As an industry animator it's infuriating to see the amount of people that expected full-blown hand drawn animation for this. That is NOT the standard anymore and nobody is trained in it, they're trained in rigs and CG. To do it fully hand drawn would take years and would be extremely, extremely expensive. The animation is astonishing especially for toonboom rigs, I wish people would appreciate it for what it is

I agree, the people who are complaining that the show isn't like the game, certainly don't appreciate just how long it took for the original game to be made. And this is just the animation side of it. IIRC there's a DLC for Cuphead planned, but because of the requirements of the animation, it's taking a very long time to come out. Turely people have no patience anymore.

Perhaps it's because some people still have that archaic mindset that artists must suffer for their art in order for it to be good. Which in animation is not only really unfair to the original artists. But also pretty dismissive of the rest of the team that truly cares for what they do.

And like Saber said, even with the toonboom animation the people making this have clearly done their homework to make everything else look as much like hand-drawn animation as possible. the oil painted backgrounds alone were enough to sell it for me.

This show is great because it allows fans of the game to see cuphead and mugman just enjoying everyday life, and it also acts as a way to introduce more people to this game. I personally loved it and watched the whole thing in a day, and while it wasn’t as amazing at the game, it stood on its on as a great show. :)

As a former animator, I can easily say that anyone who whined about the animation in the show simply because they wanted a replica of the game literally has no idea what they’re talking about. If they knew anything about animation, much less how Cuphead the game was done, they’d realize how difficult it is to create and animate, and how back in the day it often times took several months for animators to make one episode; one episode of what was essentially “slave labor” and tons of money, endless paper and mechanics, etc. for everyone to enjoy. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve had to roast on that when they began to whine about the animation, straight up even telling them that if they wanted The Cuphead Show to be animated in the exact same way the game was animated, then they could’ve contacted Netflix to have added some of their own funding into the production. Animation is NOT cheap, and over the years they’ve managed to find ways to make it easier for animators of every medium, and even then it’s still not cheap to do it. That’s how it is, and people who complain about The Cuphead Show’s animation because it’s not the same, wouldn’t know the first thing about what goes on in the industry. A mere walk cycle can take several hours, to even days depending on the type of walk (everyone has their own walking "style), and these idiots wouldn't last more than an HOUR into trying to animate a walk, let alone a bouncing ball. Hell, the STYLE of the characters themselves also adds to the difficulty. Notice how nowadays we have the “modern” style (Gravity Falls, Rick & Morty, Adventure Time, etc.) that’s animated more fluidly because it’s EASIER to animate with less design details. While back then, you had shows like Tom & Jerry, Looney Tunes, ThunderCats, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Gargoyles, and even Dexter’s Laboratory were animated so fluidly, but at LABORIOUS costs. Animation isn’t cheap, and the animators themselves don’t get paid well enough either (an absolute tragedy, much like voice actors). Reminds me of people who call an artist’s career “worthless” even though they know nothing about the art field 😂😂😂.

  • @friendist9323

    @friendist9323

Back then there were no numbered episodes because of how spaced away from each other each production was. XD Even a 15 minute animation was essentially a movie with how much time, work and animators' souls that were poured into them. I'm no animator, and even though I took a few art classes the best I can make is my profile picture- but I know for a fact that drawing just two frames of rubber hose would kill me, and then slam a comically large hammer right onto my ghost's head.

The cuphead games took about a DECADE to make just because of the art style they used! A TV show that's more complex and not just a series of the animations happening over and over but fully new things every second would take ages for that. If you ask the same people who're complaining if they would of enjoyed the series coming out a decade from now they'd also complain about the wait smh, just can't make everyone happy..

Most people just don't know how expensive animation is. Back then they were able to create these cartoons because they would show them at theaters and people would pay a lot of money to see them. There isn't that much money in animation anymore, therefore, replicating that is simply impossible. Many popular TV cartoons were not cancelled because of lack of viewership but because they were too expensive to make, and having these Netflix shows being this well animated is something completely new because thanks to streaming they are able to afford much higher budgets than most networks have been able to afford in decades.

