The Underground Shelter Boom | SoCal Connected | KCET

Catastrophic events, pandemics, and fears of the end of the world have prompted buyers to invest in "underground shelters."
In this 2012 "SoCal Connected" piece, reporter Vince Gonzales uncovers the sudden boom in shelter sales across the country.
Ron Hubbard, founder of Montebello-based Atlas Survival Shelters, is on a mission to provide customers with protective and durable shelters that are often housed 20 feet underground on private property.
The shelters provide all of the amenities a normal house would provide, including bunk rooms, a large living room, food storage areas, and water tanks.
Thinking of purchasing an underground shelter in the event of a catastrophic event? That'll cost you anywhere from $35,000 to $150,000.

If I didn't have to convince my wife, I'd do it too. If I had lots of money, it would be a fun trick to have a luxurious underground mansion concealed under a cheap looking little bungalow in an inexpensive neighborhood.

These ones a lot of people can afford. There is of course underground bunkers that cost millions of dollars which the average person can't afford. I think it is worth getting one of these ones. I would still bargain with the guy to get the price down though since it is only corrugated pipe.

I grew up in Missouri during the Cold War. A lot of homes actually had stocked bomb shelters in their basements. While the adults did whatever they did, the kids played in the shelters. Having lived in several active tornado states and going through several if I had my own house and property I'd at least have tornado shelter.

If it's a nuke, $150K is not going to help if nothing else is left around you, near hit and you are gone too. For a hurricane/tornado, $150K is a little step don't you think? Ever see a concrete well housing? That's all you need.

+M7Caravan In order for people to want to go into the shelter during a storm, it needs to be comfortable. Otherwise people tend to wait until it is too late. Making it comfortable is going to add a lot to the price.

I personally don't want a small cramped tornado shelter. If they could make an above ground storm shelter like this I would be happy. The only concern I have for underground shelters is if it is flood proof. I am in an area that can have a lot of rain and a tornado at the same time.

Just wait for that power grid to go off frequency just 1 Hz and you have absolute chaos and a restart process that can take months. What could cause that? Well look at Texas, look at the sun, look at the stars and ground beneath you. Civilization is a semi-fault tolerant house of cards, and civilization as we know it has been around less than 200 years. In 1900 you could go back to the farm, you can't go back to that today. Imo it's going to be the things that everyone thinks is completely innocuous that's really going to cause the disaster, and one such thing is just a powder keg, slowly rising, lumbering on the now inevitable path.

Watching during Covid Era, civil unrest situations lol, however, this shelter i snot as useful. Still need a garden for food, people are unemployed and cant afford it, people don't own land to support this, and is 20 feet below good enough for any modern bomb, not likely but who knows. I like the idea of using culverts in some hobbit style homes but not for anything more than thermal barrier to reduce heating and cooling cost and maybe against a hurricane or tornado.

Wow, this is the most ignorant comment I've ever seen on KZread. It doesn't matter where you live you moron, radioactive particles are spread all throughout the Earth. Once enough nuclear bombs are detonated, everybody on the surface of the Earth, depending on the level of exposure, will die a slow and painful death within 2 days to 2 weeks because of Acute Radiation Syndrome. Tf do you mean "buy a home in a different country"?, how the hell would you even know what countries are going to war?, and why would you think I want to move to a different country just to be safe from a war that MIGHT happen? Why are you making clairvoyant statements like "after the war is over"?, are you a psychic or something?, World War III would in all probability be the end of the world. Also, you're referring to war as "a time of tension"?, this isn't two children getting upset over who gets the last slice of pizza, this is NUCLEAR OBLITERATION OF ENTIRE NATIONS. "you will have something valuable with you" What?, are you referring to the money?, if so, how? pieces of paper are in no way valuable during an apocalypse other than to burn on a campfire.
