Draymond is the basketball equivalent of a middle linebacker. A LeBron James on defense if you will. He literally is the Mike that communicates, coordinates, and does everything on defense for a full 24-second shot clock. He has always been elite on D, and the most versatile defender for a while now (yes, even when people were saying he's washed when the Dubs weren't making any noise after KD left). His greatest value is as a team defender, coordinating his team while manning the gaps/holes every advantage the offense creates. He can play every position one-on-one, and is a good help defender too. Jack of all trades, master of none. Except he is the best short roll passer of all time. The ultimate role player, the best complimentary piece to milk Steph's and Klay's court-warping gravities. Off of a rebound, he rams the ball down your throat in transition like Magic Johnson, and he can also serve as your primary playmaking hub on te halfcourt. Truly a unique type of player.

That bit about his backwards jump when defending slashers is nuts, never noticed that before but it makes a ton of sense.

Since 2014, I have already highlighted Green as the smartest player I have seen. NBA is an offense centric crowd mostly. They see Curry change the way NBA game is played from an offense point of view. But people fail to realize that Green is starting to change the way defense is played too. Most coaches in the NBA right now are looking mostly for player in the same mold as Green.

With all the respect, i completely disagree with the idea that Draymond is neutral or just slightly positive on offense. When we're talking about Draymond Green, we need to think of him as a TEAM player. To me, he's almost the definition of make your teammates better, and that is so more valuable than what people ussually think. This team would not be the same (both on defense and offense) without dray. He set all the screens that the team needs, he always make the right play, he is an elite passer, among the very best of the league. I mean, he is not the point guard, he is not a scoring threath, he is not a great shooter, he is not the leader of his team's offense, he got almost 0 gravity, and still manage to be in the top 10 of assists per game this season. thats just INSANE, because all his assists comes exclusively from his IQ, his vision, his extremely quick reading of the opponents defense and of his teammates movements off the ball. Draymond Green its the only power forward on that top 10 list. You could bring Jokic or Lebron as big guys or non point guards who can pass too, but they are two franchise players, two primary offensive options in their teams, thats not the situation of Draymond. What im trying to say is that judging by the relation between the usage rate and the number of assists, Draymond Green its the best passer in the NBA. In summary, Draymond is a very special offensive player (due to his unique IQ and vision), and his impact on that end of the court is HUGE, not only for what he does, but (and especially) for what he enables his teammates to do.

Excellent breakdown of Draymond's defensives prowess & his affect on BOTH offense, defense & his ability to at times direct both the offense & defense! It would be an interesting breakdown of his effectiveness. It would be quite interesting if a chart was charted showing his impact on both ends of the court in a game.....

We are talking about NBA players and I believe NBA players can put on at least 10 points and 10 rebounds a game if you are a big guy easily if you have control of the ball in your hand all the time, you may lose games, but you can have a reasonable stat line. Draymond is the core of the warrior offence and defence, he can easily put on double-doubles all the time, but he does not care about his stats as long as they are winning.

His innate ability to read both sides is what makes him a player that people should respect. Thanks for the analysis, it would be interesting to hear why Kevin Looney I a fascinating Warrior, how he does things in that system the right way, etc. The Warriors don’t always have that glorified big, but their system makes it almost unnecessary. I’m not talking about their offense, I’m talking about accepting two points, while constantly challenging, and the switch heavy defense. How many top tier bigs stay in the 4th quarter against these guys? Why does that happen?
