Saying this as a scientist in healthcare (bachelor’s degree but my title is medical lab scientist) healthcare professionals that don’t go on to get doctorates many times don’t get a whole lot of education in evolution amongst other animals because they focus heavily on human biology, so they don’t really have a firm grasp on the full scale of evolution. Education in a field of science will not always include evolution among species, and many nurses often don’t get that kind of education as it is not relevant to their practice. My field was much more immersive into evolutionary biology so I got a firmer grasp of it during my education.

Many people are good at learning procedures without the need for critical thinking. Medical practice is about knowing and following procedures.

Black atheist here. I've always said I became an atheist around the age of 8 during catheism, because it made no sense and a nun lied to me, when I asked either one of two questions how do we know any of this is true or how do we know Jesus really lived. I knew she lied and she didn't believe any of it either and so that was it. But when I think about it, I was born Atheist and was never indoctrinated and simply made a decision that I didn't believe that day. Anyway, I don't believe my mom was religious in any way, but my dad was from a Catholic country and because my mother was ambivalent about religion she was willing to go along with what he wanted to do - which was basically for both of them to send me and my older brother to catechism and church - alone - and that was it. There was zero religious discussions in the house other than occasionally, later in life when we were poorer after my parents divorce, my mom would sometimes say she felt angels were looking out for her, but she never mentioned God or Jesus or anything. We lived with my grandparents, also non-religious. They were very moral and ethical people. My grandmother had some trauma in her life so she tended to be strict with us kids but my grandfather was just a lovely man. I learned how to be and I think I always innately was a good person with no desire to hurt others. I grew up around so many non-religious relatives that I was shocked to learn that a cousin actually belonged to a church. Her mom had passed away and she invited us to go to a repast at her church. Later on when my brother passed away, she called me obstensively to give me condolences, but actually offended me by telling me that if my brother hadn't accepted Jesus Christ in his life he was not in heaven. I still fume at that. I noticed on Facebook that her children often post religious platitudes. I'm assuming she became religious and then the her daughters and granddaughters were sucked into believing. Regarding Martin Luther King, I couldn't stand him. I remember when I was in 3rd grade I just couldn't stand him and the idea of praying while people brutalized you. Like the entire idea of getting on your knees and praying made zero sense to me. I have a little more respect for him now; but the religiosity of his movement, I guess, made it go down a lot better and he knew what he was doing as an activist. Anyway, I am APPALLED that black people, for the most part, embrace Christianity. I really have difficulty understanding why anyone would embrace a God that has been shaped into the image of people who hate them. I don't get it. I would much prefer that black people embrace science and math and evolution and facts. Religion is one way of just keeping people in ignorance, of manipulating them. It is a method in which the gullible can be made to believe anything. I'm 71 years old, female black, straight and it was only in the last decade that I actually sought atheist material. Mostly because it was during the Obama years that really brought to fore for me how hateful Christians are. As we've all become aware, it is not a religion anymore; it is a political statement and stance and a hateful one. If there was anything that turned me off from religion, and I've always been turned off from it, it is certainly Christians of today. We're out there but we're hard to find as atheist, unlike christians, do not go around declaring or unbelief. We don't knock on doors and we don't bring it up in casual conversation. So it's very hard to recognize us, and we, each other. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Karl Marx ....sorry for the error; I was in a hurry to get this quote to you, and I misspelled the last name of Karl Marx. I have questioned the tenets of the Bible since I was 17; I'm 72 now, and I realize that I, a 72 year old, male, black and straight, am atheist. I came to this moment through my studies of Ancient Egyptian (Kemetic) culture, cosmology/theology, religious/spiritual traditions and world history. When I saw the truth in the statement, "Religion drives culture.",shown to me through historical time-lines of culture from over 9,500 years ago, I knew that everything that I was taught about doctrines ,tenets, religion as a whole, was a bold-faced LIE. I can't blame my parents because they only knew what was passed down to them from their ankhestors, who, in turn, were indoctrinated, most times forcefully and brutally, by their slave masters. In our current culture, being atheist is tantamount to being anathematized by the Roman Catholic Church. Because our people are the most spiritual beings on earth, being atheist puts a double whammy on the situation. In spite of these threats to my ( and your) sanity and peace of mind, I choose atheism. To quote Jack Webb, from the television series Dragnet, "....just the facts,ma'am, just the facts.".

