Great Life Advice From An Old Boxer

Спорт

The best advice I ever got was from an old boxer- but it wasn’t really just about boxing, or even just about fighting.
Two stories that have made a big difference.
Have a listen, and consider if you have any similar stories from your life, where someone has brought something to your attention that has stayed with you.

Welcome to the Swordmastery Channel!
I am Maître Linda Wyatt.
My Fencing Master, Maître Adam Adrian Crown, has 40+ years’ experience as a Fencing Master, and is also a 5th Degree Black Belt (Godan) in Chinese Goju Karate.
This channel shares our dedication to fencing as a martial art, or, if you will, martial arts, from the viewpoint of the sword.
The videos cover everything from specific technique, to philosophical discussions, to our teaching methods, and much of it applies to far more than fencing.
We don’t study the sword and nothing else.
We study the sword and EVERYTHING else.
We look for connections between seemingly unrelated things to discover universal principles that apply to all things.
If you’re interested in what a pair of classically trained Fencing Masters have to share about fencing, the sword, training, martial arts, combat theory, teaching, or how things are all connected, this is the place for you.

Maître Adam, Thank you for another compilation of cogent thoughts. I am enjoying your “leçons” martial teachings and wish to add a perspective of my own. I was in a fencing class this morning and learned several techniques of the saber, including attack when there’s an opening, wait for one to appear or make one in your opponent’s defense. This is similar to your thoughts on focusing on what you will do to your opponent, not what he wants to do to you! I studied boxing for a couple of years in a junior college in Oakland, CA. An important lesson I learned from this time with Coach Gallagher was to train hard and make yourself hard. The first day, first thing he told us to run around the school, no small thing. I threw away my pack of cigarettes right after class. At the end of the first day we went toe-to-toe and punched each other in the stomach until he said stop. The lesson: get tough, stay hard. This applies to fencers, too!

This works two ways- Not only do thoughts shape actions, but actions also shape thoughts. This is the true essence of discipline in training. Loved the video. I think you’d absolutely love two more books that deal with mastery of the mind- Personality isn’t Permanent- by Benjamin Hardy & The Expectation Effect by David Robson Cheers from New Orleans! 👊

I recently told my good friend that Hundred Eyes from the show Marco Polo is both my favorite character in all of cinema and literature, but also my ideal. If we are all play-actors of our ideal, ala Nietzsche, why not pick the best--those that moved us the most. There is this old archetypal division of the conqueror (Alexander) v.s the priest, and I must admit I'm more of a priest, but I'm a priest who don't take shit (ala Hundred Eyes). It is better to be a warrior in a garden, than a gardener in a war, etc. Anyway, I just needed to rant, and your essay here was stimulating...thx man

My friend, for younger folks in this crazy milieu, it's not the "focused mind" that is the problem but the "full heart", the "purpose". The clearer the mind becomes without the context, the orientation that the heart provides, absent purpose, the more it goes astray. Martial arts, I'm sure you agree, can bring people back into contact with their "hearts". A balance of head and heart is like the core of most philosophies imo...but these poor bastards growing up now, what do they know of "heart"?

9:18 "thats in the bible some place.". Exactly..i was AMAZED at whats in there once i started listening to the bible on audio DIRECTLY, for MYSELF (i want to say reading, but that wouldnt be the truth. Pride is a struggle). Anyway, still learning but i would enocurage anyone seeking best guidance and the ANTIDOTE to madness in the world today, starting in each ourr own hearts.
