    Having such a low entry for graffiti though i think is whats appealing about it. You dont need to know 1pt perspective or color theory. You just need to understand how to spell your name. Should they practice the basics when they start, ofcourse but i always enjoy seeing shitty graffiti in an alleyway. Makes me smile and remeber being a shitty teenager tagging shit and having it look shitty but being proud of it regardless.

    see id agree with that if comics, anime, portraits, figure drawing, cartoons, abstract all couldnt be done with a pencil and paper. Just like graffiti, you can see badly done cartoons, anime, and all of the above. graffiti and other artforms are the same in every way in that regard, but this video is also about "experienced writers" and "pro graffiti artists", and this is where graffiti tends to differ from other artforms. See, the amateurs in all artforms seldom realize they're bad because the dunning krugar effect, but the pro in graffiti knows about as much about art as a amateur artist in any other field. This is where the difference in standard matters and where its really noticeable. the fact that an amateur artist could be considered a game changing revolutionary master of graffiti is straight up embarrassing for graffiti and should be a huge red flag. This is something that rarely if ever happens in most other artforms like comics for example. the prerequisite knowledge and skill to be a pro, or a master in most other fields actually requires you to master all of the required basics while graffiti on the other hand doesnt even require you to know those things exist. This is the lower standard im talking about. The example i like to use to illustrate the knowledge and standard difference, and even skill difference, would be if we took a master level artist from any field, and plopped them into graffiti, it would be the same as taking someone with a doctorate and plopping them into a preschool. The difference is so vast that many graffiti artists still debate the existence of topics that have been established centuries ago and the worst of it is they debate these topics as if it's debatable, new, and revolutionary. Mind you we're only talking about their artistic knowledge and skill, not how much they get up because legal guys are included in this convo.

    Tags before throwies, before pieces. Master the first one, you may discuss the others now. Am I the only person who was taught graffiti this way? I was sent to the library to look at books on typography, and printing layouts. Good graffiti, like good printing, is invisible. You should only ever see what the designer intended, anything else that draws your attention was/is a mistake. I get the feeling that one way or another, you’ll drag graffiti over to the art world, and make them play nice together. Good! Want a hand?

Graf is low entry level and that makes it appealing because anyone can do it but that doesn't mean experienced people cant progress and take it seriously

  • @Theartistblock

    Not sure if you watched the full video because I know it is a bit longer than my normal stuff but I say later in the video that there are plenty of people who do know the fundamentals. I echo your point exactly. With that said, I speak to thousands of graffiti artists, new and experienced, toys, kings and legends, and iv done this for just about 2 decades, while collecting info for all that time from people who have been doing it since it started in NY. most (even the experienced) don't know the fundamentals at all, and they don't know it to a professional degree. This isn't some random take, this is based of the standards of graffiti and backed by the info graffiti artists of all levels put out there. Iv also been teaching both fine art and graffiti for almost 2 decades so I see the direct differences in knowledge standard between all experience levels because it's literally my job to fill those knowledge gaps and teach. Once again there are exceptions and I clearly explain that in the vid but there is zero doubt that in general graffiti artists have much lower standards than most artforms.

    Literally no idea what you mean with vanishing point perspective. Both of your examples are 1-point perspective. Also from a handful of your earlier videos about 1-point perspective you seemed to be under the impression that as horizon line relates to perspective it separates the sky from the ground. That's not true. Just look up directly at the sky while surrounded by tall buildings and draw it in 1-point perspective. There is an alternate meaning for horizon line, but it's not where vanishing point necessarily is.

  • @Theartistblock

    @Theartistblock

    2 жыл бұрын

    The whole separating sky from ground is a general statement even master artists make because most people spent most of their time looking straight ahead not up into the sky. This is why it's called the HORIZON line but it also has another name specifically because it's not always on a horizon and that's the eye line. Iv even spoke about how perspective still functions in outer space , you know, where there is no ground to be seperated. The horizon line is ALWAYS present no matter where you're looking or where you are, but it can move and the vanishing point is ALWAYS on a horizon line. This is exactly my point with the video, I say this as kind as I can but you are exactly the kind of artist I'm talking about. Both examples were not 1 point perspective. Horizon lines, or eye lines put forms into context even before any vanishing point is applied. This is exactly the issue and the reason why whenever graffiti artists draw characters or environments it suddenly looks out of place or wrong, you'd know this if you knew 1 point perspective. Once again, I say this to hopefully open your eyes, not to insult or belittle because youve always been a really cool dude in the community but you are the kind of artist who missed the basics and has a lower standard of info. If you're going to try to prove someone wrong then you have to know the topic intimately and perspective is not something you know basic info of.

