While I completely understand that there is usually some level of disappointment once finding out how most (but surely not how all) tricks are accomplished after formerly being mentally stumped / unaware of the before figuring out or learning of how they were done, what surprises me is the level of disappointment that some people apparently feel when learning how many/most/all tricks are done to the extent where they end up then saying that the act that has said skilled and clever trick in it is “dumb” and/or “boring”. The manner in which a trick is framed within a routine is often as crucial as the trick itself and the level/type of performance that is given throughout the routine, so if the performance delivery and trick ‘framing’ are done very well (I.e. somewhat uniquely) then for me the unveiling of a semi-skilled to-skilled and ‘clever’ trick is not too disappointing. Even for some routines where the trick/s are basic and/or reveals within the routine, if the performance is good and entertaining enough then I will very much enjoy it (including the trick) regardless (I.e. Penn & Teller’s card and knife routine), or P&T’s version of the cups and balls where despite the trick being the moments of deception being obvious + explained within the routine the level of skill involved to pull it off how they do is still impressive). Of course I am talking of tricks that do require some level of skill (I.e. slight of hand) and/or are very clever in another way with regard to their deception about how the trick is achieved in major contrast to the effect/illusion of the routine (and yes I am including routines such as Penn & Tellers rat routine given that the slight of hand that produces the final cage effect is both clever and genuinely skilled even though the card trick itself is reasonably basic), but even with an ‘unskilled’ or ‘non-clever’ trick if the performance surrounding the trick is good enough then surely that deserves some appreciation.

The trap routine is rather boring if you know anything about traps. He is grabbing them from under the jaws, they will never I mean never got his hand
