The Untold Truth Of Peter Frampton

Ойын-сауық

Peter Frampton was one of the biggest musical sensations of the 1970's. After becoming a star in the 60's with The Herd and then Humble Pie, Frampton struck it out solo. His 1976 live album "Frampton Comes Alive!" became the biggest live album ever recorded up that time, spawning hit singles like "Baby I Love Your Way," "Do You Feel Like We Do?" and "Show Me the Way."
But it all fell apart. After a disastrous role in the flop film "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," Frampton was seriously injured in a car accident. With the help of his childhood friend David Bowie, though, and his work on the film "Almost Famous," Frampton lives on. Here's the untold truth of Peter Frampton.

Frampton has retired with a muscle disorder that prevents him from playing. So there's not much more to expect from him. Great player, and a giant star in the mid-to-late 70's.

He has IBM a progressive muscle degenerative disease, but as of right now he’s still doing and playing great.. he really didn’t need to do a farewell tour just yet, i believe he still has more years before the effects of his medical condition may get in the way of his professional abilities. I think based on his medical diagnoses and several unprovoked falls, they decided its best to sign off before things could go bad rapidly,.. but he’s still playing incredible and always evolving in new directions.

Peter has released so many fantastic albums. His early studio albums prior to Frampton Comes Alive! are filled with many lesser known songs that I feel are as good or better than many of his more popular ones most people know. He is one of those artists that if you buy anything he has you can dive in and quickly find something that can become a favorite.

I've been a die-hard fan for decades and couldn't agree with you more! One of my favorite albums was recorded in an English castle where they were able to draw inspiration from the magical environment. I attended the last two nights of his never EVER say never tour which ended in April 2024. I'm always amused at how surprised people are, because he still sounds amazing as he delves into his extensive library, because they've only known FCA.

Right, it was a greatest hits from all his solo studio albums. The live album was the final payoff after years of making albums and unending touring. Youngsters discovered Frampton in '76 with FCA and dug his current live shows, as they were a copy of the album. Unfortunately he was pinned as a pop one album wonder who without big follow up hits then faded quickly. However, any musician would want what Peter did...making a living all your life playing music!

Songs from his studio albums were played regularly on the station I listened to ((KSAN in San Francisco). He was in the same league as some of the local bands like Greg Kihn, Montrose and Sammy Hagar. Around Thanksgiving in 1975 I recorded a KSAN broadcast of the Frampton Band playing a live gig in front of maybe 30 people at The Record Plant in Sausalito. He just nailed every song when he played live. Back at college my roommate and I played that tape until it practically wore out. Then of course the live album came out for Christmas and we heard all of those songs a zillion times on the radio. I think the live album was recorded in San Francisco at just about the same time.

Cool story. Paul, you can purchase the live session recording on CD (Hip-O-Select/Universal, 2004) entitled "Peter Frampton Live - In San Francisco - March 24, 1975. You are correct re Record Plant/Sausalito (recorded and mixed) and subsequent KSAN broadcast. 3 tunes are featured from the recently released FRAMPTON album. This session is special because it introduces Bob Mayo who had been with the band for a couple of weeks (Andy Bown moved to bass where Stanley Sheldon would replace Bown about 2 months later). Peter had also recorded a live session for KSAN the year before. Like KSAN (west coast), I had WNEW (NYC/east coast) who were equally supportive of Peter throughout his HP and solo career pre FCA. When FRAMPTON was released, WNEW went crazy for "Show Me the Way" and "(I'll Give You) Money" over the Spring and Fall of 1975. When "Money" came on, my volume dial went UP, UP, UP. "Money" was an ode to Montrose and "Candy" and "Doobie Wah" was an ode to Doobie Brothers and "Listen to the Music". On this live session "Plain Shame" and "Sun" are SONIC. Thanks so much.

Going solo after Humble Pie in 1970-71, Frampton released four studio albums over those five, six years and toured endlessly before the '76 Live album. He wisely played every college in the USA, building up a huge following with his live show. Of course FCA live show double album in 1976 hit big-time with all those fans. Also a big hit with teenagers. This "first" live album was all his songs from the prev six years rolled up into a live album. This "overnight sensation" took many years of ballsey hard work!
