@@pedropierre9594 That's not the reason, they picked one back at 2nd edition to make the baseline for all chapters, it could've been anyone of the original legions and after that, due to them being the space marine chapter that gets bought the most, then you have the business ideal combo, there is demand for a product why change any of it if it sells? that's the smurfs, but it could've been any other chapter. But due to this, they suffer not just a justified hate, but lore and story wise they also suffer due to GW pushing them into everything and everywhere at the same time for the setting of the universe.

Their divergent successor chapters only prove their adaptability due to location and experience. If anything the reason why the iron snakes have a broken down structure is due to them recognising their responsibility of guarding the reef stars logistically and tactically.

A very good point. One of my favorite fan theories is that the Ultramarines and Imperial Fists "weirdo" chapters are actually all marines descended from the two lost legions that were integrated into the legion during the later half of the great crusade.

The ultramarines are also really the only chapter that does everything a space marine is supposed to do. They are, by DESIGN, in and out of lore, the example that others have to measure against. Everyone else has a particular focus and/ or weakness drawing away from the space marine core.

9:17 as a Salamander simp I just want everyone to have a seat at the table, Space Marine 1 is one of my favorite games basically ever, Captain Titus is a grade A++ badass, Matt Ward hasn't worked at GW for YEARs now and yeah, Ultra depression is pretty damn funny, I got no problem with Rowboats boys

I heard that during the early days of G-man was reunited with his legion, his momma was also busy making sure the space marine are cleaning their barracks, armors etc etc

At the end of the day, guilliman is a bureaucrat. A competent one, and that is what makes him incredibly dangerous.

As you can see, GW stays hard on the Greco-Roman themes of the Ultramarines and I'm all for it tbh. Hate when writers abandon a characterisation for no reason over time and I enjoy that each legion has it's own flavour.

@@psychopunk8817 that and their names and some of the iconography on their armour (e.g. laurel wreaths) it is more technically correct to call them Greco-Roman themed. Their themes are implemented in a similar fashion to most other chapters/legions, small details that when combined change the flavour of the chapter/legion giving them a distinct feel that is separate from the others. Some are not so subtle *cough* Space Wolves *cough*

The reason I like the Ultramarines and Guillimon so much is because they were one of the few factions that truly understood what it took to build and maintain an empire.

I don’t hate the ultramarines, but I don’t like them for 2 reasons. 1: most often they’re kinda bland in their aesthetic. I wish they’d go full throttle into the space Rome look like that Mersaror guy. It’d help them to stand out a bit more. 2: they don’t leave any screentime for any of the cooler, more specialized legions, and the only ones that do get screentime are the blood angels and space wolves.

Love how in the novel that introduced him, "The Piercing Thrust", Fornicus, with his great Thunderhamner, defeated an Eldar Wraithlord so hard that, after it was dragged off of the battlefield once the Imperials pulled out, the Bonesinger trying to repair it lamented it will take centuries until she can walk again. I also love how the author managed to make the Wraithlord an entertaining character, as she starts the novel as this arrogant, kinda spiteful woman (like you expect Eldar to be), but, over time, ends it respecting the Hammerfuckers as worthy opponents after Malleus gave her a thorough hammering.

i feel like a loyalist emperors children would have much in common to the ultramarines, their objective to be perfect at everything would probably leave them at a symilar spot to the ultrtamarines, quite good at most things, maybe with the ocasional outlier thats the best of the best at one thing or two

I loved the Theoretical and Practical bits from the Ultramarines. Making a formal tradition out of giving your plans and intentions a thorough reality check. Then, when all of the intellectual work is done, wading into battle with dual power fists, punching heads off and caving chests in.