Regarding the milkshake, I am reminded of this quotation by the great Jell Biafra; "Give me convenience or give me death." Companies give us what we consumer's demand; "instant gratification." I am old now, and I believe we are an empire in decline. I expect it to get ugly. So far, I have had good luck. I implore my fellow citizens, endeavor to define and practice 'decency.' I place a premium on my peace of mind, so I do my best to act with integrity.

@@dagg310 , when I was still a believer, if someone had asked me why I didn't believe in other gods, I would have thought they were just being stupid but kept right on believing ☺️ If it's someone that's being genuine, I would start out by asking them WHY they believe, trying to get them to comprehend their belief is either an indoctrinated belief and/or one that exists bc of emotional reasons. Or at least get that idea into their head. And remind myself that it took me YEARS before I could accept that there really is nothing tangible to prove it. So who knows how long it will take them.

I've heard him on other shows and I know he's called in to Seth's show at least once before. He's from Canada? I never would have guessed that. When I deconstructed it took me years but I didn't have anyone to talk to about it or any call in shows. Part of me gets so annoyed with him always calling bc I think, hasn't he got it yet? Is he just being a troll? But another part wonders if he is also having trouble with his indoctrinated self accepting reality and that's why he keeps calling atheist shows and pestering the hosts with these questions.

What the hell is it with Okies and pancake syrup? Never have I seen anyone who spent more than a couple weeks in that state that doesn’t drown the pancake in syrup. I watch in utter fascination, unconsciously holding my breath, the stream of goo that seems to defy every law of conservation as it endlessly gloop, gloop, gloops out the bottle. Honestly it even surpasses that strange ritual of biscuits and gravy with every meal.

My husband uses more syrup on his waffles than anyone I know but he's actually from the Chicago area. I'm from Texas and prefer fruit sweetened, sugar free jelly on mine but that's bc I was raised by a mother who was really against sugar. But the biscuits and gravy thing? That just might be something people in the entire southern US do bc I totally get that. I have never met anyone from a southern state that didn't like them. ☺️ The only reason I don't order them every time I go out is either bc they aren't available or I'm feeling conscious about my health.

The part about giving unto Caesar what is Caesar's (Mark 12:17) was about people trying to use religion to get out of paying taxes. In response Jesus asked to see a coin, asked who's face was on it, then told them to give to Caesar what belonged to him. So all those anti-tax christians seemed to have missed that line

Referance the "gay/Atheist /Nurse... While in a hospital awaiting treatment for a heart attack, I was asked by a nurse if I would like to contact/speak to a member of the clergy... Made me laugh so loud that others thought that I was in a state of medical need! I told her that I am an Atheist! And that if I survive it will be because of the Physician who treats me, not some imaginary non-existent deity. She was totally taken aback with such a non-chalant attitude.

Also congratulations on getting into yoga. I used be a certified Bikram Yoga instructor and nationally ranked yoga asana champion but I got burnt out and now I’m terrified of returning.

He should listen to Oyalemi Olurin to learn about the ways our criminal justice system is literally rigged against our own people and pushes people Further and further into crime through marginalization and dehumanization.

I also think that we need to encourage more BIPOC into the community, women are slowly coming into the community but more needs to be done to ensure we are actively inclusive.

The thing that always gets me about the importance of religion in the black community is that it is the religion that had been forced on them they are a part of. Of course the slaves were likely forbidden from even talking about the religions of their heritage, so had no cultural memory of them, but once they were free was there any attempt to find a religion other than christianity?

Seth, have you seen Alex O'Conner's podcast with JP? It is on the JP podcast. It is really quite something. Alex pressed JP with poise and great calmness at times. Well - JP "suspects" that JC died and came out of his tomb a few days later but "has no idea what that means."There is more to it than that, but the whole episode needs watching. JP's jacket needs seeing. I will add a bit more in due course....about what I think JP does. It is still largely the same as Alex's own deconstruction of JP & Religion on his Alex O'Conner podcast.

Been a while since last I caught a Jawin' call-in (Jon, John, or maybe the J'onn J'onzz that attended Aeolis Mons Academy with me?). Always sounds like a member of the Smoove family. It's expensive, but when you no longer have a car, and the alternative is mass transit in the desert sun, Doordash is the best solution.

Tribalism remains a problem. Religion is tool to promote tribalism. Were it deemed illegal to lie in public (thereby ending a lot of political careers and most religion) we would still have tribalism. It would be harder to do anything with it.

