Hormones. Let me say it again for the haters in the back.. your body changes constantly, and your hair will also especially as you age and your hormones change. Example every women I know who got pregnant, had kids, had their hair change. One used to have straight up curly hair and after those hormones kicked in, her hair went almost straight, she had to start getting perms to achieve curls again. Hormones change everything as as we age.

Exactly, hormones! When I was a child I had frizzy but straight hair and there was no way to make it wavy or curly, even though my dad has 2 c wavy hair and my mum and my brother have 3 b curly hair. However, when I got my first period my hair started to get a very weak 2a wavy pattern. Fast forward to my first pregnancy and my hair turned into a 2b wavy hair. By the second pregnancy it became a 2b/2c wavy hair. Now that I'm back to my period and I'm in the process of stopping breastfeeding my hair has never been more beautiful with a 2 c / 3 a pattern. My crazy hormones journey 😂😂😂

Same thing happened to me. I had very curly hair all of my life. 2,5 years ago had a baby, and as time passed my curls started to become more and more straight. Now I have wavy hair and sometimes even straight. And that's all normal. We change, our body changes and our hair teksture changes.

My hair went super straight during pregnancy, and shiny. During that pregnancy the only thing I had to worry during that time was the fly aways. Location, weather, age, hormones, products, even evil eyes can change your hair. 😉 Every few years I have to relearn how to do my current hair. And now I know im not the only one.

Also want to add…any major biological change can impact your hair. I have a friend who got an autoimmune disease and her previously wavy/curly hair started growing in straight. When Mel posted this I was actually concerned she was going to say she was sick! So I am glad to hear that’s not the case.

I don't see a huge change in her hair TBH. I actually think it looks better and healthier. If there was any health issue going on would make it look much less healthy and likely thinner, change in texture and feel. That's what's happening to me. hairdressers are having a hard time doing my hair and it breaks easily if they use too much heat tools. Hard to not just shave it off.

This! Any endocrine/metabolic/hormonal/etc fluctuations (and women in general can have many) directly affect hair texture, skin, etc. My hair has changed drastically many times throughout my 65+ years, due to adrenal, thyroid, pregnanies & menopausal challenges. Yes, finally good to know everybody struggles with hair texture changes. I had straight hair as a kid, waves entered the scene in college, and after each of my four kids the hairs got curlier and curlier. I’m a legit curly with looser curl in the back, super tight in the front. But, I have had fifteen surgeries with anesthesia since 2011, and anesthesia can really mess with the body for many months, also I have hypothyroidism. And when having multiple surgeries a year, I’ve struggled a lot with my curl pattern, extreme hair loss and also a few good years in there. Really appreciate you and the wonderful teaching.

Dude, the surgeries. 😬 I have had many surgeries over the years without hair loss, but I had anesthesia three times last year (two surgeries) and I have lost nearly half of my hair since then! It probably doesn't help that I was on a higher level steroid around the time of the last surgery. I'm desperately trying to put the brakes on it with supplements.

Fifteen years later, my curls are gone and now have 2a/2b waves. I have no idea what happened. My hair is virgin again and very healthy, maybe too healthy, too soft. I don't heat sale. My hair changed in my 20s due to hypothyroidism. If you see pictures of me when I was younger, I had straight hair. It took a long time for me to accept my hair texture change and then find a stylist that knew what to do with my hair. Also, people who undergo chemotherapy and lose their hair have their hair grow back sometimes an entirely different color and texture! My dentist underwent chemotherapy and she had straight, dark blonde/light brown hair. Post-chemo, her hair was very curly and grew back almost black.

Mel! Thank you so much for making this video. I feel like, especially in women’s spaces. Nobody really talks about your curl pattern changing? Especially over the last almost 3 years where the pandemic has caused several people to have hair loss. Whether it’s due to the virus, or just stress in general. I’ve even heard of in some cases, the coronavirus causing peoples curl patterns to change completely. I think, for myself, I was such a shock when my hair started changing texture, because I just didn’t know that that’s what it’s like going into your 20s. The doctor says I’m healthy, but my hair definitely changed. I also like to tell people that even going on birth control can change your hair is texture and thickness. When I was on birth control for three months, my curls started getting dryer. My hair started growing faster! And when I got off of birth control, I started noticing increased shedding. So please make sure that everything is safe and secure.

That said: at 49 years of age, I’ve only just learned 5 days ago that my fine hair is not stubborn, instead it’s a 2b-2c and even some places 3a! WHAT? So, here I am, relearning how to my own hair. Congrats on website! Also, the color blonde in and of itself, is why hair would look different than when brown. I did the same thing in my early twenties; I died it blonde and color changes appearances. Even the braids I would put in my hair looked better than when my hair was brown because of contrast, etc! You are so not a phony! Thank you for everything! You are why I am "KZread certified" to cut hair now lol....and why my curls look great!