My favorite part about this show is that it feels like an adaptation. Like, if Cuphead was the original cartoon, The Cuphead Show is the reboot made in the modern era but still made to be a fun homage. Especially with how certain story things or designs are different in the show compared to the game. It feels like we're looking at a universe where Cuphead was a real cartoon artifact and some passionate animators wanted to breath life back into their favorite show from back in the day. And that's really cool to me

Thank you for acknowledging how big of an inspiration Fleischer was for Cuphead. Everyone only ever mentions that it looks like an old Disney cartoon, and that really annoys me because while the old Disney shorts were surely an inspiration for the game, Fleischer was just as big an influence, maybe even bigger an influence because of the company's lean more toward darker stories (I know Disney did their fair share of dark ones, but it was a regular thing with the Fleischers). I know it's kind of a stupid thing to be annoyed by, but it just DOES.

Well, if it took 1 person to do a 2 second animation for 2 hours, then I’d say that a team of 100s of animators would need maybe less than 5-10 minutes to finish the same thing? I don’t know, it took less than 19 people from MDHR to make fantastic animations for the game (for years,) yet the animation from the company of 200-500 people looks… well, not bad, but just okay?

Never played the game, but I have been waiting forever this adaptation ever sense they announced it and I love it. So far I have binged watched it twice. It’s a really great show with only one or two bad episodes. The Baby episode is definitely the weakest of the first season with Dirt Nap coming in as a second weak episode. The Devil is by far the best character in the show. My only complaint is that didn’t have very many of the bosses in season one, just the frog brothers, the vegetables, King Dice, the Devil, and a quick cameo of the dragon. There were plenty of references to other bosses like the clown and the bee queen. Overall I can’t wait for season 2 to come out.

I'm glad Cuphead is introducing people to Cuphead for a new generation and keeping their edgy spirit alive. I love The Cuphead Show, and I'm disappointed by the negative backlash it's been getting. It'll never live up to the animation of the game, but damn is it still impressive. I love the animation and the full blown hand-made model backgrounds used. It's wonderful and deserves more love. The animation alone for the game took something like two freaking years. Outrageous to have the same expectations for a short season of mini episodes on Netflix.

In terms of animation I have no complaints, I thought they did a great job. The only thing that bothered me about the show was that sometimes the writing was a bit weak - things like Cuphead just being given an invisible blanket right away that protects him from the Devil, felt too convenient. The pacing was sometimes awkward with certain gags going on too long or parts where it felt like another joke was needed. But these aren't major problems, I do feel like as the show goes on these issues will resolve themselves. There were also some great expressions and physical comedy, not surprising considering it's the same creative lead as the Mickey Mouse shorts.

Personally I found the show at best ok and pretty boring at worst, and think it'd benefit well from shorter duration for it's episodes to at least trim off some fat.

I have the same feelings. The animation being perfectly fine, but that it just strayed too far from the source material. In my mind, I felt like they were making a modern kids cartoon that just happened to be Cuphead more than an actual Cuphead show. If that makes any sense. I myself am not a fan of the jokes and animation in modern cartoons such as Breadwinners and Teen Titans go for the over the top physical or gross out comedy more than innuendos or wit. And I just feel that they went too far down the modern route. I also feel that they could have implemented the Bosses of Cuphead a little more. If it was me writing the episodes, I'd still keep the 'collect souls' concept and just make each episode about each boss from the game. How Cuphead and Mugman find the Bosses, why their souls are to be claimed by the Devil. Has us learn more about the bosses and makes the choice at the end with the Devil a little bit more at stakes being up and close to all the bosses and the kind of people they are.

Really though, I hope no one was trying to go into this thinking it was going to be Cuphead and Mugman just trying to shoot everything that moves. It would be like getting pissed that Mickey isn't putting on a Magician's robe after playing that one game to resolve his problems. I do hope there are more reasons since I did enjoy the first couple of them. I know I might not be the target audience as far as the show might go (even though I did enjoy the game and looking forward to the Delicious Last Course), but it could have been so much more insufferable than it was and it seems like if anyone were to try and rush through it, they probably would have lost the chance to enjoy it.

Man, all the hatred just shows exactly what is wrong with modern audiences. We've become so used to trying to pick apart a show to have some deeper lore meaning, that we forget that sometimes a cartoon show can just be for entertainment. Especially a show such as this, the Cuphead Show plays to its source material so well most audiences who have never seen the old cartoons will find it lacking. I binged the show and I found it entertaining! Its nice to just stop thinking too deeply and watch a funny cartoon. Besides, what did everyone think the show was going to be like? Did they think it was going to be just like the game? Uhhhh yeah, that's not going to work for a series when the game already has a ton of playthroughs on KZread. And besides, speaking from a universe standpoint, Cuphead can't exactly be a hectic run-and-gun boss battle every single day. There is plenty of downtime between those battles. Times were Cuphead and Mugman do...nothing but play around and get into trouble. The very trouble that set up the events of the game. You know, characters being characters. Isn't that a good thing? All the haters got a just chill out, this show is good and if it's not what they're looking for, they don't need to watch it! They want something else, they can enjoy something else. Just let us have our goofy nonsensical cartoon humor that is just simpler and doesn't degrade into a bunch of memes or toilet humor.

