The Undying Martyr - 40K Theories

Who was the seemingly immortal man who turned the Angels Resplendent into the Angels Penitent?
And yes it’s meant to be “Catheric” instead of Catholic as that’s how it’s named in the Horus Heresy novels

Yes I messed up with "Judaeo-Christian cross". I messed that up with Abrahamic xD This video will be updated in future, as a few people have pointed out that there are ties to the novel "Fire Caste" which I completely missed.
Torso wound, and the phrase: "Do I still dream?". It's a psychic manifestation of the Emperor. The appearance is how the Emperor sees himself. The religious aspect is a side effect of the worship of the Emperor and the power he derives from it.

@Roboute Guilliman I mean the rebelling favorite son against his all powerful father is pretty on the nose with satan fall from heaven. Ya know ?
I feel that the quote "do I still dream" has some significant meaning to this equation. What was he dreaming, who was he in this "dream"? Also, why was the battle-cry changed to "The emperor condemns"? I feel the theory of him being a fragment of the Emperor is highly possible, being unable to recall exactly who he is, having fragmented memories of times like The Unification War and the Great Crusade, as well as other times of glory and a hopeful future, hence the feeling of a dream-like state of what he feels must have been pure fantasy. As for the Battle-Cry becoming "The Emperor Condemns", this in my mind could be two things, one being extreme fanaticism of the already radical imperial cult, furthering the worship of the Emperor as a god-like being, or it could be eluding to the fact that the Emperor was against everything his Imperium has become, and condemns the current Imperium for straying away from the Imperial Truth and the Emperors teachings of old.

Red Lion DAMNED HERETIC!!! Knowledge???? KNOWLEDGE?!?!? This ones chaotic taint will destroy us all!
First of all, if the Martyr *was* a Shard of the Emperor (or a Shard inflicting a normal Man), it would also explain his Wounds, as they seem to mimic the Wounds, the Emperor received from Horus. But I also have another, while lazy, Idea: The Martyr was a Creation of Tezeentch. It depends on, how good the Angels Resplendent were at detecting a demonic Influence, but if it was a Human who was somehow influenced by the Chaos God to have these Wounds (for example being wounded by Cultists) while being kept alive by Tzeentch's Power and then being send straight to the Fortress Monastery of the Angels Resplendent, to make them believe, he was some kind of Martyr of the Emperor, it would explain the religious fanaticism that turned the Chapter into the Angels Penitent. Think about it...the Emperor himself was absolutely against Religion, yet the Martyr turned the Chapter into Fanatics. We know by now, that the Religious Aspects of the Imperium are one of the main Things hurting it. Yet another Astartes Chapter - one of the main military Powers in the Imperium - being turned into a highly religious Cult hurts the Imperium more, than it helps. Also think about, that only the Librarians - *Psykers* - were not affected by it and were conveniently slain by their former Brothers.
@russellelswick7238
5 жыл бұрын
but was the emperor really that anti-religion? you know, with creating his own cult of personality, allowing other cults to exist (ie ad mech), making his warriors appear as angels, and setting himself up as the God-Emperor of mankind? I mean really, the dude is a psychic and lived millennia to see thousands of religions and enigmatic leaders rise and fall but didn't have the clairvoyance to see the Ecclesiasty or the Imperial Creed coming? I don't buy that. Dude was just trying to consolidate his power, and probably knew that if humanity didn't worship him en mass there would be no real hope for them in the warp. And the religious aspect of the Imperium is one of the few things saving it. The combined faith and sacrifices of billions is what gives humans an afterlife in the warp, brings about powerful manifestations like the Living Saints, and helps keep the warp at bay.

To those who want to know more about the Angels Resplendent before they are all "Codemn everything" they are the focus of the book The Reverie by Peter Fehervari which just came out this last October. Will make you rethink any and all of your guesses to who the Martyr is.
The undying martyr does not need to be perpetual, to live through seemingly mortal wound. Possibilities: 1) a ruse from Alpha legion to instigate the civil war inside the chapter. Legion witouth librians is much less capable to fight chaos, and psykers of xenos, or traitorus armies. And if the Alpha legion was capable to disguise THEIR personnel as the fallen enemies to infiltrate the enemy army DURING BATTLE, it may be possible, that they know how to make the victim to survive griveous wound, or how to make the would look much more severe, than it is. And than use either trained operative, or unknowing imperial citizen with hypnotic orders. 2) Blessings of chaos can lead into such extreme fortitude, but i can not belive, chaos would bless such a zealot. Maybe "for fun", or as a part of some elaborate plan to fuck the chapter and consequently their part of the galaxy by some strong chaos entity (tzeench anyone? ) 3) sensei (much bigger chance to BE a perpetual). Being a ofspring of the emperor, to share physical apperance with him. 4) imperial saint reincarnating either VERY late after his demise, or in different part of the galaxy, than where he was wounded. 5) some yet unknown perpetual. 6) xenos, heretic, mutant, or other enemy of imperium in a clever disguise, to split (and eventually thin) the chapter residing there.
Could possibly be a fragment of emps? maybe his lost compassion? Does anyone else get the feeling that the Inquisitio wants to kill he Sensei because they actually don't want big E to come back? talk about hit hitting the fan, emps is going to be PISSED when he finds out about the Inquisition and what they've been doing.