... I stopped arguing with friends and family members years ago over Religion ... it's nothing to me what they believe or don't believe. I don't care much what the people HERE believe, either : I have zero interest in saving souls, collecting souls or whether or not we have souls. Believe whatever you like, and I will do the same ... I grew up knowing the adage, there are no atheists in foxholes. As I aged I thought about this in steps. First I saw it as evidence that God was real and revealed himself when things were the toughest. Then some TV show or movie set during wartime (it might have been M*A*S*H), had a character talk to the chaplain in relation to this question. During the battle, while he was in a foxhole with shells falling all around him, he swore to God that if he got out of this he'd become a priest. Then, after not dying, he struggled with his promise, because he no longer felt the calling to priesthood, but was concerned because he'd promised God, and didn't want to renege on the deal. The chaplain told him that God understood that people facing peril often make promises they can't keep, and wouldn't hold them to it. It was simply the faith they had in God that had caused God to intercede. But this same argument can be made for the atheist that professes faith in that same foxhole. Shouldn't God forgive him for going back to non-belief after the crisis had passed? This led me to realize that people turn to supernatural belief when facing chaos. When there is no rational answer that promises survival, it feels a little like drowning. Panic sets in, and you start flailing around looking for anything to grab. But if there is no God, than what is really getting the man through the crisis? It is the calming effect of his own imagination. Well, you don't need a God if you have imagination.

As an incurable MASH fan, this particular vignette, as you remember it, I don't think was from MASH, at least not that way. MASH did address atheism a couple times. Once there was injured soldier in the post-op ward who replied to a question from BJ with 'I'm an atheist'. BJ asked 'really?' and the soldier replied 'Swear to god...' Was a short and sweet throw away joke. There was one other plot that was similar to what you've described, but I'm having trouble remembering the details... Think it was between Klinger and Mulcahy... Sigh... My damned old guy memory is failing me. It'll come to me. I think.

@@tiltingwindmill I'm not sure it was MASH, but it wasn't dealing with atheism. It was a soldier who had promised to become a priest, but realized he couldn't follow through, and was worried about going back on his promise. The reason it stood out, is that it backhandedly refuted the "no atheist in a foxhole" trope. It did this by recognizing that people will say anything when in enough distress.

Seth this opening monologue is NOT it. Kind of like a nice guy version of a Rush Limbaugh screed. Your heart’s in the right place but your information is ideologically distorted. People steal things out of desperation. For many people the structure, the opportunities, and the necessary luck simply have not realized a path in their life where the chance to become their best self was ever possible. And it’s systemic. Individuals found guilty of petty crimes like sleeping in a vehicle, or Driving without a license incur steep fines which will result in police arrest warrants. Arrests cause people to lose their jobs and homes as no call no shows and missed rent payments are the inevitable sequelae of unplanned, 2 week long nonconsensual vacation to an 8’x14’ cement cubicle. After release modern data collection firms retain arrest records long after the citizen has done their time, paid all restitution and expunged their (official) record. This can lead future employers and landlords to discriminate against these individuals leading to being de facto locked out of participation in the formal economy. In fewer words: we make crime, with our barbaric Retributive justice practices which marginalize and disenfranchise those caught in the financially exploitative clutches of our for profit justice system until stealing the only valuable thing not bolted to the ground and praying to god they can find somewhere to resell it before their life comes crashing down again and they lose what little they have- seems like their only remaining option.

And she is boots on the ground fighting every day against the leviathan of white Christian hegemony. “Penitentiary” System. Comes from the same root word as “Repentance” Our nation’s extremist Christian tradition is suffused throughout our legal history. Ideas of atonement, and guilt are religious not evidence based. Another angle is the way prison parole boards place a heavy valuation on being “born again” for one’s eligibility for release and participation in christian indoctrination programs in the jails can in most jurisdictions result in days taken off ones sentence. If estimate about 75% of books available to inmates are religious in nature. Bookshelves are stocked full of bibles, Books of Mormon, The case For Christ, the Purpose driven life, and Heaven is For real. Inmates are starved for socialization and mental stimulation then church organizations come and offer these desperate individuals what will be their only opportunity to venture outside of their enclosed living area to visit a classroom or other areas of the campus… There is no place in America more suffused with exploitative Christian evangelism than in our jails and prisons.

The reason Atheists don't believe the gospel is not a cognitive problem, it is a spiritual one - “They are spiritually blind” (John 3:3). In other words, it isn't a rational decision they make, it is an emotional choice: they don't want God to exist.