Well my issue with it is basically down to this... Other than it being cuphead, how is this different to any other show ive already seen? It doesnt exactly do the old flisher style, like yeah it references it, but it doesnt go all in, so whats the point? Like really dont get me wrong I love and appreciate what they did do, like the 3D sets, the film grain, all that... But its not all in. It wouldnt even have to be animated on 2s or hand drawn, just be animated in such a way it doesnt fall back on modern comfortable movements. And as of plot, I disagree, I think this show actually has too much plot. In the 1930s cartoons the plot was very vague, kind of just following the characters doing things. In this cartoon you often have a setup, a beginning middle and end, which is often very predictable. I get it its season 1, so they are relying on tropey plots to gain their footing, but I just feel like cuphead should already have its footing, since the games are so well defined. Just to me it doesnt feel like it has its own identity, it doesnt go far enough either way to have it. Im hoping season 2 it gains that.

My old sleep mask would fall off in the middle of the night sometimes when rolling over and I would wake up many times throughout the night. I also found it didn't help as much because it didn't block out all the light. I've had my Manta for a few months and never had it come off, and once I found the best placement for the eye cups, it blocked 100% of the light. I got the weighted one and the only downside is it makes it harder to breathe through my nose because of the weight on my sinuses, but I have a very deviated septum. So maybe don't buy the weighted one if you have a deviated septum and already have a hard time breathing through your nose at night. I still love mine because it has such a calming effect.

I don't really understand why people want something more story driven with a series like Cuphead in particular (Or at least a plot that's grand in scope) when many of the shows it was inspired from never did any of that, they were mostly stand off episodes that were never connected from the previous episodes and stood on their own, plus the comedic situations that the characters got themselves into took front and centre of the episodes. Like when you're watching Tom & Jerry, you are not watching it solely for the plot which is brought up at the start very quickly just to get everything set up for the main focus which is just to be entertained by the zany slapstick that follows as Tom tries to capture Jerry. My only guess on why people were expecting the story to be more focused on is because the game's plot was somewhat of an ongoing narrative as you watched Cuphead & Mugman travelling to different places to collect the various debtors souls for the Devil to spare their own souls from being taken, but even then that story isn't really deep.

It doesn't take itself super seriously, it doesn't push random irrelevant messages, and it doesn't feel the need to be relevant to current events to be "good". It's simply enjoyable to watch. Who cares if there's some pacing issues when all it means is that you get to see the characters spend more time in the action? It's the kind of show you can throw out all your standards to because you know that no matter what happens, it will be a good time.

Real talk: I love this series, even my sister is hooked on it. I personally like how they took the 30s aesthetic and blended it with the facial expressions of the likes of “Mickey” and “SpongeBob”. Blending modern humor with that of a bygone era is something that is not easy to do, but “Cuphead” succeeds in doing so, and in a nuanced way. It feels like an authentic period piece and is genuinely fun and entertaining to watch. I get people being upset that it isn’t “story-driven”, but I don’t think it needed that. “Cuphead” here is like what “Peanuts” was with it’s spin-off specials/movies, where it’s not afraid to just be comfort food for families with sprinkles of wit and social commentary, and I think the show is at it’s best and most brilliant when they run with the simplicity of it all 9/10, highly recommend

You got a good point that animating for a cartoon series is harder than animating for a cartoon video game. It's takes a lot of skill already to draw the frames for all of the character animations in the games, but because each sprite only has a limited number of moves and the cutscene content is also quite limited, it's not nearly as demanding as a cartoon. In a cartoon, there are so many more movements, environments, and facial expressions to animate, and asset reuse is much less common.

