The Unsinkable Aircraft Carrier: Cyprus Dispute Explained

Cyprus, NATO's unsinkable aircraft carrier. In this video I look at how the island of Cyprus became divided through ethnic conflict and Western intervention.
Starting as far back as 1571 when the Ottoman conquest changed the demographics of the island, all the way up until the 1974 invasion the Greeks and the Turks of the island never quite managed to live together in harmony. This ethnic tension was made worse by the Cold War, and Cyprus became caught up in the world of geopolitics, in which it occupies an incredibly strategic position.
A United Nations peacekeeping force has been operating in Cyprus for over 50 years - the longest running UN force of all time. Nicosia is the last divided capital city in the world. As of yet, all attempts and negotiations to solve the dispute have failed. One can only hope that the situation is solved sooner rather than later, and without any further violence.

I have Greek, Turkish and Armenian Cypriot friends and would have preferred the continuation of, although in the mid 70´s not perfect, a democratic united Cyprus with communities that were increasingly integrating as Cyprus became wealthier. Unless you witnessed or heard first hand reports by being on the island at the time there is no mention anywhere, as far as I know, of the atrocities commited in the summer of 1974. Racism/Ethnic hate, family feuding unfortunately occurs everywhere, for a few short weeks in Cyprus a small number of idiots were able to get their hands on weapons and carry out a number of atrocities without the fear of having to account for their actions. The British and US Governments at the time ultimately carry a lot of the responsibility for what happened but in the end it is individuals, of whatever religion or ethnicity, who ultimately make the decision to treat others in a way that they themselves would never wish to be treated.

I hope that one day, and hopefully in the lifetime of those who lived in pre 1974 Cyprus, that the island can be reunited. East and West Germany managed to reunite, but the people must want it enough to show the politicians that that is what they want. Greece and Cyprus have common ancestry, language and religion. They are both the same nation (by majority) and they both wanted (by their majorities) to unite in one state. The situation can be spinned in many ways but the base fact is that this would change the geopolitical map and that couldn't be had by certain geo powers at the time.

@KoivuTheHab Well, you offer insult and your facts are all over the place. Let's address them. The official language of the Cypriot state is Greek, which is identical to what Greece speaks. If you are looking for local dialects, Greece is full of them everywhere to this day, as it happens with a living language that exists for more than 5000 years. Cypriot native population is Greek and has always been since before 3000 BC. Since then, the known rulers that were not of native origin, have ruled the Greek population as they needed it's economy and labor, as foreign rulers often do through history. As the lands and islands were conquered by the Turkish populations that slowly poured in (originating from Mongolia and east Asia) through the middle ages, the island got a turkish-speaking minority. Finally, part of the island was invaded by Turkey in 1974. Turkey formed there a state by force which was declared as legally invalid by the United Nations and the international community, apart from the invader Turkey. The reasons the Turkish invasion happened are rooted in geopolitics and are explained in the video above. Note: Since then, Turkey has moved parts of it's own population onto the occupied side of the island in order to alter the population numbers in their favor in future disputes. Even so, Turks are still a minority.

@KoivuTheHab Friend, you don't need to offend the people you are in dialog with, even if you wish to disagree with them. You should also read their replies as this is how dialog works. The population of the Republic of Cyprus is 99.5% Greek. The rest 0.5% is mainly Turks. Of course the island recognizes their language and accomodates to them. Cyprus is a EU country. You cater to a regime that was established by force and is condemned by the UN and the international community as a whole. The reasons are explained in this video. There is no northern Cyprus. It is part of the Republic of Cyprus occupied by the state of Turkey after it invaded Cyprus in 1974 and established a local puppet state. I hope this will get resolved soon, with respect to the people that this island is home to and not to the invaders.

@KoivuTheHab Friend, you can speak in that tone all you want. In my experience, one can tell the brainwashing by the passion and the accusing that some people apply. Me, I have nothing to force upon anyone and nothing to prove. Unfortunately, Turkey attacked Cyprus and occupies a large part of the island against international law as this video explains and as the UN and the international community stand in this matter, against the invader. And when I talk casualy by calling Greek Cypriots and Turk Cypriot just Greeks and Turks of the Republic of Cyprus and that is what you focus on, then that just shows what you have left to bring to the table of the matter I'm afraid. Just relax and be someone that people enjoy talking with, it can go a long way, trust me. I think you are in support of a criminal regime condemned by every country on earth, but I try to be polite and exchange some points. Despite your beliefs whatever they are, you are a human, capable of good judgement and great things if you want.

This is hands-down the most well-researched, well-presented and objective documentary about the cypriot problem. Major props. Trust me, a lot of Cypriots, esp younger ones, can learn a lot from this. Each side presents subjective sides of the story and omits what doesn't look good for decades. I hope we as the young generation of Cypriots can finally realize we've been manipulated from the start and try to find common ground instead of hating each other for past sins. There will always be tension, but it's up to us to try our best to live as one and not let extremists dictate our future.

