The "Unturned" Gaming Mystery

Ойындар

"Unturned" (a roblox mod spinoff, and once viral steam game) appears to have wildly over-inflated current player numbers, as it consistently ranks in the top 20 all time most played games.
Whether for the purpose of gaining credibility, or supporting a market of item speculation... it requires the questions to be asked "Who" is making sure this game sits far above its actual concurrent player count... and more importantly "Why" are they choosing to do so.
With the only other comparison game being Team Fortress 2 (a game notorious for its bot presence)... I wanted to talk about an Anomaly in the free PC game community, and discuss why it may be happening.

Its not only this - fake sales numbers. The supposed "indie" smash hit Helldivers 2 has sold 12M copies COMBINED (PC & PS5). 8M on PC alone. Somehow the peak players are 458K - like 5.5% of the supposed total units sold. True that not all will play at the same time, but it is statistically impossible - it is like 80+ percent of the supposed owners never logged in.

That's not unusual at all for a live service game. When US players are online half of Europe is asleep. Asian players have to juggle between the two and forget about it if you are in Australia. Do you honestly expect all 12 million that bought the game to be still playing it at the same time four months out from release? With Helldiver's 2 especially there's no timed releases meaning you have to log on every day. There's a battle pass but nothing drops off it meaning you aren't forced to log in every day just so you don't miss a skin that can only be earned for playing every day for a fortnight. You can earn everything in game and there's no alarm clock going off giving you psychologically tested FOMO. I'm really not sure what you are suggesting about the game, or any games at all, if you are completely forgetting about all the normal reasons that players aren't all playing at the same time. You seem to be suggesting some sort of mendacity where none exists.

Equip the AIs with more nachine learning and and even evolution the AI bots could learn every aspect of a game in just a couple hundred generations. Wanna know another bot mystery in games, one that's ruining Valve's multiplayer titles? A community called "FastPath", who is renting OVH servers in the thousands across many Valve titles, filling them with fake players that show as real players and stealing the names of genuine servers - at random. I think you should cover this, no one has covered this yet and this is a problem that has already destroyed many games I love.

  • @Ethorbit

    @Ethorbit

    28 күн бұрын

I'm still gathering info for a video of my own, but what I can say is that these fake players are programmed to use the names of genuine players and post messages in the chat made by genuine players, they connect and disconnect randomly, they pretend to be mad at people, they have convincing ping numbers, etc. Basically the only way to know you have joined a FastPath server is to look at how the bots play, they're bad and walk into props and stuff, there's a very obvious pattern. Sometimes the server is straight up called "FastPath" whereas other times it is using a copy of a name from a genuine server. There is usually an ad or something in the MOTD menu, and the chat has some filters to censor people. These servers usually populate the top 10 community servers of most valve games, so they're very easy to accidentally stumble in.

Unreleated, but used to play on this game in high school a bit. I remember one kid kept giving me crap saying "no, I know this game. My little siblings play it. It's Roblox" in like a condescending "you play kid games???" tone. I kept having to correct them like "it started as a roblox mod, but it's its own thing now." And they'd just not listen and dismissively (and still condescendingly) say "no no, I know this game. My little siblings play it. It's Roblox. I know this game. I know I know. You don't have to explain it. I know what you're talking about." That was the day I learned most people don't actually listen to anything you say once they've made up their mind or "know what you're gonna say," which is a lot.

Around May 21st (May 23rd to be exact) a curated (a workshop made but officially accepted into the game) map came out which caused a lot of legitimate players to play Unturned all at once. Outside of new map releases most servers are dead compared to the supposed steam concurrent playercounts. Another note is around the time Nelson Sexton (The games sole dev) disabled random drops the playercount dropped a ton (I can't remember the exact number but it was thousands iirc).

Bots are not there to boost player count, they are there to farm freedrop items. Freedrop items used to be a thing which you would get for playing. Game would just give you a random common/uncommon skins once in a while just for playing. Those items can be scrapped and used to craft random mythicals (1000 crafting materials=1 random mythical). Bots would just have the game on 24/7 to receive these skins which were then re-sold to people like me who craft sometimes up to 100 skins at once. I never owned any bots but I am a frequent buyer of skins like this. Bots are on right now in case Nelson Sexton decides to re-enable freedrops.

I'm assuming botting services have a decent pricepoint, probably monthly aswell, so why keep wasting money on something that might never happen. Nelson's one lazy dude, so chances are he won't be bothered dealing with it again.

10K+ hours on Unturned here, pretty much the entire community knows that the game is botted. The economy you were talking about in the video doesn't really exist, not many items at all sell for above 100$+ , yes there are few exceptions where few very rare & good looking "Mythicals/Crafted Mythicals" for example (Energized Hypertech Maplestrike) might sell for upwards of 500$+ (and has sold for more than that). Some items that you see for upwards of 1000$ are less than 1$ even, they just have special "Killcounters/or something else on them" and nobody has yet put them on the market with that, so some kid puts them instead for like 1K$+ and thinks that somebody will buy them. There are some huge transactions that people do using some of those "not listed yet" items (I like to call them that) in order to transfer funds between accounts/or to do a big trade or something like that. Other than that, the game is pretty dead, sometimes it gets new content but not by the creator of the game itself, but by modders themselves (new maps/lootboxes to open/achievements and so on) Nelson just accepts them into the game as Curated content. Back in the days, the game had lots of population tho, not gonna lie, there were massive youtubers living off the game as well, it just simply died...

  • @C.P.L

It's really sad that the game is slowly dying. It has an amazing structure that could be great if added onto a bit more. It's by far the easiest game to mod that I've ever seen. The fluidity of it's systems makes even servers that aren't zombie-based easily done. The barricade system makes making an area look amazing easy. It's an amazing combination. It's just too bad that nearly nobody remembers it and most of the youtubers left. If it had a bit more recognition, I have no doubts that it would actually get to at least 30k real players. I doubt it'll happen though so we're just stuck here as we pray that something saves the game from the slow death that's coming

He says their numbers will vary insanely from nobody playing to having a massive surge of n00bs join for awhile then it drops off and repeats. Whether from Discord or KZread, Unturned seems to get legit random boosts in popularity, but I don't know if its enough to reflect in the numbers you're giving.

One of the main things to keep in mind is that the botting problem was even worse when playtime drops were enabled. Basically for every 3-5 hours of playing you have a chance of getting an item worth anywhere between 3 cents to half a dollar. The developer acknowledged this issue and disabled the playtime inventory drops around 2020 or 2021. The question is, why do bots still keep coming?

This used to be actually quite popular... But the developer has made a lot of questionable design decisions with future updates and problems with the core way maps are designed were never addressed. ...And then public servers all started shifting towards hardcore clan-based PvP garbage that alienates any new players whatsoever from coming in (and singleplayer gets old REAL fast) It's been dead for over half a decade. Barely any actual people play it. ...Though I imagine this is also true to some extent for Team Fortress 2, and actually even Counter Strike 2 (the latter may not be dead entirely, but I'm running into the same 30-40 people playing it SUSPICIOUSLY often at this point despite often switching server settings and playing on and off for a month at varying times of day) Team Fortress 2's bot problem is very covered by this point, but it'd be interesting if someonne like Upper Echelon could explore this problem with CS2 that most people seem to completely disregard as nonsense (even though it's clearly there)

They don't fluctuate with anyones sleep and work schedules at all, they remain at 50k players 24/7 which doesn't make sense, even with timezones the us and the uk are usually the highest player counts, when those 2 countries go to bed that's when you see the lowest dip, but there is no dip in this game at all, those are definitely bots being run 24/7.