As someone who don't really like the show & loved the game, I think I can explain at least some of the hate. First I wished the animation was more "vintage" looking. I'm not asking for the artists to draw each frame by hand, but the way the characters move & the expression look very modern IMO, which really sucks since looking like an old cartoon is such a big part of the game. I wished it had the same darker tone that the game had. As someone else said in the comments, it holds the show back. And the worst thing for me was the humor. It was very predictable. I often guessed what was going happen next and that's really what kept me from enjoying the show. I really felt like I saw these jokes a million times already in other cartoons (like that moment on episode 2, where the baby throws the radio, Mugman & Cuphead catch it just before it hits the ground. Of course the radio was going to break just a few seconds later.I swear I already saw that exact same scene in several cartoons) I don't hate the show, it was just an average cartoon that could have been a lot more creative.

I see a lot of people complaining on the internet about the change from the casino to the carnival in the first episode, but honestly I think it's a great change, as the casino is fine for the game but wouldn't be as interesting for a show. Cuphead and Mugman strike me as being 10 year old boys, and to a kid that age a carnival makes way more sense as a place of temptation than a casino, like a kind of "Pleasure Island" type of setting straight out of Pinocchio. At a casino, you stand around a table and roll dice, sit around a table and stare at cards, or sit still in front of a slot machine and stare at symbols. A carnival is filled with fun and exciting rides and attractions, games, and junk food. These things are way more tempting to a kid that age. Plus it makes for a much more visually interesting location when the Devil is chasing them at the end of the episode. Similarly, regarding complaints about how the characters aren't going around shooting lasers from their fingers and fighting bosses, that works fine for a game, because the objective of a game is for the viewer to actually play and win something, but I think that would just look really dumb and be really boring in a show, and would be too repetitive of the game. It would limit the storytelling of the show. I think the changes the creators at Netflix have made still stay true to the spirit of the Cuphead characters and world, but have opened up more potential for interesting stories and world building. Overall, I am loving the show, and it is pretty much exactly what I wanted it to be. I think it's nice that we've spent a lot of time staying close to Cuphead and Mugman's home, getting to know the main characters and their relationships. I also like that there's an over-arching story sprinkled in amongst slice of life and other adventure type episodes. You can tell the creators poured their heart and soul into the show. I love the mix of modern techniques with older style visuals, which allows it to be inspired by but not defined by those older cartoons, so it can still be its own thing. I think the show is at its best when it leans more into the really absurd physical comedy and cartoon violence, as well as the occasional dark humor, like when Porkrind was dreaming about murdering the boys. Even though it wasn't my favorite episode (the Devil episodes were my favorites, since he was my favorite character), I thought Dirt Nap was the funniest because of how increasingly paranoid Elder Kettle became, thinking that the boys were going to kill him and bury him in the backyard! That's hilarious, and I would love more of that.

My main issue with The Cuphead Show was that I felt they didn't fully utilize the ten minute format and the wildness of the early rubber hose cartoons. The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack and The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy both don't have an overarching story but just went absolutely insane with whatever each episode is about. Cuphead has so many whacky characters but i felt like they were too reserved. Chowder is another show that just took an idea and ran with it in terms of "how can we have the most fun with this?" So, yeah, that was really just the thing that bothered me the most about the show

Cuphead and Mugman reminded me of Mario and Luigi's characterization in _The Super Mario Show_ (player 1 is full of bravado and a bit of a jerk sometimes, while player 2 is more cowardly and sensitive)

Excellent review/analysis. I'm always happy to see someone give credit where it's due in terms of the show's animation quality. It's easily among the most visually impressive animated series on any streaming service right now, IMO. Between this and Arcane, Netflix Animation is really carving out a niche for high-quality animated videogame adaptations. I'm all for it.

Okay, okay. Disclaimer, I have never played the Cuphead game. Nor have I gotten the chance to sit down and actually watch the show yet. But from the clips I’ve seen, this looks like a really great and fun show to watch! Edit: I just binged the whole season, and I love this show!!

One of the criticisms I see is that people are mad about the "no plot" and I absolutely think that people have been spoiled on that.

But there is a plot... Cuphead and Mugman go on wacky adventures while there being an over arching plot of Cuphead owning the devil his soul.

I love it, and I'm happy with the direction it's taking! It's one of the best episodic (with a hint of continuity) shows I've watched in recent times. I don't mind that it isn't rubberhose because that style takes a pretty long time to get down, and animation already takes a while to finish! Everyone sounds like they're having a lot of fun recording the lines, and my favorite episode has to be the one featuring Ribby and Croaks! Those two are hilarious!

I think they replicated the style of rubberhose animation very perfectly. When I asked my siblings and mother what year they thought this was made in, they all said something from the 1900's and were absolutely shocked when I said it was made this year. Even I am fascinated by the animation the whole time I'm watching this show