If you want to know who the Undying Martyr is, the answer is on the "Dark Coil" series.
If he's a Perpetual, he could easily be (another) previously heard of one. If he's a fragment of the Emperor it opens up a lot of possibilities. I don't know what the truth is. Thank you for highlighting this part of the lore which I'd missed!
What happened to the Martyr after the civil war ?
So, A weird Jesus?
What if the undying martyr is just sly marbo
My theory for why Imperious would be an avatar of the emperor is that after being interred in the golden throne the emperor needed more power to fight off the chaos gods and form things like living saints and the legion of the damned. With renewed understanding of the warp the emperor commanded those who he led to worship, discovering that the warp manifests belief and emotion. In essence every human in the entirety of the Empire worshiping the emperor and not just thinking but believing him to be a god causes him to gain power. Manifestly similar to orcish Waaagh! which itself I believe to be a form of warp energy engineered into them by their progenitors.
"Do i still dream" seems like something one might say after waking up or leaving a strange place or realm. Because of that Im inclined to think that the undying martyr was an ecclesiarch whose soul bonded with one of the emperors fragments within the warp as he died which the fragment then used to anchor itself to the materium
Been wanting to know more about these guys. Wanted to run these guys on the tabletop since I like their paint scheme.
Could it be possible that this Martyr guy is the proto-Primarch, Angel? An entity so devout that The Emperor had to take him down, and so tough that even Emps couldn't finish the job. Plus, when taken down, Emps told Angel to "Dream of Peace". Just a though.
He's not the Undying Martyr, he's a very naughty boy!
Just a note, Vulkan's mind wasnt damaged by his reincarnation, it was damaged by Conrad Curze's torture.
That sure sounds a lot like Jesus
**Spoilers for Fire Caste and the Dark Coil series below** The Undying Martyr is Confessor Yosiv Gurdjief from Fire Caste. Just before he "dies" in that novel he suffers wounds exactly as described on the Undying Martyr. The description of both characters in terms of physical traits, emotional state and twisted, horrific fanaticism are exactly the same, as is the credos that both of them preach: The Revelation of Lethe, i.e. that "The Emperor Condemns." Gurdjief is a fantastic and interesting character. A man who lost himself in a Warp-twisted jungle, making an infinite, decades-long pilgrimage alongside a T'au warrior so broken by his ordeals he describes himself as belonging to the caste of "smoke". The twisting and writhing fate he inflicted on his superiors, and later his lover, and the beauty he saw in her corrupted, screaming form. In terms of how he got to the fortress monastery, that's for readers of the Dark Coil 40k series to understand. For twisted and barbed is the path that Gurdjief and the Angels Penitent walk, and nothing is chance...

Right there in the passage, it's "glamour." Glamour being one of the powers ascribed to Fae creatures in old European superstition; it basically causes faeries and things associated with them to not appear as they are to people viewing them. An ugly, gaunt little horror might appear as a fair maiden to a man until they touch, the glamour is dissolved, and the man is transported to another realm to whatever malevolent ends they captured him for. A pile of gold in the middle of a forest could turn out to be a heap of filth that is only revealed to you when you get back to town having risked your life a number of times hauling it. He might or might not even be generating the image consciously, too; it could just be inherent to him now that mankind all "believes" in him as the Emperor.
when you started describing a man covered in wounds that caused a chapter to go insane over time, my first thought was "ohhhh shit this is Nurgle' isn't it" so i'm surprised to be wrong!
This is so interesting. Id like to know more about the empiror's children.
Worth noting is that the Librarians, the only psykers of the chapter, didn't like the Martyr. So what did they sense in him?

I think CHAOS! Particularly the one with feathers because he would get a kick out of watching a chapter of the Emperor’s finest tear it’s self apart this way and we know that he has tried to turn both the Blood Angels and the Blood Drinkers specifically, it would seem the Changer of Ways is looking for away to get the Sons of Sanguinius to his cause, of course the Blood God is another possibility as this chapter went from having the lowest rate of Black Rage to either just below or just above the Flesh Tearers, more like the latter as I don’t think even Seth Gabriel’s troops lose Scout Marines to the Black Rage!

To be honest, the sensei part of the theory seems more plausible, due to the fact “The final perpetual was discovered” but one part bothers me about the sensei part, why would the sensei go to the Astartes, because the Sensei wander throughout the galaxy. In contrast to the servants of the Emperor, but the Sensei are natural rebels. They appear across the Imperium to fight against repression and injustice. In this way, they often come into conflict with the Imperium. So why seek refuge with Astartes?? It is still a possibility.

