The US Mach 5 Projectile that Guarantees Unmatched Destruction and Precision

Ғылым және технология

In a secluded laboratory, a cadre of America's most brilliant engineers and military strategists converged to give life to an unprecedented marvel of modern warfare: the Boeing X-51 Waverider. This was no ordinary military endeavor.
The challenge of generating thrust with a supersonic combustion ramjet, commonly known as a scramjet, is akin to lighting a match in the eye of a hurricane and maintaining its flame. First pioneered by NASA in 1991, the X-51’s scramjet engine defies conventional wisdom, harnessing fuel and an oxidizer to unleash an extraordinary burst of power while soaring at hypersonic speeds.
Achieving Mach 5-five times the speed of sound-promises to redefine the very concept of combat distance. It hints at a future where missiles possess the capability to traverse continents in mere minutes.
The stakes for the Waverider project were nothing short of astronomical, and the risks were immense - as only four prototypes were ever brought into existence. The final tests could make or break the future of US aerial power…

There’s a reason why Russia’s defense companies got no sales at the Dubai Air Show Exhibition, and that’s because we’ve all seen in Ukraine that they don’t work like Russia has promised. On the other hand, US defense company raked in billions in sales.

Patriot missiles have intercepted Russia’s Kinzhal missile six times. US Javelins have repeatedly taken out Russian tanks. The Bradley Fighting Vehicle is not only slaughtering Russian troops, but its kept Ukrainian troops alive when its been attacked. The US has provided Ukraine with less than two percent of its military budget, and yet look at how much of the Russian military has been annihilated by it. On the other hand, what has Russia’s military done that is impressive? The only thing Russia has shown is that it can send scores of soldiers to their needless deaths.

Scramjet based “cruise missiles” will need to fly at extremely high altitudes to achieve hypersonic speed. Once they transition to ground attack, they will not be able to maintain hypersonic speed. Maneuverability at hypersonic speed entails large sweeping turns, not small, sharp movements.

There is no missile that kinks anc dodges anti-missiles. They don't have rrfebsive sensors so can't ser an incoming missile to avoid it. Itbisvtruevthat the velocity will slow in thicker air, but the momentum takes a while to reduce. By tipping up then straight down, the time in thick air is reduced, and they can still arrive at a terminal Mach 3. Your criticisms just don't apply to anything except worm missiles from anime. Real missiles reduce the risk by shortening thevdistance by flying straight and fast, by not being burdened by the weight of thevwystems you think exist.

Please read other people’s comments more carefully. And no need trying to be clever when insulting them. It tends to make you look bad.

The US used a hypersonic missile to achieve history's first and only air-to-air kill on a satellite back in the 1980s. This achievement helped the US realize hypersonic missiles aren't really all they are cracked up to be, and have been focused on developing DESSL ever since. DESSL's engage targets at light speed, and do not require the complicated guidance and lead calculation systems as missiles. They can be deployed from a greater spectrum of platforms as well. Aerial platforms can potentially engage targets in both offensive and defense scenarios at greater stand off distances that aerial platforms carrying missiles of any kind. Also, DESSL's do not have to calculate vectors and lead fast moving targets such as hypersonic missiles to the extent a conventional propelled air defense artillery system does. A DESSL must only located the incoming threat and then point directly at it. Another huge advantage of DESSLs is that they are multi use. Whereas a missile can only be used once, DESSLs can be used thousands of times, if maintained correctly and can be produced at a much larger scale. One DESSL can be used to engage multiple hypersonic missiles, whereas it would require several hypersonic missiles to engage a single DESSL. DESSLs are literally the fastest kinetic weapon system in the known universe since NOTHING in the known universe moves faster than light. Several of these systems are already being installed on US naval warships, aircraft, and ground vehicles, with massive developmental research and performance enhancements in the near future. Hypersonic missile technology was more of backup plan for the US, not the priority considering virtually all missile technology will immediately be made obsolete in the face of large scale DESSL platform integration.

For all the cool advantages the Directed Energy Weapons have, distance, scattering, water vapor, weather, are all their enemies. Also the amount of time on target in order to burn through the airfame is critical unless multi-megawatt power levels are achieved. The ocean is the most difficult environment for any weapon system, and lasers have the same or worse difficulties than mechanical systems. Maybe Tesla's idea of sending tiny kinetic particles at a distance has some merit, but unfortunately the huge surface area to volume ratio of tiny particles would make them decelerate very fast. Tesla was clever, but he often overlooked very practical problems with his paper designs. The discipline of having to make something work in the real world is much more difficult than creating them in your mind.

With 4 minutes of fuel, the farthest this will fly is 452 km (281 mi) range. Meaning you have to have them deployed in the area before hand. So, it has serious limitations. It's only slightly faster than an AAM.

  • @bud4792

    @bud4792

4 minutes of fuel isn't the max capacity. For tests, you don't want to run the possibility that you lose connection with the missile and then have it fly for another 2000km with no way to abort. With limited fuel, if something goes wrong, it just crashes in the ocean.

Seems to me like Scramjets are a real waste. They are more finicky, expensive, and overkill for long range weapons. Why not just settle for SLIGHTLY lower (mach 4-5) speeds and rely on Ramjet technology from the 1950s. The Meteor missile shows that Ramjets work well and have the range advantages of using air as the oxidizer for propulsion. Also, now we can use a solid fuel for Ramjets, making them easier to store. Personally, I think everyone just wants the latest and greatest, sexiest technology to implement the scramjet for the Generals, Congress, and the public, because "THEY" have it. Or maybe the Pentagon is just using it as an excuse to fund scramjets for their real, ideal purpose as a booster stage for a space vehicle. It might even be economical for a multi-mode single-stage-to-orbit vehicle. Turbojet-to-Ramjet-to-Scramjet-to-full-Rocket spaceplane would be really cool.

But not if you make a hypersonic aircraft that's reuseable. Scramjets are amazing because you are literally using fast moving air to generate thrust to go faster.

The simple truth is that on the strategic level the actual targets for any US hypersonic missile are relatively limited ( mostly strategic nuclear tipped ballistic missiles). The whole development programs initiated by the CCP and Russia are a direct counter to US supercarriers,a strategic threat that neither country's Navy poses.I'm not denigrating the waverider as a technological achievement I'm noting that there are far fewer targets posing the level of threat that the US Navy poses to America's enemies.

  • @cubed0724

This is why the US wasn't investing highly in hypersonic missiles, it wasn't for lack of knowledge, technology, and certainly not funding. It was that the cost of a hypersonic missile is 100 million dollars. So, the US instead developed hypersonic aircraft which we have operational right now, it's called the "Darkstar SR 72." Building a reuseable hypersonic aircraft that can carry massive number of payloads and nukes it far more effective, deadly, and scarier than a single hypersonic missile which the US has shown is easily intercepted with the war in Ukraine. Plus, China's hypersonic missiles can't hit their target and miss them by 20 miles, the Carriers have nothing to worry about.

The US has built hypersonic missiles going back to the 1950s. Look up the US Skybolt that flew over Mach 12 in the 50s. Russia claims to have hypersonic missiles, but the Kinzhal was shown to be nothing more than a typical ballistic missile with a trajectory that can be calculated for interception. If it was truly hypersonic it would also be maneuverable, but it’s not. Russia claims to also have the Zircon, which is a copy of the US x-51 Waverider, but to date still has never shown it to actually work.
