800 Miles in DEATHTRAP Ford Station Wagon! Will It Drive to the Beach?
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Its time to try and drive this 1960 Ford Country Sedan station wagon to the ocean so that Jess can see the beach for the first time ever. Will it make it? Will we even survive? This was truly a vacation from hell. One thing that made it better was getting to visit @OutontheRanchwithDrLee-xb4lo - to say I owe that man a great deal would be an understatement.

@@PoleBarnGarage I'm not a pretentious Jackass. I'm a motor mechanic and former garage owner who suffers watching you needless wreck cars. For example, you could have simply Googled: 'how do I fix vacuum wipers?', or you could have purchased the suspension bushes you needed before you left. Or, if you couldn't find the correct bushes, the companies that make the bushes usually allow you to browse by size, which would probably have worked. I get that breakdowns, etc, are part of the fun, but there are enough real catastrophes that you can't avoid, without needlessly creating problems for yourself. In every relationship, you get back what you put in. If you treated your wife the way you treat your cars, you would soon be sleeping alone.

Pull the hose off of the vacuum wiper motor source, stick it into a container of ATF and work the wiper arms back and forth a few times or ten. Draws ATF into the vacuum motor and softens up the old grease...let it sit overnight, hook it back up and your wipers will work good-ish again!

Nicely edited episode! It was pretty good.
Some years before Dad gave it to me, the '59 "Squarebird" was our family car. It had those Gawd-awful vacuum wipers too. We climbed Pike's Peak in that thing, in the days when the roads were barely a lane wide, and had nothing or only pathetic protection from the cliffs off the side of the road. They always seemed to be on the passenger side, where Mom was pissing herself in terror. The more the 352 motor struggled lugging up the hill, the more ridiculously sluggish the wipers were, and the harder it rained. How Dad got that thing up there and back without us all dying is a testament to the Man he was.
Mrs Pole Barn seems like an absolute GEM. 😅 Good for you guys, making awesome memories together and great content for the rest of us👏🏻
Pretty sure families on new SUVs going to the beach passed you and thought "... oh that poor family... they must be having a horrible time...". I did that 2 years ago with a $1,000 Buick Rendezvous, tossed a head and head gaskets at the 3.4, changed the fluids and took off on a 3,000 mile road trip to Colorado, discovered it runs hot climbing passes, the 4 year old tires tossed all the cords, and it wasn’t a fun trip in an 80,000 mile car. My 77 Chevelle on the otherhand is a veteran long distance road tripper. (Cept now, it dropped a valve and destroyed the engine on the way to a baseball game.

Those vacuum wipers gave me flashbacks of my first car, a 1968 AMC Javelin. I bought it in 1985 for $300 from my brother. The faster you drove, the slower the wipers went. That's not good when you're from Seattle. It had an auxiliary vacuum pump on top of the fuel pump, but the diaphragm was apparently blown.

The whole time, I was laughing and laughing because a lot of the issues could've been avoided. As a 30+ years mechanic, I was shocked at the ill preparation in making sure that it could make the trip successfully. You are one brave person on taking these chances of ill prepping a road trip. I miss those days. Hang onto that attitude as long as possible, you two crazy kids!
I had a similar trip from St Louis to Houston in a 1979 Corolla Wagon 2TC that was running hot. Stopped at Springfield and went to the movies to wait til sundown. Saw Oscar with Stallone. Had pulled the thermostat cover at an O Reillys and found there was not one. So after dark in the cool air we drove all through the night at 55 with the heat on full blast. had to put a blanket over my feet to keep from burning them. She ran right at the red the whole way, Made it home around 9am. Never had a leak but the next day went to pull the Rad and it came apart in my hands. Heater core as a supplemental Rad works well. Nice job
Looks like an “exciting “ trip Dalton and Jess! It’s cool that you’ve stayed in touch with Matt’s dad Lee as well.
Hey Dalton if you want those vacuum wipers to work better. Get you a big Mato juice can like most older fords have under the hood and use it a vacuum canister it will hold more vacuum and the wipers will run faster it works pretty good.
I get the frustrations and the panic, but this is what i call an adventure. Driving a car that doesn't have a very long life and you know the risks, but there's thats adrenaline excitement.
Two steps to stop window fogging, 1) spray and wipe inside of all windows with anti fog spray from auto parts store and spray and wipe exterior windshield, front side windows, and rear window with anti fog rain x ( at least 2 coats ) then 2) get a powerful 12 volt cigarette plug tornadoe fan from a truck stop and set it to blow on inside of windshield and you should have anymore fogging issues. Repeat every 2 or 3 days with the sprays.

Was so excited for this series glad you guys are having a great vacation despite the early woes! Be safe Jess and Dalton!
Really enjoyed the video Dalton. Regardless of all the problems, there's still no better way to take a trip than in an old car.
When I was a kid, we had an old 1959 Chevy Apache 32 pickup truck with vacuum wipers. When you coasted, they'd go so fast I was sure the blades would just fly off. When the engine was under load, they'd stop. You had to let off the throttle for a second to let the wipers sweep, then get back on the gas before you lost too much speed (the truck had a 235 L6 with a three on the tree, so losing momentum was borderline tragic).
13:49 "if you bring it, you won't need it" a.k.a. plan for the worst, hope for the best!

I was so glad to see you gut the thermostat and not just remove it most people don't understand you need some back pressure so coolant can slow down enough to pull heat out of block but to also get in the heads far enough to keep from having hot spots where the coolant will never reach without some back pressure, as long as you do the wrong thing the right way it's all good. The heart of the problem is the RPM.....3,300 RPM is still way to high to keep that engine temp in the safe zone. The gearing needs to bring it closer to 2,000 RPM on the highway and the overheating issue would disappear.

There's no such thing as "letting the coolant flow too fast through the radiator so it has enough time to exchange the heat with the air passing through." Higher flowrates = higher heat transfer. That's an old man's tale similar to the "A car battery discharging on concrete." Though the latter may have been true back in the really old days when batteries were made of glass, rubber and wood. However, some heater cores do not like the full 16psi and do benefit from having a restrictor. Both of our daily drivers have restrictors on the cores from the factory. Let that coolant run free like the wild horses.
@IDrinkMW
22 күн бұрын
That’s true up to a point, while technically you may be right I’ve run into issues where I had to put in a thermostat in something without one that was overheating and it made it run cooler, if it runs fine without a thermostat that tells me there is a lot of debris in the cooling system and that tells me that wether you run a thermostat or not you are gonna have issues so it’s only a temporary fix at best unless you don’t give a shit
Great video! Reminds me of stories my grandfather used to tell me about his road trips from Canada down into the states in the 50’s and 60’s Cars of that vintage only went so far before they needed repairs of some sort and he drove used cars back then so he always planned extra time and money into his road trips for repair stops. He also drove with a bottle of whiskey beside him back then… in case he got sleepy driving he would take a snort to wake him up.
