For me, it's either the couch that slides forward into a bed or the drop-down ceiling bed. No way I'm dismantling & assembling stuff daily. Thanks for putting this compilation of bed ideas together. Cheers..

Same here, haha. Way too stressful. You're very welcome! :)
Thank you for the video. Some fantastic designs... I agree with lots of points here. Personally it feels like the more you RV, a descent kitchen and a toilet/shower could be acceptable by the most people as long as it is functional and feels well done. On the other hand the three elements: 1-Bed, 2-Sitting/living/dining space 3-Storage space varies by needs, by a lot. Factors such as being a full-timer(s) vs. occasional RVer, or being a single, couple, with kids, pets... being active with lots of gear, people who can get homesick quick(nothing wrong with it!) and prefers "homey" feeling. Or the ones who demand; "I need a proper, office like space, while drinking my coffee and sitting down with my book/laptop pretty much every morning!" types, etc... To people who are going into RVing, I suggest them to monitor their moods during morning and right before the bed hours. These are the moments when we are the most tired or energized in general. Our demands peak and we're not as flexible with ourselves during those times. Another point is Rving is being flexible by itself. You just have to. Basically, it's a moving-living space that is limited by the road lane width… Anyways, enjoy the view out there!

Very wise words! Yeah, you really need to know yourself and not what you wish you would do or think you would do when RVing. True! It's all so individual.. Thank you! :)
Amaaaazing! this is my kind of nerdery :) Thank you. I can see how unhappy I would be to reach any stage of exhaustion and not have a bed already set up. Or 2 in the afternoon, loafing in a national park, and looking to lie down for a 1 hour nap aaaaand... setting up a bed for the privilege. Ewwww. Even more than that, I can't imagine waking up on a cold morning, poorly slept, and having to executive function my way into putting my bed away before having a place to sit and work. It's fixed for me! Thank you so much for this comprehensive review.

Haha, glad you liked it! Yeah, totally agree! You are definitely more likely to stay sane with a fixed one.. :)
Another bed option not mentioned is two twin beds (or two sofas during the day) with a walkway in between, leading to a rear bathroom, like in one of the Travado models. (The kitchen sits right behind the driver seat.) We chose the basic fixed bed for three reasons -- 1. the massive garage underneath in which we can fit a double inflatable kayak, two bikes, chairs, outside table, etc.; 2. we prefer not to make and unmake the bed each day; and 3. with a separate sofa & table area up front, it works better when one of us goes to bed early or sleeps in later. Thanks for the video.

Oh right, I didn"t see that one yet, thanks! But yeah, if you got the space in the vehicle for other "hang out areas" and want lots of storage, a fixed bed is the way to go! :)

This was great coverage of a very important topic. Thank you!
Thank you lisa for such an AWESOME summary of so many possible bed options! I have also been watching VAN videos for the past two years for inspiration :D. I want to convert a small van (5.4m in length), and came up with an idea of how I want to do the bed to maximise space. And I always felt it was weird that I had not seen anyone actually build the bed that way in any of the hundreds videos I've watched :D. And suddenly here it is! The nr 3 on your list. So nice to see it actually being built and so nice you had linked to the original video so that I could even get even more inspiration on how to actually build it. Kudos!

If the mattress is a also the seat cushions, I can imagine just sitting on the bed with a table that is over it a few inches. That saves the hassle of taking it apart and stowing the linens. Also, am loving the idea of a bed that drops down from the ceiling! Could have a platform below it to hang out on when bed is raised. Great video!

Great video. Really makes you think what is best for me. Thank you.
Excellent content, awesome. Thank you.
Thanks fo this compilation works a lot!
Thank you so much for your video, and especially for explaining your philosophy and the pyramid of needs. I believe that probably the majority of people who build vans have a similar philosophy to yours. My philosophy is different and the most important difference that never occurred to me before is that most people are planning to sell their van after they use it to camp in for a little while. This probably influences their thought process about what the pyramid of needs should even be. I'm not planning to do that, because I'm thinking after putting together the components of my van I want to keep them and move them from van to van because I plan to keep the van until it's very worn out and then get another one, or maybe just continuing to use the majority of the stuff in my home if I decide I don't want a van anymore. Selling it all might be a good idea, except... after all the work of getting the van put together in the first place it seems like such a shame to just sell it, although some people do sell them for a lot. But even if you don't build it, just FINDING the stuff in the first place is a big job, and businesses constantly go in and out of business, or stop making some of their products, so there's a good chance you won't be able to find it again. You did such extensive research. I think I'm looking in the wrong place for ideas and I'm going to stop looking at van builds. I think that what I really want is more like a daybed or a very cushy ottoman/couch type of piece of furniture, possibly paired with a sleeping bag. I have also thought about something that is kind of like a coffin. I think my ideas may be highly unusual though, because I just don't see anyone else with anything close to that. Although I think it would be nice, if more people had a philosophy closer to mine....
@lisasomewhere88
Жыл бұрын
So interesting to hear about your bed idea! Yeah, there really are no limits - it's all up to your imagination. I guess looking in big second hand furniture stores or so might help you, too for inspiration. But I agree about the selling of the van. That really is the plan for many people. I personally know that I never don't want to have a camper van of some sort again, so we won't be planning to sell ours at all. And right - if the van breaks down, just take it out and continue in a different one. :) I hope you will create the bed/build of your dreams though!

