In reality only a handful of artists are extremely expensive, the rest of us just struggling. It depends on how high you manage to climb on the “Art Ladder”. Depending on who you know and who supports you, not financially, buy the art critics, curators and gallerists.

You are spot on. The bulk of artists struggles, several are earning a decent living, and the happy few earn a lot. But the big collectors and galleries earn a multiple of the artists. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing in my opinion. What is good for the gallery/collector is most often good for the artist, a mutually beneficial arrangement supporting the artist to think about the art, and the industry to make sure the market remains vibrant, lively, and lucrative.

Most people who think they're artists, are not. I see vast majority as hobbyists or crafters, including those that went into art schools or even art teachers. Those still extremely rarely qualify as fine artists. Art market is constantly being diluted with these "Etsy"-type low level garbage stuff, barely selling for the price of the materials (if sold at all). Yes, you gotta be a highly skilled and unique fine artist, plus excellent sales person, to convey both the vision and the value. Also, you better network to know someone in rich circles or amongst gallery owners, otherwise nobody will even consider you. Very difficult to break through, but most artists will never sell a single piece.

The thing about art is, you just know it when you see it... if you have to explain to someone why something is art, then either it's not art, or that person will never understand.. Stand in front of a Van Gogh with the proper lighting and tell me that you're not moved.... I once stood in front of the 12 Sunflowers painting hanging in the museum in Philadelphia and stared for so long that I felt like I was having a dream while fully awake.... and the colors under the perfect lighting just hypnotized me.

@@contemporaryartissue Hi, Good morning If I may, there is something that I would like to ask you, if possible, as an artist. To give you an introduction, Balthus, the French painter, he never conceded interviews. Finally, one day, he concedes one at the time he finished one of his a bit controversial paintings. The interviewer comes, sees the painting, but starts asking Balthus about his personal prestige and being the head of the Art Institute in Paris I think L'ecolle des Beaus Arts (sorry, I'm not sure). Balthus stops him and asks him: "Is the painter or is the painting?" ... And the interviewer had to change the course of the interview. When I read this, it stroke me. I am on this quest of pursuing to know more profoundly about "THE QUALITY OF A PAINTING" that Balthus was referring to when he stopped the interviewer ... I am 63 y/o , have an Associate degree in Fine Arts , trying to attempt to present my work to the art world as a German Expressionist with Neo-Existentialist intention. My petition to you is, if possible, if you could expand on " THE QUALITY " of a Contemporary Art painting . Whenever you can, but let me know if you do it, When you will do it . THANK YOU VERY MUCH !

When selling in the secondary market, do you keep in mind the royalties for the artist and how does that work because I have a feeling that Sabam is not paying the royalties themselves to artists. Also, love your videos because they are highly educational.

  • @contemporaryartissue

Thank you for tuning in, the kind words, and a great question. On the secondary market, the artist earns no royalties or commissions at all. It happens frequently the collector earns a lot more than the artist or gallery did with the first sale. That's why galleries who represent blue chip artists are careful with to whom they sell the works.

Good video. However, there is apparently a darker side to some of the eyewatering prices on the secondary market. Art can be used as a portable and secretive way to move money as long as authenticity is guaranteed by, for instance, major auction houses.

Contemporary just means current. From NOW. If it's retro, vintage or historic somehow, that means it doesn't reflect current times, it's from the past. A decade old stuffy art pieces don't qualify, obviously. Paint, draw or photograph what is CURRENT.
