The Ute That Never Was! Building a Truck From a Car in 4 Days! DIY Body and Paint!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I picked up this 1972 Mercury Marquis from a guy who bought it off of Derek from @ViceGripGarage. I wasn't really sure what to do with it until it dawned on me that the car would actually make a great truck! So, we build the Mercury version of the Ranchero!

Finally someone using these cars for something useful. I used to buy these cars in the 90s for 200 bucks a pop for donors for my off road habit.

I used one of the purple hobo freight guns on my high school era mud truck. I completely disassembled it, and cleaned it with mineral spirits before use. After that I mixed my $40 gallon of rustoleum with mineral spirits 2 to 1 plus a hint of hardener. Was my first paint job, and didn’t have a single run on top of laying out like glass with zero orange peel, besides a thin spot I had on the tailgate where my cup ran out.

I had a good chuckle at the Australianism.. it's not every day that an American calls something a 'Ute" and for the sheer budget build of this, and the 4 days it took, I'm suitably impressed.. but damn, wouldn't be able to drive that on the road here. Oh, loved your dad's "It's just spot putty" comment, my brain immediately said "Bloody big spot there mate". :-)

I was kinda,in love with the '72 Merc Grand Marquis or the Grand Narc car but I'll tell you what Dalton if you put a truck floor with an operating tailgate so that I could slide sheets of drywall in it to drive home and if you want the 460 for your Toriino that's fine drop a 390 in it and ill take it so those 3 fixes flat floor with beads flowing to tailgate that operates including water flow out the back so I can spray it out and operating tailgate and I'll take it if not that's OK too you have a great mind to use it instead of letting it sit and rust into the ground!! Oh and you should call it McCommanchero lol Commanchero is a real name !! Mc is for the paint scheme if you had added a touch more orange you would have had Ford racing yellow lol You have inspired me to try Harbor freight guns with this one on my own Hot Rod !!

Back in the day, many people converted their Model T's or, what have you, into pickups, right at home, just as you have. And this is what makes the Mercury McMullet a Very Turditional ride. We're also awarding bonus points here for absolutely nailing the whole Carolina Squat thing. Great job! Easily an 11 out of 10 on the PBG customs and conversions scale. 👍
