Glad to have found your videos, our community college instructor pointed us in your direction. As a beginner, I have made ALL of these mistakes, my clay actually got hot (not enough water). Glad I only spent one full day making these basic mistakes, will be good to get back to the wheel and practice with this new knowledge. Thank you for taking the time to share, love your style.

S. Raybourne I was in a rut and hit a wall with throwing, Simon suggested throwing 30 cylinders to exact measurements. I chose a 1lb 6oz ball to throw at 6" by 4. It was a challenge getting then all the same and i was only able to do a couple a day to my standards. Started over a lot but twords the end it was a breeze. My rut is gone and my work is better then ever.

S. Raybourne I wrote him because i was just blocked. I threw for a number of years and just hit a wall. It was his suggestion in is reply. Thanks i get different reactions from different people on my last name. Pot smokers love it too lol.

Useful tips. I think not watering properly is one of my problems. Sometimes I don't get the consistency of the clay right or don't knead it enough when working with reclaimed clay - but at least I can tell quite quickly if it isn't going to work.

Excellent points. All very challenging to optimize when you have access to a wheel only once a week. How to manage the wheel speed? How do you know when you've reached the right speed? I center at high speed, then slow down, but how slow do I need to go. My pull speed, I think, is too fast, because when pulling a cylinder I nearly always end up lopsided. Like higher and thicker on one side. HOW does that happen? And why? (I know proper wedging and air bubbles can also lead to lopsided-ness, and those are certainly challenges too). And water? I feel grit on my hands, it snags, I add water, it still snags. What's that about?

Terrific instruction! Is it possible to over-water?

At 16.50 ish you moved the camera so that your forearm was in the mirror. Any chance of setting the angle so the action at front of pot is shown? Thx. Want to keep learning and you’re helping heaps.

Simon! It was a real lesson for me who found himself in a dead end. A real revelation has occurred in my head after your explanations about these three things. I thank you for that. I have a question for you - I have a problem with centering the bottom part of the clay. When opening, the problem is then very visible. Do you have any tips?

Tom The Potter make sure the clay is all centered even the at the bottom where attaches to wheel head. This is important as when you start a lift you begin at the bottom. I use my thumb to press in there to clean away any "skirt" of clay. Practice makes perfect :)
