In graffiti, there are many unspoken rules that we in the community follow. One of the most important of those rules is the hierarchy of graffiti, a figurative “pecking order” for work done on walls. If you were to paint something like a tag on top of the wrong graffiti then you might have just unintentionally (or intentionally) disrespected another writer. So what is this hierarchy? We begin at the bottom of the totem pole with tags. Hand-styles (Tags) can't go over any other graffiti without causing issues and being seen as disrespectful.

I’m a Railcar repairman. Unfortunately the site I work at requires to paint out all graffiti on their rail cars before they leave this site. I feel really bad about it. Recently I began taking pictures of the artwork before I paint it out. This has also inspired me to begin learning graffiti. I figured if I’m having to take away from the art then I need to give back to the art. I’m very new the graffiti form but, I paint, draw, fabricate, and have always loved art and been artistic. I only sketch in my black book but, personally if I was going to try to throw something up on a wall or somewhere I would never do it over anyone else’s work. I’d just find a blank space. Outside of work I just wouldn’t cover anyone’s work.

To add: full walls top to bottom go over random burners and thematic walls go over top to bottom burners.

Aren't tags just the same as stickers in that regard? Also I'd like to see commentary on beef from these issues. Too many writers are just toxic guys looking to start fights

i've certainly heard tags are equal to stickers, but thats kind of up in the air. many also feel the opposite, so no definitive consensus has really been determined. If you want to play it safe then stay off stickers but that's going to up to each individual to decide. Also, yeah you know what, that could make for an interesting series. thanks for the idea friend!

I feel it’s more to do with risk with tags v stickers. A tag with a can or even a marker feels a lot more red hot than a slap

@@henry2307 agreed 100000% percent. You'll see 11 year olds slapping 100 stickers like its no big deal, like it's no worse than J walking, yet they're shaking in their boots to rock a marker or can tag. definitely the risk factor.

7:00 i would say that if its a sticker with a handstyle yes everything goes over it BUT if its a sticker with a for example a chracter and a solid colored throwie i feel like its higher then a tag

Nah. Stickers are the bottom of the totem pole, regardless of what's on them. Tags over stickers.

in all honesty, there are so many good brands out there to where any can really do the job well. It's largly going to be personal preference and can type, such as high pressure for large areas that you need to fill in, or low pressure for smaller, or more detailed spots. With that said though, high pressure can still get great detail, so it's all going to be personal preference for the most part.

Hey grim do u thjnk it was appropriate for some guy to go over my piece with his piece but he had less style than me but he did fill in the background but he left the bottom of my piece showing with my tag half there

  • @Theartistblock

the amount of style is a finicky metric without context. For example, a wild style from one dude could easily have less style than a saber wild style. Im going to tackle this in two ways, one assuming you're both doing the same level of piece, and the other assuming he's doing a lower level of piece. Same level Lets say you both did the same sub category of piece (we'll say wild style to make this easy), yet his has less overall style. In a case like this it seems like he's not trying to disrespect you since he tried his best to cover you as much as he could. Not to mention, level of style added doenst necessarily equate to skill. I'll give an example, as a kid I started beef with a writer easily 20x better than I was. Thinking I was better then I actually was, my wild styles were packed with style, yet this guy's straight letters and tags were easily better than my piece despite having less over all style. Given that you're asking this question I assume you're not crazy experienced otherwise you'd likely not be asking this question. All of this to say, if the guy did the same level of piece, yet it has less style it could potentially still be higher quality than what you did and therefore he's in the clear. That being said, since you had the spot first you could take it back and he shouldn't get pissed because he knows you were there first. Lower level Lets say he rocked a straight letter ontop of your wild style, or piece (subcategory), then flat out he's in the wrong and he shouldnt have done that. With that said, if he's clearly better, and even more so, if you're clearly toy (not saying you are), then he's still in the wrong but you also havent earned the skill, or respect enough to really feasibly go against him. You can certainly try, but toys are often seen as free spots by many people. Thats the short version of all of it lol hope this helps