That's very true. In my case, when I was a little girl I used to have super straight hair, but then puberty hit and it changed in an extreme way... it started to get curly (although, at the beginning I thought it was frizz), and also, it got a bit darker and thicker. So, of course, hormones have a big impact on our hair. Btw, I love your videos Mell, you are incredible talking about these kind of curly hair topics, you are very sincere and we can always learn something new.

Yay! Congratulations on your website.💜 I've found that some loss of hair density (after meno and possibly extra shedding from Covid) did effect my curl pattern, at least in the way that my hair has lost weight and does not lay the way it use to and now seems to 'float' in certain areas. My hair also shrinks more in length than it did before when I air dry. You're so right about needing to change products!

I went from 1a hair for most of my life to 2c over a short period of hormonal changes. Quite a learning curve for me. Though my mum had such curly hair as a child she was called bubbles sadly her mum pulled it straight so she spent a life time thinking she just had very thick frizzy hair that took work. She was in her 60s before her sister told her about her childhood curls. My body is heading more towards her DNA I guess. 😊 If she’d had you around she would have been able to recognise and embrace them ! A bit sad really. Would love a video on what you no longer use and why. Congratulations on the subs and website. 🎉❤😊

Great video Mell. I think it’s important to help people understand why hair changes even if it’s just a visual change. Personally I think your hair is just as curly but like you pointed out because it’s healthier it clumps more and may not have quite the ‘volume’ or ‘grit’ it had before which changes its appearance. In this vid both sides looked as curly but you could see the salt spray had added slightly more texture and volume than the side without. I notice these days my curls sit much ‘heavier’ being uncoloured and healthy than when my hair was bleached and dry. I also think highlighted hair shows the curl more than dark hair. Either way I think you are still a curly haired goddess and your hair looks super shiny and healthy and luxe ❤

Wow, you're dealing great with your hair changing, it took me years to get my curls as curly and as healthy as they are now, I think it would be so painful seeing my curls get looser, like it is with my grays, I've got my first gray at 21, now I'm 27 and I have a ton of grays, on dark hair, it's very frustrating. The worst thing is that I found my first gray soon after getting rid of bleach, when I started taking good care of my hair and decided I'm not gonna bleach it again, the irony 😂 if you're still reading, congrats on your website! ❤️

  • @WynneL

As a newbie here, I really think your current look is astonishingly gorgeous; way nicer than the bleach look. I always think a person's natural hair color is the most beautiful on them (unless it's something wild that suits the person, like green or cherry red or rainbow or multi-pastel). Bleach kinda projects "I'm young and experimenting" or "I want to fit in" while natural hair colors project "I'm comfortable in who I am" and wild colors say "I'm just having fun with my life." I had my bleach phase too, but it felt wrong. I got the family "start greying in your 20s" gene, so now I rock my natural black with crazy deep blue demi-permanent streaks and I *LOVE* it. So much happier and more confident like this than being "on-trend."

I totally agree with what you said about natural color! I used to hate my hair color (dark blonde/light brown) cause it looked so dull. Had my phase where I bleached it once and instantly regretted it. Now that I’m back to natural, I’ve realized that taking care of the health of my hair has made the color so much better looking! Deep conditioning regularly brings out the natural shine and I love it!

My hair is wavy and fine (2A-B with some 3A curls) and it gets much wavier when bleached. I always assumed it was because my fine hair didn't have as much grip, so the curl groups didn't stay together easily, but when the cuticle is roughed up a bit, I have more friction to keep my waves from falling. So I ironically used salt sprays and other products that contain magnesium sulfate, but I thought it was mimicking the grit, rather than actually chemistry!

Thank you, Mel, for bringing this up. It’s tough to see your hair change with age and hormones. I experienced hair loss due to weigh loss and hormone changes as well as aging. It all started after I turned 26 and changed my eating habits. I lost hair, my curls loosened and my hair thinned a lot. It was such a mental blow. 4 years later and I’m still dealing with the changes. I wear my hair shorter now to enhance volume and had to switch my stylers to cater to my finer and low density hair. Thank you for putting this topic in the spotlight, I went through this changes feeling completely alone and it was hard. Congratulations on hitting 700k!!!!

I’ve been on two different birth control pills in my life, and one of them gave me a title curl pattern and cross our hair! Second? Gave me a final curl pattern and looser hair. I’ve even heard of some women who go on the implant and they have extreme amounts of hair loss.

My hair was curlier when going through puberty, then it calmed down quite a bit. When I got pregnant, it was at its curliest, but after my last pregnancy I had to have a hysterectomy and now it’s wavy. A friend of mine was on the opposite side of things. Her hair was barely wavy to begin with and after she went through chemo and her hair grew back, it grew in completely curly.
