ABANDONED 21 Years-Will This Corvette Run and Drive? CHEAP Vette Kart

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I picked up this 1989 Corvette for $500 from a car lot, its completely trashed, but a great candidate for a vette kart! We swap the fuel injection out for a good old fashioned carburetor and have tons of fun.

I'm not finished watching yet, but my PC is having a fit, and I am writing this while I have the chance. Not unlike the suspected bad solenoid on your transmission, things are currently working in a fashion, but I do not know how long it will last. Finished watching, and boy did I laugh at the antics and panic while out on your adventure. I would love to be able to get up to the things that you guys do. Living the dream! I'm looking forward to seeing what you get up to next. All the best, Neil :-)

    I'm a former GM driveability tech, and I worked on a bunch of these 5.7L tuned port engines. GM stuck them in the Vette, firebird, Camaro, and the Chevy Caprice that had the police package. I approve you switching to carburetor and hei ignition, parts for this engine was ridiculous. Injectors would short internally due to no regulation on ethanol concentration, and had Bosch injectors that were $200+ a piece. The mass airflow sensor was Bosch and a common fail item as it used a heated wire in the airflow that was cooled and varied resistance to figure airflow, those were $600+. Not a cheap engine for the time. The next generation of these were even worse, using the optispark ignition with the distributor behind the water pump and driven by the camshaft. Made replacing the cap and rotor a real fun time. We always recommended replacing the water pump as we had to remove it anyway to service the distributor.

    This is the kind of stuff the big guys lose touch of. I can't speak for everyone but the "budget" builds car youtubers put out anymore where they drop an efi in it or the never ending ls swaps with teams of pro's gets stale for a younger backyard wrencher. It's awesome to see guys still putting out real stuff and sharing that with your son is priceless time spent together. It's so refreshing to see someone say lets jest tear all this junk off and roll down some gravel roads and see what happens. Thanks Dalton (and JD) for breathing life into this kinda content again

    It's pretty sad isn't it? I've been doing this shit my whole life, I'd buy these 3 cars for $500 a piece whether I was doing KZread or not, just to screw around with them. Having fun is what the hobby is about, not spending millions of dollars!

    Loving the videos lately dalton although it was kinda sad seeing the c4 ripped apart. I mean even all of the lights worked in the interior and exterior. And also some people could have used the hood or some of the body panels.

  • @PoleBarnGarage

    @PoleBarnGarage

    As someone who does bodywork, the panels were repairable but far from good shape. And there just aren't a lot of people fixing c4s, when nice ones can be had for under 5 grand

    I dont know why, but "Store brand! Mmmmm!" Is what broke me. Somehow that was the funniest part of it for me. Second funniest was you realizing almost too late that throwing your body into the hood wouldn't end well if it broke free. I think I'd have kept the doors on but gutted them so they're just skins, put the headlights back on, and 5 speed swap it. Perfection. Maybe some header mufflers too..

    24:34 I like the Boltster things, Kevin has shown them off a couple times and Rainman Ray has used them in his videos too. But I'm WAY too cheap and perfectly happy stabbing my bolts and pushrods and such through a Dr Pepper 12 pack box and labeling them with whatever Sharpie I can "borrow" from my kids' backpacks.

    I thing the thing at 43:35 is a go cart external starter. You would plug it in and stick the end on the crank and use it to spin the motor over.

    I'm pretty sure that I bought an old car that you worked on a few years back... I could tell because instead of just taking the time to remove the power window motors the right way on both front doors, there were access holes hacked through the sheet metal-- with no attempt made to replace the missing metal! On a lighter note, J.D. is a perfect partner-in-crime.

    Personally love the C4. I have taken my 84 from stock to 7 second 1/4 mile car over the years. Make great race cars - And they are cheap. They look good. They handle excellently if you're into turning corners, are pretty lightweight and can be made super lightweight easily..... If you're into drag racing they are a great platform to build from as well..... TPI is indeed garbage today, performance wise and working on it wise but was cool back in the 80s... not to worry as old SBC retrofits easily and so does LSX engines. There's alot of room under the hood once you strip away the BS.....
