount. I’m in Indiana and Menards is hands down my fav big box store.

What about battery storage and charging? I’ve been looking at adding a NoCo plug to my van so I can run an extension cord and keep my van locked while charging.

You ever get any of that birch ply from indonesia? We get it sometimes from our supplier and it's really lightweight compared to other birch ply we get. Indonesia stamped on the ends. It's got a strong smell when cut though. Burns your nostrils.

Do you have problems with stuff sliding back and forth as you drive around turns? Wondering if friction padding is needed anywhere.

Who makes the bit holder you use on your m12 drill?

Try a JET Rack for your ladders.

Nice job. I tried your old van technique on mine, using shelf pins to adjust everything. I noticed on your new van you didn't use that. Just curious, did you level your shelves or angle them slightly to account for hard turns?

Some are leveled and some are angled. It depends on what I have stored on the shelf and whether I put a nosing across the front or not.

Spencer’s by far. I love Richard and his work but he really went the long way around on those box beams. So much more work than it had to be

4x8 BIRCH FROM INDONESIA WAS HALF THE WEIGHT OF REGULAR BIRCH. NOT FINISHED THOUGH.

I noticed that the cabinets you built for your old van had a bunch of holes drilled going up vertically for adjustable shelving whereas the cabinet in the new van didn't seem to have the adjustable shelving.. Did you come to a conclusion that you didn't need adjustable shelves? Thanks for the excellent content.

Pretty much. It was an extra step drilling all those holes that ultimately wasn't necessary. The holes make it nice for installation as you get things set up and then permanently fasten later. But the holes aren't necessary.

Any idea how many sheets of ply you used? I'm about to start building out a new van and was curious.

It's a lot more than you would think. I am always surprised how many it actually takes. I can't remember the exact number though. Over ten...

Is that a higher roof van? Seems you have a lot more headspace than my promaster.

Industry play such a large part in setups. My current van is a high roof medium length. I would love to have the long transit like yours!

I thought it was just me OMG that dust from the plywood is so bad used it for drawer boxes inside cabinets and just ripping them with the track saw unsupportable dust

Most of the time I buy plywood from Home Depot sometimes Lowes , reason being is they rip it long ways to reduce it's size , they make the first 2 cuts for free and I usually only need 1 or 2 cuts. Makes it easier to load and then easier to unload , also after I get it back to my work area I only have small cuts to do and I can slap a cabinet together quickly. I stopped using track saws and table saws and do everything freehand with a skillsaw circular saw and a custom cutting table I made that I lay out on the ground . I use one of those 4 foot T squares and a sharpee marker and I aim my saw blade to remove the sharpee mark. After a few times you get good at making straight cuts with out the track saw , I do this to have less tools taking up my space.and to be reliant on less tools. At my shop I cut everything outdoors on the outside of my overhead door that way I don't need a dust collection system the wind blows it away and I pick up the big pieces. Thanks for all the tips you provided I especially liked your pocket hole system I definitely will pick one of those up. Good luck Edit , I was thinking that you could add a beem in-between the top of the driver's side and passenger side shelf's , one by the cab area and a different one by the rear doors , would be a easy way to add strength and keep your cabinets from pulling away from the walls , just a thought , good luck

I was at my local Menards and I couldn’t find the plywood you were referring to in my store, when I asked one of the workers about it, he said he’s never heard of it. Did you have to order the Radiata plywood? I’ve found it online at other stores but not menards.

No it was in stock. If they have a standard prefinished birch or maple ply I would go with that.
