Welcome to the Swordmastery Channel!
I am Maître Linda Wyatt.
My Fencing Master, Maître Adam Adrian Crown, has 40+ years’ experience as a Fencing Master, and is also a 5th Degree Black Belt (Godan) in Chinese Goju Karate.
This channel shares our dedication to fencing as a martial art, or, if you will, martial arts, from the viewpoint of the sword.
The videos cover everything from specific technique, to philosophical discussions, to our teaching methods, and much of it applies to far more than fencing.
We don’t study the sword and nothing else.
We study the sword and EVERYTHING else.
We look for connections between seemingly unrelated things to discover universal principles that apply to all things.
If you’re interested in what a pair of classically trained Fencing Masters have to share about fencing, the sword, training, martial arts, combat theory, teaching, or how things are all connected, this is the place for you.

In the second etude, I see most of the basics you need, stepping, lunging thrusting, parrying, engaging, disengaging, so what's not to like? Fencing books have plenty of synoptic tables, the farther back in time you go, the more forms you find, books of the 1500 are basically based on forms.

This puts me in mind of Taylor's 10 lessons, and solo form, from Roworth's 2nd edition of 1804. Working through the 10 lessons develops the full system. In doing them solo I practice one side of the exercise then switch to become the opponent. Hadn't, however, thought of putting them to music. I suppose one could use pieces of increasing tempo to to eventually get to full speed. Gilbert and Sullivan's "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General" has about the right spirit and tempo. Of course one would have to wear the appropriate hat to pull it off. 💂

Thanks for your comment. Yes the hat is the very thing! ;) Seriously, though, thanks for your comment. I’m sure we’re not the first ones in human history to come up with this approach. It seems, to me, an obvious thing to do. In re: Using music, rather than increasing the tempo, we generally sub-divide the beat into smaller and smaller parts. Timing and rhythm being far more important than speed. Thanks again. -AAC

4.- Would love the different names, explained, of the guards, they are different in Italian, saber, etc. Also there is a fellow called Hope with his "New Method" that is older than Angelo's system. Also is interesting that you can practice ALL techniques with kata. Cheers

1.- Very 👍 good! The comparison is fantastic, a kata as an exercise to develop diverse skills is very good. Also the comparison to music is brilliant. Cheers

2.- Kata could be also a "form" that is a device to memorize the techniques of a system, specially in ancient times with no books, photos, film, or KZread. So it can be an "aide-mémoire" (a help for the fallible human memory) a very important function. I believe that Tai Chi, was used in this way, and privately the techniques were practiced individually, like a "bunkai" Cheers

3.- Again a criticism, you have a lot to offer, yet you are not giving your best in these videos, why don't you do a couple of videos showing your "tunes"? Explaining and showing the "tunes" in more detail? That would be very important. Different angles, repetitions, explanation of its uses, etc. Wisdom is ok, empirical use of said wisdom would be welcomed. Cheers

Thanks for your comment. On the contrary, we ALWAYS give our best. ALWAYS. But we don’t always give away everything we know for free. Please keep in mind, this is our PROFESSION, not our hobby. May I assume in your line of work, you like to be paid for your efforts? 😀 But you do make a good suggestion. (Great minds think alike.) We’re planning to do more on this topic. More videos. Perhaps a study guide. But doing it right is a big project. It will take some time. Do let us know if you have particular questions you’d like us to address. Thanks again for you comments! -AAC
