The Ultimate Weather Balloon Guide to Sending Anything to Near-Space

Curious about what exactly we used to do this: We have it all in the blog here: www.untamedscience.com/blog/go...
We sent 5 GoPros to space, and it was awesome! Well, technically it was near-space (The most common definition of space is that it starts 328,083 feet above the surface of the Earth. It did sound cooler to say it was going to space though). I think we reached 80,000' in the end when the balloon burst. That's still pretty high!
The goal of this video is to walk you through the complete step-by-step process to launch your own payload to space via a weather balloon.
Because it's WAY too long to put out in detail here, we made a blog about it: www.untamedscience.com/blog/go... Go there for all the exact details and ways to buy all the products to do it yourself.
If you want 52 Things to start on right now to improve your filmmaking and photography - we have videos on them all here: www.untamedscience.com/blog/52...

Thank You a lot , Amazing Video ! Me and my friends are going to do this soon and i just wanted to know how long does it take for payload to go up there and then to fall back down on Earth ? Because we dont have a big budget and we are not sure if our cameras battery will last long enough ...

It's probably about 45 minutes total to go up and down. It's not long, but cameras drain quickly on cold days and at altitude it's very cold.

If you want to go still higher, attach your payload, parachute, and your balloon all together onto a strong plastic ring, (like a hula hoop) then partially inflate a second balloon and connect that to the ring, also. When the "main" balloon bursts, the second balloon will then continue to lift your payload MUCH higher, until the second balloon bursts. Make sure there's enough lead-line on the first balloon, so when it falls, it will hang below your payload and any cameras, out of the way.

"Very cool views of the earth's curvature." The curvature is extremely exaggerated by the camera lens. Only when the horizon passes through the center of the image will the curvature be close accurate. The curvature is there, (and yes, the Earth is round) but a fish eye lens doesn't do a good job of capturing it. "Great work as always and thanks for sharing." I completely agree!

I have done this a couple of times, and you really missed a trick. Because the habhub site mentioned for the predictor and burst calculator can also track the balloon if you end up using ham radio (tracker.habhub.org/). That way you are not dependent on the SPOT tracker, and you also get real time tracking data from many hams tracking your balloon. You can have live images transmitted as well (ssdv.habhub.org). You can chase the balloon in real time, which is fun! there is a mailing list and an IRC channel for asking questions and getting help with issues. One of my video's kzread.info/dash/bejne/f3qixLmyZc6sebg.html And yes, we did find out you need more batteries on the GoPro ;)

Great Video! I was wandering about weight of your'e payload and the balloons lift availability. I'm going to send a balloon myself and when I checked 300 or 350g balloons they are rated to lift 250g cargo. Jugging by the number of you're gopros the payload you send was way above 240 grams. Can you tell me how you made it ? What was the weight of you're payload weight (including the parachute) ? Did you used more helium?

Is there a need to get approval from the FAA for a flight plan? And. You mentioned a 4 lb payload limit, is that universal or, does it depend on the size of the balloon?

  • @baldwinchen6744

More helium = lower burst altitude. Heavier payload requires more helium. You want enough helium so that is ascends fairly quickly (you don't want it to take 4hrs or more) but not so much it bursts low. Look up nozzle lift and burst calculator.

I think you should launch about 4 weather balloons attached to 20 ft diameter carbon fiber ring. Attached below would be a platform. On the platform would be a small & light but very powerful rocket. Once the weather balloons reached their maximum height, you could launch the rocket with a camera in the nose of it, & also place another small camera on the platform to record the whole rise to maximum altitude & the launch of the rocket.

You should have launched a picture of your hands and send that into space so if aliens find it they know who has the most beautiful hands on planet earth.

You can and it will technically make it go faster and if you're country's law allows it you can add more weight but helium is a safer option cause it doesn't blow up and these ballons can sometimes be uncertain so yes but at ur own risk

So if I throw a candy wrapper out the window of my car I'll get a $500 fine for littering, but weather balloon operators can Chuck massive amounts of debris all over the planet without any repercussion. Nice.

So, I know this is a frickin boring thing to say, and everyone is sick of hearing from.... certain people (I can't remember what they are called, something like ... Bat Flerfers?)... but now this video means that if someone, with a certain belief about the shape of .. something, wanted to do an experiment to confirm that belief about *that something*, they can. And then post it on youtube, for the world to see. Get to it, Hat Surfers! I think that's right ... :|

  • @bobbyswidarski363

It's about as good as your weight and cubic feet of helium estimates are. We burst at 79k ft and I think the burst calc. said 86k ft, but we had to guess a little on the final helium fill. We put more in than we used for the calc lowering the burst altitude.

Yes. Check with the FAA. If you've done it right you won't be subject to regulation and won't need a waiver or anything. It is a good idea to issue a NOTAM, which will notify you nearby airport of your activity. www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/CFR-2004-title14-vol2/xml/CFR-2004-title14-vol2-part101.xml