It has to be said that Mr. Bones came into 40k after Know No Fear. It can not be said enough that Abnett personally reworked and redeemed the Ultras and Bobby in that book. I remember the times before that. I remember the Fall of Damnos where the Necrons handed the Ultras a defeat. It was pretty well written and everybody seemed to like it. But having the Ultra's lose was something GWS could not allow, so the Ultra's went back and defeated an awakened necron tombworld, because screw you that's why. Remember that whole joke of Calgar killing necron's with a AA-battery? That is something that happend in that book. So when Abnett came along and wrote Know No Fear where the Ultra's lost massive amounts of troops in the betrayal at Calth, that was something worth reading.

I don't care what you say, theres losing and there's being a failure of a so called revered faction of a chapter being known for being the greatest. That's the problem I have with the black legion and possibly the iron hands. I just don't like long string loser heroes in my fiction

To me it always feels like the Ultramarines claim military to be everything the first legion actually was. And Roboute pretty much shows his jealousy when he meets the Lion in HH. Biggest difference being DA don't give a fuck about perception, Ultras are all about statemenship. The whole Codex Astartes is nothing more than Roboute's vanity project forced down the throat of everybody, while the DA actually definited the basis for SM-warefare in every regard, by doing everything first and paying the blood price.

The ultramarines are what got me into warhammer over 15 years ago, and they are still my favorite chapter. Ive come to love other chapters as well. But the boys in blue will always be my favorite.

When I first got into Warhammer in 2020, the fist mini I painted was an assault intersessor as an Ultramarine due to lack of knowledge of other legions and only having the starter paint set. I didn’t realize at the time how much people loved to hate on them. It kind of made me double down on loving them.

I think the chapter that can compete ultramarines in terms of common sense and logistics are the raven gaurd successors, raptors.

Salamanders are my favorite, but I do love me the Ultramarines, I have a fondness for generalists in gaming and stories.

This is why i am subbed to you. You take the piss on all those fans that look at 40k through memes and make them fuming when you defend something that anyone without a cool head and grounded look cant understand.

Since (so far) I'm only a hobbyist, and since I'm still very inexperienced with the hobby, ultramarines are my main army since what got me into warhammer in the first place was my local games shop, which let people play video games for like 10$ an hour hence why my parents brought young me there in the first place, got a giant cutout of an ultramarine when 8th edition came out which was on display right in front of the small staircase right as you walked in. seeing this gigantic space marine that looked both futuristic yet ancient at the same time for like two years is what made me a fan. getting my first "start painting" set made me realize that this hobby was for me, and when looking into the lore further I did genuinely like what the ultramarines were all about. learning about the fandom's general attitude towards ultras did make me a bit sad at first since I was new, but now I don''t care anymore, and I've even come to like the "their Primarch's name is Rodent Guillotine" memes. plus, it does help that I'm a basic bitch who almost always likes the default options the most, or at least a slightly cooler looking version of the default option (hell my character in dark souls 3 is almost always just some normal knight looking bitch, and in Doom Eternal I almost always use the the default slayer suit.)

Love it! HH Know No Fear is my favourite book. I’m a Flesh Tearer by nature, but I do love the boys in blue. If I had more patience, I’d play them.

I like them. 40k at its best is a story about raging against the dying of the light if you ask me. (Rylanor's last stand anyone?) And most of the Ultramarine stories I have read are a lot like that. Hell thats what Ultramar kind of is. As you mentioned characters like Ventrus have virtues they stand for even in a setting where everything seems to keep getting worse. Duty seems to be the word of the day for them. Besides there a realistic depiction of what you would want a super soldier to be like. Above good at war they seem to be just good citizens.

@@sanguinius3938 Guilliman was placed in stasis for 10,000 years after being stabbed by Fulgrim’s poisoned blade, which would have killed him otherwise. Belisarius Cawl and Yvraine worked together to fit Guilliman with his armor at the time of the 13th Black Crusade. This helped bring Guilliman out of stasis, since the armor functions as something of a life-support system to keep Fulgrim’s venom at bay.