Fantastic!
The ultimate van bed is obviously a pop-top so long as your not camping along a freeway or in extreme weather conditions mainly really hot weather. See ModVans examples.
I have another lift idea that I think should work - Why do we want to have a bed blocking our head space while awake, why not instead have a couch "blocking" our head space while we are sleeping so we don't need it anyway. In other words, not the bed moves down, but the platform with couch moves up... revealing a bed under it.This would be less cramped during the day because even if the resulting head clearance may be more or less the same, the ceiling is clean and you don't see the bed at all.

The guy that's exhausted at 15:05 and needs a nap really needs a nap now.
I think im going to go for a more japanese style layout, meaning, doing alot of things on the floor so that I can utilize as much of the floor space as possible for whatever might arise. Maybe a Japanese style dinner table with cushions around it for the chairs. Then the table can do something foldy and modular somewhere when not in need or use. I also need a desk area to make mysic and edit video. And room to stretch and what not too. Thinking I'll have alot of very narrow furniture that won't impede the main space much st all for things like the kitchenette and storage. Hidden luggage loo with a hidden fridge near the front maybe? And if I ever actually need the van to transport anything large ish, I can also use it for that. Keep it as useful in as many different ways as possible. Multi functionally modular and whatnot lol.

I have hated our van build since we built it with a friend who was set on the design. The fixed bed going all the way from the back doors and about 6 inches into the middle door has always driven me crazy. I am very likely going to tear it out and redo it combining a couple of these (yours and one or two others) to make our 144 sprinter be much more comfortable to live in for two of us and a dog. Thank you for comparing all of these. I definitely agree with your rating scale! Thank you!
@lisasomewhere88

Oh no.. yeah that just eats up lots of space... especially in a short sprinter for 2.5 peeps. Glad you got some ideas from this! :) Good luck on the bed remodel!
Very comprehensive video, but you glossed over the twin bed design like in the Travato 59K. This has some distinct advantages. Like single travelers can keep one side made up as a dedicated bed and the other side as a sitting area. Or being able to have a comfortable mattress without any seams (even couples if they're willing to sleep separately).

You're right - it is super practical! But everyone is a bit different there. I personally would feel weird to sleep separately. But for single travellers it's definitely great!

I building a fixed horizontal bed for the max storage underneath. Two Mtb’s Two oversized, off-road spare tires for the van. A hitch mounted winch for front or rear of van that stores inside with all associated recovery gear. Plus two large drawers in the center that open into the living space.

Hi, great content! But next time, could you avoid using all the cut offs and dings, it makes it jerky without continuity. I kept fast forwarding to get thru it to hit highlights because it was too difficult to watch.
Are not all beds horizontal? From a vertical bed you would fall out... I would call them sleep across and sleep alongside. But what do I know. I am not native english speaker...
@lisasomewhere88
Жыл бұрын
Haha that is a good point! I guess it depends on how you look at it (I was looking at it from above when the van is vertical). Across and alongside would probably have been easier to understand, but I"m not a native speaker as well.

Vertical is ground to sky. Horizontal is like the horizon. I see you are not native speaker. But all beds are horizontal. :)
Why have I never seen the fixed horizontal bed with a garage underneath but in the front of the van ? I'm thinking about that because I want to install a bike rack underneath the bed and my bikes are too long for the width of the bed. What am I missing here ? I've been searching for a couple of days and I couldn't find anyone that did this layout there must be a reason...

Mmh, a garage under the bed but in the front of the van? That would be hard to get to and the sliding door would be just to open the garage it seems like - or do I understand your idea wrong here?

Hehe, well yes in normal terms it doesn't exist, but in terms of a van build planning I was looking at it like at a layout, birds eye view :)

That's a good point, I think in the UK more people prefer your set up, as far as I've seen. The other argument would be that when you mainly use the sliding door to get in and out, you're immediately in the bedroom, so opening the door to a kitchen feels less intimate. That's how I feel about it. But I get your point!

"Sleep horizontally?" How does one sleep vertically? 🤷♂️
@lisasomewhere88
Ай бұрын
That's in terms of the vans direction, seen from a planning perspective. vertically meaning along the long side of the vehicle. :)
After watching many, many build videos I think my personal favorite so far has been the one used by RP in their Rebellion 4x4. It gives plenty of room to sleep, it's not claustrophobic at all, it allows either person to leave the bed without crawling over the other, it provides a decent dinette option, you could leave the bed permanently set up if desired, it provides good access to the roof, and it accommodates a large garage beneath. The only catch is that they've used the super high roof option for the Sprinter, which isn't widely available. But if I ever get the opportunity to do my own build I'm almost certain to follow that basic layout. kzread.info/dash/bejne/eniJ07N_fL2peqw.html

I've seen one video where someone actually sleeps on the floor of the van after making a "pallet." I have yet to see someone use a self-inflating mattress or a foldout cot with a sleeping bag. I suppose that is too simple and a camping van idea and everyone seems to want a tiny house on wheels, and call it "camping."

@@lisasomewhere88 well, I tend to think of camping as more bushcraft oriented, and "roughing it." I think of things like burning the dried contents of a composting toilet in a campfire, and having that toilet by the side door instead of having the sink there.