Nice review of a rather complex situation. The reality is that centuries of animosity between the Greek and Turkish communities, and engrained nationalism, means that a "united" island is not realistic or desirable. The division of the island has at least brought many years of peace. Any other solution (e.g. the re-set of an independent country with shared Greek and Turkish Cypriot rule) would have been extremely unstable (with the enosis drive always there; perhaps still there today). Given Turkey's military superiority, there should also be some gratitude that in fact there wasn't complete annexation of the island. Although, that may have then forced an internationally motivated and recognised division of the island and a permanent resolution to the issue with two recognised states? That perhaps many be the eventual outcome anyway. Good fences make for good neighbours as the adage goes.

Well, Borneo was split into much more than just three countries in the 18th century, and the current borders are mostly just the result of treaties between Britain and the Netherlands. That said, there is a lot of interesting history there, especially in Sarawak, and it is worth speculating what the region would have looked like if the White Rajas hadn't offered Sarawak to Britain for annexation, but retained their independence.

It's not common to see an unbiased presentation of what happened in Cyprus, especially one that mentions Kissinger's involvement in what happened. Triggered Greeks here should learn that what you plant now you will harvest later!! Greeks did many atrocities during their invasion of Anatolia, their commanders even offically ordered their soldiers to kill Turkish civilians as many as they could while they were running back to Greece!! You can find it in that article i shared which got published by a respectful university. Such a vileness never ever happened in Turkish side and there wasn't a single official order to Turkish soldiers for killing any civilians!! But it is true Turkish soldiers killed Greek civilians for revenge especially militia forces were worse but you Greeks forgot you were the side who were invading, not Turks! We lived together in harmony for hundreds of years but you had to fight for 'freedom' that you always had!! Visit Spain, France, Britain and check what happened to minorities who lived hundreds of years there, they forgot their mother languages, they forgot their cultures but we never tried to assimilate you so you still have your own language and culture after hundreds of years!! If we did that today there wasn't going to be a Greece nor Cyprus which were Greek and causing problems because Greeks are bunch of losers who can't get the world's attention without provoking Turkey!! Greece organized a coup to gain absolute control on Cyprus with EOKA terrorists which was a direct violation of international agreements that got signed by UK, Greece and Turkey! In return Turkey invaded almost half of the island which was what western countries wanted anyway because they never cared about Greek rights nor Turkish rights what so ever and created hostilities to use us as they wish. You Greeks could cry for few hundreds years more but that wouldn't fix a damn thing at all or you finally start thinking reasonably and try to cooperate with us so we can end these hostilities which are only hurting our countries for absolutely nothing...

The island was temporarily divided between the Greek and Turkish communities in 1964 due to inter-ethnic violence, and the divide became more permanent in 1974 when Turkey invaded Cyprus, responding to a coup by the Cyprus National Guard (organised by the Greek military junta in Athens) I also look at how Cyprus' strategic position in the world of geopolitics often exacerbated the already existing tension on the island, as NATO used Cyprus as a military base to keep Soviet influence at bay. I went there every main school holiday as a boy and I really enjoyed it even when my mother took me to beach for swimming almost every day while I am on holiday as we lived near the beach. It was fortunate for my parents, my brother and my sister who lived with them at the time, they moved back home to Britain in 1973 a year before Turkey invaded Cyprus. Other British citizens often caught in the invasion. My father's workmate told us when he came back home that Turkish troops took him and his family for Greeks and almost kicked them out of their home until he showed his British passport, the Turks then left them alone. I flew in BEA aircraft (now merged with BOAC to form as British Airways) to Nicosia Airport (now closed and partly used by UN troops as a base) from London Heathrow and vice versa. I really enjoyed my childhood in Cyprus but it is a pity the war spoiled things.

@@anoniem_nederland1401 false claiming! So far, the only part that has procedeed to an "Enosis" (unification) is the Turkish one! The Turkish militarily invaded the island, committed atrocities and illegally occupies still today the 40% of Cyprus! Around 200.000 Turks from the Turkish mainland were deliberately sent to Cyprus as settlers and have illegally usurped Greek cypriot properties in Northern Cyprus! And the reality is that the Turks do not wish the re-unification of the island!

Very fair summary this. I like it. Just one minor point at 12.48. Think he meant to say “Turkish citizens” rather than “Turkish Cypriots”. But it’s correct in the subtitles.

We should add that the solutions proposed under the EU was designed not to have a solution. EU is just another capitalist power, they want division too. Divide and control, simple as that. Please learn about Resource Based Economy!
