This guy has to be kidding about inequality falling over the last 20 years. In the real world, inequality has never been so pronounced and it is best measured through the disparities in wealth based on multi-decade asset price inflation over the last two decades. A report earlier this year from the US explained that for a ONE MONTH period, the wealthiest 25,000 Americans increased their wealth by an average of $10 million while the average wealth increase for the BOTTOM 50% of Americans was $200. That sounds like rampant inequality to me. On any objective measure, eg, Picketty’s Capital in the 21st Century, we’ve also seen a major multi-decade decline in the share of income going to labour and an equal increase in the share going to the owners of capital. One question: If equality is on the rise where did Trump come from? Populism is on the rise globally.

@@resolecca the same thing is happening where we live. Housing and rental affordability is at crisis levels. Those who got into housing have over indebted themselves and spend an enormous percentage of their income paying the bank. This results in Foodbanks, providing charitable food handouts, quadrupling and being totally overwhelmed by the demand from people who have never needed help. So now we have the poor and middle class working hard to support the wealth portfolios of the rich who have investment properties and huge share portfolios with stocks like banks that are making massive profits from the interest being paid on inflated housing.

6:24 by the time the Presidential debates rolled around in 1996, it finally became obvious that the economy was actually booming, so much so that the Dole/GOP strategy largely was to argue that the economy was not growing enough. In about 12-13 months from now, we will see if this strategy repeats, should the economy improve at the current rate. Great video, gentleman. As a long-time US political student and academic (I studied under the legendary Dr. Ray Nichols at Monash before moving to UCSD to complete my “Political Science” studies in early 1991), I always enjoy the outside perspective you provide. The disconnect between the government numbers, and the popular sentiment is easy to understand. Everything costs more. Covid money has been all spent. Salary increases for primary wage earners are not keeping up. You can stand at a podium and tout this number, or that number, but the only number that matter your bank account at the end of the day. And if that number is shrinking, then yeah, you will say that the economy is BAD.

To look at levels of inequality all you have to do is look at the level of the measures those with wealth feel they have to go to protect their property from society at large. First it was locks on doors and windows, then it was deadlocks, security screens and alarms, then it was tall fences and gates, now its gated communities with security cameras and patrols. Their level of fear of the society they are creating tells the story.

When the word economy started being used, the activity and behavior for the innovation, production and exchange of goods and services was also included in the definition. The stories that economists started telling may have been a little bit more realistic than the stories religions were telling but, the imagination of these story tellers got the better of them and too much of their ideas where based on magical type thinking and they were not always honest with themselves or to others. The stories were always fascinating and we can always learn things from good stories regardless if they are true or not but there are limits to progress if the story tellers continue with the fabrications and the myths and magical thinking and are not able to transition into truth, reality, honesty, accuracy, reason, rationality, critical and evidence based thinking. Religions are master story tellers and to compete for wealth, status and power have literally convinced people that there are magical authorities that live in the sky. Economist can keep beating the same drum and keep telling the same stories or they can start making the effort to educate people that the best ways to continue to exist on this planet is to stop believing in non-sense and start to be much more truthful and honest with each other and start to understand that the wellbeing and happiness of others is the basis for morality. The idea and thinking that the economy always has to grow for there to be innovation, progress and prosperity may have worked well when communities and societies did not know the scale of the planet and their environment seemed limitless. For quite some time now, we know that we live on a finite planet with limited resources and the focus now needs to shift to sustainability not on growth! Presently if the economy is not growing, it is still considered a failure. This type of thinking cannot go on uninterrupted on a finite planet with finite resources. There needs to be flexibility in the system for the economy to expand and contract and for a contraction to be considered normal and not a problem or a failure. The contraction needs to be just as prosperous and productive as the expansion. For this type of thinking to work, there needs to be some new economic stories told based on economic sustainability not on economic growth. I am sure there will be some Nobel prizes awarded to the academics, economists, corporate board members, bank executives and business leaders, entrepreneurs and of course politicians and government officials along with our smartest and brightest among us that can start telling the story of how a sustainable economy can work. A good starting point would be to begin with the understanding that the wellbeing and happiness of others benefits everyone and is the basis for morality. If people are struggling to survive, they will not care about anybody else nor about the devastation of the planet. The responsibility is with our wealthiest and smartest and brightest among us. I am the first to admit that humans may not be able to achieve this type of progress but we have to start talking about it and start presenting these ideas. Committing crimes and making up stories about magical authorities with supernatural powers that live in the sky is not helpful. I do not agree with all the ideas in these books but “Doughnut Economics” by Kate Raworth, “Prosperity without Growth” by Tim Jackson, and “Confessions of an Economic Hit Man” by John Perkins and organizations like “The Centre for Advancements of the Steady State Economy” and podcasts from the “Growth Busters” website and the “Conversation Earth” website are promising developments.
