I don't think stepping down was Murdoch's decision, I think the Board at Fox pushed him out. Too many expensive lawsuits with potential to bankrupt Fox including the NYC Employee Pension Plan that own shares in the company.

A truly disgustingly vile beast. Billions weren't the objective, destruction was.
