My memory is not so great these days, but I was there. I kind of remember things slightly different from what KRS said...I remember KRS rocking the stage. We were all going crazy, because him and Scot La Rock were killing it! That show was so good I thought my head was going to explode! All of a sudden KRS says "where the fuck is Melle Mel?" He called him out like twice. Melle Mel comes out of nowhere and bumrushes the stage. The crowd loses it, because we know it's about to go down. Mel tries to begin, but each time that Melle Mel tries to rhyme Scott La Rock would start to scratch and cut up the record stopping him from being able to flow. Melle Mel started getting frustrated which made us all laugh. Finally Melle Mel was allowed to start his rhyme without interruption. His flow sounded outdated and old school so the crowd was not feeling him at all. KRS destroyed him. You could tell he left that stage all in his feelings. I kind of felt bad for him, but not that much. He jumped on the stage like was going to do something, but turned out to be a dud. In that moment, you could tell a new era of hip hop had moved his style of rapping out the door.

Mel basically rapped a few bars from “King of the Streets” which was one of the hardest words he ever spat. But that came out in late 85-early 86, so it was played. The crowd actually booed Mel. Once KRS started performing South Bronx, The Bridge is Over, and Poetry as Mel stood in his b-boy stance mean-mugging him, the crowd went wild. Once KRS rapped “Cuz yo I’m like the arrow and Scott is the crossbow/ say something now...”, looks at him, turns back to the crowd and continues: “thought so!”, the entire Quarter went bananas!!! Then he went into an all-out freestyle on him; like he stated that rarely happened at that era. I was so mind-blown by then that I can’t even remember what he said. EPIC HIP-HOP MOMENT!!!

Melle Mel was like hip hop quality control back then. He challenged and dissed alot of new rappers. I was in Latin Quarter when he was dissing Public Enemy when they first came out. Nowadays this may sound ignorant or disrespectful but back then this was part of hip hop thats missing today. Now the good rappers let ones that they think are wack or havent been rapping long enough go unchallenged. The lack of this practice is why you hear so many dudes rapping that almost cant rap at all today. Back in the day if you were wack you risked getting the mic physically taken out of your hand or worse.

I heard so many stories about this battle that I doubt it did not take place. So did Melle Mel not rhyme on stage and get a chain thrown at him? Now I want to hear Melle Mel's side of the story. Funny thing is KRS is my favorite MC and Melle is #4 behind Rakim and Big Daddy so I know where KRS is coming from when he said this was his idol. I respect KRS so much and for him to say that Melle Mel was his idol is like wow, I like KRS even more now.

Terry Trice I wouldn’t DARE punish my ears like that. I was a D.J. For many years starting in 82’ and neither then or now has anyone ever requested one of their songs or I’ve never had anyone I’ve ever hung with in 30 + years say they like them. What they do is ANYTHING BUT HIP-HOP. In all the documentaries about (Early) Hip-Hop you never hear them mentioned because they were Wick, Wick, WACK!!!!!!!!

Terry Trice you sound like you barely lived that era or trolling because HIP HOP HEADS were NOT rockin out to Hammer and PM Dawn. And that was a year or two BEFORE KRS dropped Return of the Boom Bap - a GROSSLY underrated seminal album which helped put DJ Premier on the map as a go to producer OUTSIDE of Gangstarr, who themselves dropped Hard to Earn that same year. Tri state was DOMINATING hip hop in the early nineties with QUALITY rap so WTF are you talking about? Not to mention a group named Wu Tang dropped a lil single named Protect Ya Neck around that time.

Bullshit, I love me some krs one but he lied twice. First i was there in 87 I was 19 my homie Dave 29 who hated hip hop was there to pay my way and for the experience. It was 8 bucks at door but since mad peeps on line was mad unruly and wildin the club bouncers began bouncing mad peeps off line and they never got in. Then to top it off the club fuckers raised the price to 12 bucks to punish the innocent. We get in after waiting like 2 hours to get in. When k got on stage Mel was on dance floor pacing all angry, and no shante was not there, and he never dissed shante. K did point at Mel and said his rhyme some people sa6 their kings but rap ain't even ten yes old, 50 yes down the line we can start this and we'll b the old skool artists! Mel got mad left,so did my boy Dave. Then later that nite Mel's boys started throwing chairs up by k ant that ended the jam.

Mr.magic called shante to stage she did one verse of have a nice day then starts yelling take my moths fuckin record off, and did a freestyle bout krs that was dope but since mad youngins brought they moms to the show at beacon theatre she got good and moms was yelling get her off the stage.
