I had a pet octopus that i found in a small puddle on a rocky beach. He was maybe 5 cm in size when i got him and have kept him for over a year in my aquarium. James (his name) was a very smart dude, he knew i went out every afternoon to catch crab for him because he would always be waiting in the front corner of the tank where i would drop the crab when i got back. He got rather big and i set him free when he was about 3 kilos. He liked to be handled and would hang out on my arm whenever i put it in the tank.

When I worked at a tropical fish warehouse the octopus was by far my favorite resident.

A while back I found an octopus in a rock pool as well. I remember just traversing the massive rocks that were apart of the beach area that met the sea and all of a sudden a huge splash occurred in what seemed like a fairly calm collection of rock pools. Then I noticed a floating fish head in the pool and right after I saw it, he was camouflaging against the rock about a metre away from me. I called my family over to have a look and he got spooked and slipped underneath the rock. My step father in an attempt to lure him out tried to use his sunglasses as bait and the octopus actually grabbed onto them and was having a tug of war with my step father. Despite the creature only being maybe the size of a dinner plate his suckers had a really firm grip on it. It was really interesting.

Thank you so much Jake! That means a lot :) The footage is from a number of sources, but the main ones (and most unique) are MBARI, EVNautilus and OceanX. These companies are at the forefront of deep sea research, sending down high-tech robots and ROVs to the otherworldly depths in pursuit of new discoveries! Working with their raw footage and being able to turn it into these films, presenting their findings and research, it’s such a fascinating thing and I love that people are engaging with it so much :)

One reason why cephalopods are frequently depicted in the media as monstrous and menacing is because of their tentacled appearance, even though real life cephalopods would be passive when encountered in the ocean.

🐙 are fairly docile but I've heard most squids are predatory like Humboldt or some squid in the sea of Cortez won't tear you apart but they will definitely try seeing if they can take you

I just went snorkeling in the Bahamas and saw two squids! They were just chillin! I swam close-ish to then (I wanted to give them their space) and it was super cool! They were just as curious about me as I was about them, truly fascinating creatures! 🦑

I feel like most animals are this way because being a monstrous, hyper aggressive animal would be a pretty bad survival strategy. Most animals run away from us or leave us alone, unless very specific situations where their survival is threatened. Except Moose. Moose are fucking diabolical xD

Whenever I see a giant squid I get chills down my spine. The fact that something that large exists is terrifying yet beautiful in a strange way. I do however wish you went more in depth about the lesser known cephalopods like cuttlefish and nautilus, those things are just so interesting and diverse and I’d love to see what you have to say about them!

Are nautilus really that interesting though? I have such deep love for & fascination with cephalopods I just can't get enough of them, but I've never really considered nautilus in the same category as octopus, cuttlefish and squid. They seem so primitive, so primordial, they really don't seem to have evolved to any level of complexity even approaching the other cephalopods. I could be wrong, that's just my impression of them, but to me they seem like the cephalopod equivalent of goldfish. I've loved aquarium fish since I was 10 years old, especially the genus/species with more complex behaviour, but goldfish are boring AF. They literally just swim around and eat whatever they can fit in their mouths. Do nautilus do much more than that?

I never comment on KZread videos but I need to this time. The quality on these videos is amazing. The combination of images, background music and narration is very well done. Sometimes the content or the length of the videos may not appeal to everyone or attract millions of views (yet) but the work done here is phenomenal and you deserve a lot of attention. Great work!

Man, this reminds me of why I wanted to be a marine biologist as a kid. Great production value on your videos, my dude! A small, but noticeable thing, is the appropriately-chosen music in these; the mysterious creatures have mysterious music backing their appearances, & it’s a subtle but meaningful thing that really reflects the feeling of living underwater...it’s such an alien concept, fascinating and frightening in equal measure to myself. Great work on your videos!

This is by far the most addicting KZread channel I’ve ever watched!……hands down.

Oh finally a cephalopods video!! Those are the absolute best marine invertebrates :D Best part was about cephalopod bioluminescence and gigantism, especially because those are the most poorly known, mysterious aspects when it comes to fossil squids. It's also brilliant that you're putting the music in the description :) This channel's gonna blow up, I can feel it.

I don't know why but I've always been interested in cephalopods in general and when I first saw the Magnapina Squid I just thought about how amazing and unique every deep sea creature is.

This is the 3rd video on this channel I've seen so far and the production quality and research is astounding! This kind of thing is something National Geographic would take 7 years to make and then only release to those that can afford it, but here you are knocking out mini segments for free!

Man, the oceans are still majestic and mysterious, and to think we still don't know so much about them and their residents. Great video :)

You should start a podcast or make some longer videos. This is so interesting and your voice is oddly calming

This was such a pleasure to watch, all the clips and all the editing was incredible! I never had a particular interest in the deep sea but I sure do now, instantly subscribed!

I want to thank you guys. There are not enough words to convey my gratitude for the videos you produce. I have a 4-year old and probable 'aspie' who devours them with such side eyed wonder. Our second home is the acquarium, but this is by far the next stop to scratch that itch. David Attenborough is a legend in his work, but the amount of detail and labelling you include makes you the ultimate in our eyes. She dreams of deep sea research and has a particular interest in cephalopods, tardigrade and other extremophiles, I believe they are called? Anyway, you're wonderfully curated images and information inspires and brings her endless joy, so thank you, thank you, thank you!

I wanted to be an Oceanographer for 10 YEARS lol it was my passion for the entirety of my childhood & my answer whenever anyone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew. What always blows my mind... is when you consider that; at every moment, of every day (including right this very second) there are creatures like this, as well as creatures of all different sizes, just...swimming, eating, fighting, mating, EXISTING in the pitch black world of the super deep ocean. They withstand pressures that would kill US in a nano-second if we were to suddenly be exposed to them, and temperatures just a hair above freezing.. So remember....; "Every moment, of every day. Including right this very second". :) Thanks for these videos NWF. This is a topic that I find truly fascinating.

Just watched this vid with pleasure. I subscribed right away. I'm a scuba diver so I've seen some crazy stuff on night dives. The thing that really struck me was that these amazing, wonderful, beautiful and on and on...only live for 5 years TOPS. That's a lot of stuff to figure out in just a few years. My husband, daughter and myself went to Mexico where the water is only knew high when the tide was out. My daughter found a cool shell that she hung onto for a keepsake. She had the shell in her hand (she was about 7 years old) and what crawls out...yep a really small and gorgeous octopus!!! It crawled out on her hand and let her hold it and watch it for a few minutes or so. What a perfect time to explain to her about octopus and how they were just SO cool.

Amazing creatures, great video, and wonderful voice. A pleasure to watch and to listen. Subscribed!

Well I believe with continual growth of the channel, I'm sure you can definitely find some people to become a part of this team. Make sure they're people who are just as passionate about it as you are and won't settled for less and continue to press on in the discovery of the unknown and even just more coverage on the known as well.

@@NaturalWorldFacts I am a high school student preparing for a knowledge competition known as ACADEC, and the next theme is water (which includes marine biology) if you wanted to know. anything about marine biology is helpful in my studies :)