I have struggled with which chapter to paint for 13 years. I started with ultramarines, then crimson fists, then black templars, then aurora chapter, then blood ravens, then blood angels. I should've just kept my ultramarines. I think I'll go back to them, thanks to you.

I really do like the idea of warriors who are dominant because of logistics. Such an enormous part of war that fiction seems intent on ignoring for the most part. If the 20 legions were real, it would likely be the one which focused on stuff like logistics who end up as a powerhouse.

I still want to flay them alive but I like them a little.

The ultrasmurfs gets shit done

They are about equal to me, with the Blood Angels. Just a big, flat meh. Though slightly below, because they are the poster boys. They are the ham and cheese sandwich of the setting. No mayo, just ham and cheese. I actually find a lot of their successor chapters more interesting. Mostly because they either zig where regular Ultramarines zag... Or just straight up eat people.

I’ll admit that the Ultramarines are probably one of the most competent chapters in the setting because few other people know how logistics work. HOWEVER, they aren’t my favorite because they feel just a bit too…milk toast to me. Plus they suffer from the “Posterboy effect” in my eyes, where through being the main face of the setting, the faction/character in question becomes over represented and just feel less interesting to those who dig deeper. If I were to pick a loyalist legion to be my favorite, it’d probably be the Imperial Fists because the paint job and tactics are closer my preferences rather than anything else.

I like the story they have going behind the dudes with the red helmets but that's about all I can think of in terms of things that feel creative about them barring pappa G himself of course who is still cool.

I am very much enjoying your content. Your humor has me chuckling and i dont get most of the jokes yet as I am new to 40k. Was thinking of starting with Orks simply because they look fun, and there doesnt appear to be a limit to them dieing off. As you said in your orks video they arent an invasion so much as an infestation.

it should be mentioned that Guilliman had something that none of the other primarchs did, he had a mom! that's why he's the most well adjusted of all of them

i would say the Ultramarines biggest plus is the flexibility of troops and administration. when a problem comes up the Ultramarines are almost certain to lose when you use a specialty fighting style against them but the second fight you will only just get away with your life and for the third not even the god emperor himself can save you. they are the quickest to learn from mistakes of all the legions/chapters. when they have a foot in the door for all aspects of war its not hard to open it further depending on the situation.

they also are basically just auxilliary troops for the Ultramarines. like they take from Genesis Chapter constantly to refill supplies. I can just imagine a going away party for each one while the Ultramarines are staring at their watches waiting to take their new unit into a necessary battle!

this is exactly why i love the ultramarines.. they are soldiers... thats it, and thats why i like them. they struggle DEEPLY with the morals of combat and especially the normal humans, like their own auxila and guard in general.. they dont let it bother them as much as sallys but they are in general just normal people brought up to be demi gods and that is EXACTLY why i like them... third Co. gang wya? gang gang

They really sell the idea of being a "Space Marine" to me. Idk why they just really seem like they are great for that role.

I also don't understand what's so funny about his name but I nonetheless enjoy the fact that he is basically the Beanibag Cabbagepatch of 40k

It's just kinda long and tricky to say and spell, so it's easy to misspell or pronounce, so people just tend to intentionally misspell/say it wrong for the meme of it.

I like Ultramarines the most, because they're the only legion / chapter that is actual, coherent military unit, not wet dream of 14yo metalhead.

i was there when the matt ward warded all over the lore and it was not a nice time :( kinda hard to shake that off i have to admit - dark imperium books were fun though, Girlyman is very likable

I love Ultramarines, it isn't a popular stance from the perspective of many Xenos mains since the represent the poster boys of the Space Marines... Which themselves are the poster boys of 40k as a whole. But they are rational beacons of sanity in an irrational and insane universe.