"That's a question to be answered another time" and by another time he means never.
"There can be only one" - Highlander
What if the Undying Martyr is not a perpetual at all, but is instead a Nurgle agent. The many diseases and ability to display unnatural vigor even in the face of near mortal wounds are a trait that worshippers of Nurgle share, and while such trickery is normally not Nurgle's way, the fact that the presence of this Martyr threw a Space Marine chapter into civil war is a Chaotic thing. Also note that the entire Librarium stood against the Chaplains in this. Perhaps they could sense the warp taint on the Martyr while the psychically ungifted Chaplains were blinded by the guile of the Martyr.
Wait, what's the music in the video? That sounds familiar. Is that a Space Marine OST? Anyway, I really enjoyed that change :)
hey the music is brutally awesome, can you give us a link to it?
Heh, it appears they now keep the Nikea Decree since the Librarians and Librarius condemned by the Emperor for all his loyal Space Marines are now gone. So they no longer fall under the decree of anathema by the Emperor naming them to be enemies of the Emperor. Definitely evidence that the Undying Martyr has a clear connection to the Emperor.
My theory is that Lorgar's sachems and warp-rituals combined with the billions of worshipers are slowly corrupting/converting shards of The Emperor's mind into embracing true godhood against his better judgment.

the Martyr could be an agent of Chaos. As the Angels Resplendent didn't suffer from the Black Rage and Red Thirst as mush as other Blood Angels Chapters and as a result, for several thousand years they fielded little-to-no Death Company. But after they became the Angels Penitents they have suffered from the Black Rage and Red Thirst a lot. I can even point at who send (or even made) the Martyr... Erebus... if the other Blood Angels Chapters would have learned from the Angels Resplendent they could also have ended becoming more free from the two curses and Erebus was the master mind of the Signus Prime trap. If most of the Blood Angels Chapters became free from the curses it would have been a slap to Erebus' face and something his enemies could use to show him as weak... last thing I have to say is that Erebus has made a Perpetual before in the from of Cyrene Valantion when he resurrected her.
You forgot 1 option: it is that grey knight guy, but he regenerated as his original human form. Who said perpetuals would revive as they were upon death?
See, from the description, I thought Nurgle might be involved
One question I've had for a while is, if the Emperor is a perpetual, how is it he's so messed up? Did Horus' powers ruin his healing factor somehow, or did he use the Anathame sword?
@MisterBones2910
6 жыл бұрын
A lot of people theorize that the throne itself is keeping him in that state. If they just unplugged him maybe he'd begin regenerating, (before or after he dies, who knows) but that would cause the webway to open up and let the demons into Terra.
Maybe just a servant of nurgle who was sent to divide the chapter and successfully did so?
If the Emperor is a perpetual then why he did not recover from his wounds after ten thousend years?

A canonical case of EXTRA HERESY. Commisar Fuklaw and many inquisitors will have a field day; As for the future of the chapter I predict the sudden appearance of Waaagh of Orks snipers in the sector around Kanvolis.
Could he not also perhaps be a daemon (admittedly, it'd have to be immensely powerful to withstand Chaplains for 19 days), which was able to sway the chaplains for some kind of long-term goal? It could be that the librarians were the only ones used to withstanding this sort of influence, and hence the civil war in the chapter begins. I don't pretend to know if there's any evidence to support it, but I'm always suspicious of anyone claiming to be a prophet or to speak the Emperor's will.
I like to believe the angel resplendent still exist out there as the angles resplendent proper the first and there chapter master waging an unending crusade much like the black templars are constantly on one crusade or another.
I think it could be a fragment of the emperors soul that has been empowered by faith.
After hearing the description of the emperor I can’t help but ask if he dominated the minds of ppl around him

I also wonder if he was doing so deliberately or he he couldn't help that manifestation of his physic power - the man underneath sounds as if he was far more humble and had much better taste than the golden giant we know.
Papa Nurgle obviously loves him. Henh henh henh henh
IT WAS THE PROTOTYPE PRIMARCH "THE ANGEL" found in the inquistor book.
I smell chaos trickery
If resurrection can create a Perpetual then wouldn't that mean that Robute Guiliman is a Perpetual? Or was he not technically dead while in stasis?
Wait, wasn't Vulcan 'played with' by Konrad Curze to the point where Vulcan's mind permanently broke?
He's Penitent Confessor Yosiv Gurdjief from Peter Fehervari's Fire Caste. If you actually read that book you'd know it.
What about it being a nurgle worshipper who is trying a more elaborate ruse?
I think the novel The emperor of mankind makes me think that what corvus seen wasn't the true form of the emperor. Because the Pariahs are the only ones that the emperor cant fool with psychic illusions. I think she described him in his armor and therefore being huge :/
It could be a true Perpetual that we still don't know about. Hey, if Scott Cawthon could have done that with Purple Guy in FNAF, why would GW not do something like that here too? Alternatively, it could be a person containing a shard not of the Emperor Himself, but of the Warp entity called the Emperor that might have been created as the result of the worship of the physical Emperor.