    @@Theartistblock There's only 1 object in the scuffed H example. But if you feel like doubling down on it, you're free to explain why it isn't in 1-point perspective. Speaking of knowing perspective, do you still believe that outline of spheres is always a perfect circle in 1-point perspective? Also like i said there's 2 meanings for horizon line.

  • @Theartistblock

    @Theartistblock

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@leohuxtable439yes, i have no problem tripling down on facts. Ill even 10000 percent down on facts because facts are solid and provable. In the video i clearly said, vanishing point 3d is a watered-down, incorrect version of 1 point perspective. They both use a vanishing point sure, but PROPPER 1 point perspective utilizes a horizon line. that simple. Most graffiti artists dont even know what a horizon line is, let alone how it works. You say there's another meaning for horizon line, and as far as perspective is concerned horizon line is just a term used to describe the eye line, both being the same thing. the vanishing point is always and is only ever on this line, that's a fact. The only way you would be correct is if you want to extend this convo to cast shadows and angled surface, both of which still require you to know where the horizon line and vanishing point are so you'd still be proving me right and proving yourself wrong. No one said anything about spheres dude, you know i know about foreshortening and its effects on shapes and forms, go look at my latest figure drawing or half my other art. foreshortening is basic stuff for perspective and depth, so no need to talk about it as if its some big revelation or some big knowledge bomb you're about to drop. Stay focused on what we're actually talking about because you're struggling to prove your first claim then the last thing you want to do is dig yourself in a deeper hole of topics you know very little about. If you think the two examples i showed are the same then you lack the understanding of horizon lines and perspective, and this means you can't possibly understand forms enough to even want to bring them up in this discussion, so its best for you if we stay to your initial argument. So far all you've done is prove you don't fully understand the perspective (more so horizon lines) and how it works. I have no doubt you're a great artist, however, you certainly fit into the category of artist I'm talking about here in this vid. Keep the convo to just vanishing points and horizon lines, rather than getting into forms and shapes and perspectives' effects on them.

    @@Theartistblock The sphere thing was just one of the things you mentioned in one of your older videos. I was trying to figure out what you mean with "vanishing point perspective", but nice to know you've learned something in the last few years. But yea you didn't bother addressing your example of watered down one point perspective at all. Just replace the scuffed H with a rectangle. Get your ruler and choose the same vanishing point. Do the 3d and if you feel like draw a horizon line. There's your 1-point perspective. Now erase the horizon line and vanishing point. You still have a single object that's in 1-point perspective. That single object doesn't offer any other context that would contradict that. Mostly because it's essentially a wire model.

  • @Theartistblock

    @Theartistblock

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@leohuxtable439 I did address it, graffiti doesnt use a horizon line, that being an extremely crucial part of perspective. Now I've known perspective for ages, and once again, studied it for years. im certain whatever i said in the video was geared towards teaching a specific topic and was correct for the purposes of the video. for example, graffiti rarely uses spheres and uses cylinders more. Im sure whatever the goal was might have been lost on you especially after seeing you believe graffiti artists use perfect 1-point perspective. You want to prove your point, go on draw me a full environment with characters with a vanishing point NOT on the horizon line, and ya know what, dont include a horizon line at all. This drawing has to be fundamentally correct as far as forms go. This is the only way to prove your point and disprove mine. Its not going to be possible but ill wait. That's what graffiti does every time it does Vanishing point 3D because Vanishing Point 3D doesn't let you do that without errors. Propper 1 point perspective does. You're trying to prove something while not understanding the topic you're debating at all and it's why you can't prove your point.

    lol impatient much? i get to the point in the first min, the first few seconds if you're a long time viewer because you'd know where the video is going to go. The rest of my vid is just explaining why graffiti artists are disappointingly underperforming

    @@Theartistblock you take the first five minutes or so saying essentially one thing: graffiti artists suck because they don't bother learning fundamentals. see, I could say that in one sentence, why does it take you five minutes

    @@dieu_et_maitre I say my point in about 1 min, then explain it for 7 min. If I'm going to assert that most people don't know the basics then I damn well better explain myself and talk about that. That's what I did. Once gain, did the youtube intro stuff - said my point (about 1 min in) - then explain for 7 min. If the point "keep it simple practice the basics" went over your head within the first min that's on you buddy, especially if you didn't understand it 5 min in. That's a you problem when literally everyone else got the point.