When I got into the hobby for the first time, I didn't quite connect the dots that the Ultramarines were the poster boy. Dark Angles were getting heavy representation on the box art, Crimson Fists were on the cover of Codex: Space Marines, Black Templars on the rulebook. I just liked blue. And years of character development ensued :/

One of my favorite Ultramarines moments is in Dark Imperium when Calgar takes the 1st Company to handle a minor rebellion on Macragge. He does this because yes it’s overkill and that’s the point, to send a message that any attempt to subvert Macragge will be met with overwhelming violence. What isn’t well reflected about them on the tabletop is that Guilliman trained them to be good citizens first and warriors second and they deal with problems through a lense of diplomacy and sending a message instead of “raaaah kill them all”. Calgar even makes a point to capture and spare the youths who rebelled because they only have good intentions at heart. If you want to get a good idea of who the Ultramarines and Guilliman really are I’d highly recommend Dark Imperium and the way Ultramar is governed there.

There is an Ultramar gas station near me, it takes all of my willpower to not add a second head to their golden eagle logo and the white "not omega" on the sign. Also now I kinda want to make up an army of UM successors called the "Hammer Fuckers"

The problem is not that they are the poster boys. The problem is that everything you described is true. They are the most balanced chapter and as a result are the most perfect chapter. And that's the problem. They are too perfect. It's boring. I don't hate them. But I think they are even more boring than the imperial fists. At least the fists have SOMETHING that they are good at that differentiates then from other chapters. Christ, the black templars are a fists chapter and are probably one of the most flawed chapters out there. Ultramarines are fine it's just Im more interested in literally every other chapter.

“Can bench 3 plates” oh god, Arthurs a Dyel… a space marine could easily press that 1 handed my guy.. they’d be pressing in the thousands, especially in armor?? Good lord. We already got normal people with slings benching over a thousand and raw at almost 800

To me the fact that the Ultramarines are so great make sense because they practice tactics and make sure to have a diverse skill set. Logistics and administration are what make empires, and I would prefer to have a smart but simple chapter tether than a grimderp chapter like the flesh tearers who by all account should have been censured or fallen to khorne. The one thing that I can see people having an issue with is the codex, which tbf it’s over 10,000 years old at this point and probably shouldn’t be as revered by the smurfs considering the ultramarines are known for adapting rather than being extremely dogmatic, but it’s still a pretty good tactical book. Sure the codex limiting space marines to 1000 marines may seem a bit short sighted but after the Horus Heresy the idea of having legions still around was seen absolutely stupid and rightfully so considering the destruction caused by the traitors. The Matt ward era is gone guys. It’s time to recognize that the ultrasmirfs are pretty decent. Also, aiI am a hundreds percent sure that half the ultramarine haters haven’t even read a single bit of their books or lore.

Just got into WH40k with the Recruit Edition. Will now paint my Space Marines as ultramarines.

As someone who remembers the Ultras from 2nd edition and even collected them it's weird to seem them go through cycles of being the most "normal" and being the "super, best, mega" marines. Uriel Ventris is a Bro though. I'm still a loyal son of The Lion though.

I didn't think much of the Ultramarines until i read 'know no fear' and now i love them

What made me turn my opinion to liking the Smurfs is through their primarch. Was two things about him. First being his upbringing and how much of a momma’s boy he is. The second being how he feels he failed in parts of his life. He felt he had failed to save his father, to save Big E, and he feels he failed the people of the empire.

The thing is, that the Ultramarine nature as being noble knights and efficient legionaries, makes them in my eyes very appealing. Also their noble and shiny aesthetic is something that I like as well. And they are bood boys. Not as kind as Salamanders, but still good.

I heard a rumor that Matt Ward was originally writing what was going to become an Ultramarine codex, and the project later got changed to being the generic Space Marine codex when it was nearly complete. And thus began both the wanking of, and the hating of our lovable smurfs.

This channel is an anomaly. It is composed of almost everything I dislike. But I somehow can't get enough! Maybe it's because you sound like you're having fun? I dunno what it is, but you make me want more. Even if I already know almost everything.

This reminds me that I need more blue paint.
