    I wish you'd cover the least well known fact about tanking. Whenever you go tank you expect that the healer will always be there to help you. But instead all healers are the most deranged and uncontrollable loons you can find on the web. They use rescue like how a bad dog owner uses a leash. They will berate and hate your very being. I've never once felt secure tanking around a healer in FF14. -A healer main.

    Always make sure to have at least one damage mitigation ready. Damage mitigations also include: Disabling your tank stance and shirking aggro onto a healer. They can heal themselves. Avoiding tank busters. Those hurt, and you don't wanna die. Disconnecting and shutting down your game. You can't be killed if you're not there.

    When pulling mobs, provoke has a longer range than your ranged attack. So if you use provoke first you can grab the mob’s attention sooner than just ranged attack. I main dark knight when I tank so when i pull the first mob i’ll use provoke on the closest enemy, then plunge to a different enemy, and since it is a ogcd I can do unleash as soon as I land. Since I initiated with provoke the mobs are already starting to group together

    @@StingcatKnight it even worked really well for warrior when overpower was a frontal cone aoe instead of circular aoe. You could provoke one, tomahawk another, run through the mob and as long as you had it that the character would face the enemy on an attack you could use overpower and cleave the whole mob in that cone and keep on going. FFXIV was only my 2nd mmo I ever played and the first time I ever tanked like this. I had bad tanxiety at first so I didn’t tank at first much at all. I started playing during 2.45 and leveled all my melee dps and caster dps to max level 60 once heavensward was released before I tried tanking. Once I found this trick it was so much easier.

    @@timalice-2833 I liked the old frontal cone AoE on Warrior, I found it really easy to use. And it helped tanks avoid picking up the bad habit of standing in the middle of a circle of mobs and AoEing as mentioned in the video. I still kind of pretend Warrior has a frontal cone as I run through and it works more or less :)

    Some other things to keep in mind regarding mitigation and how to spread it out: if your healer is a white mage, then there's a good chance that they're going to be spamming holy a lot on trash, which will stun mobs for a total of ~7s, this means that you may want to hold off on using your mitigation for a bit at the start of each pull or you'll waste a portion of your mitigation. This is particularly important regarding Arm's Length, since enemies only get the Slow debuff if they attack you within 6s of using it, making it possible to completely waste it while enemies are stunned by holy. Also, keep in mind that your own stun will basically be useless when you have a white mage, as their holy spam will make all of the mobs immune to stun after those initial ~7s. This isn't exactly "bad" as stunning the entire pack of mobs for the first ~7s is fantastic, but you still want to be aware that your own stun isn't going to work. Another thing regarding mitigation in dungeons: don't be afraid to use your mitigation on trash/regular mobs. In fact, that's where you want to use them. You don't really need to worry about saving mitigation for dungeon bosses, they just don't hit particularly hard, and if you do need any mitigation during them your short cd mitigation (sheltron, raw intuition, etc) is more than enough. Trash packs on the other hand will actually do more damage do you than bosses, especially if pulling wall to wall. That's where you'll get the most out of your mitigation, and where you'll make the difference in your healers' eyes.

    Arm's Length slow debuff is so underrated among sprouts. Basically an enemy auto-attacks you 5 times, but in same timeframe with slow debuff, they'll auto-attack you 4 times instead. Thats one less attack not taking damage from all those mobs affected by it. Really adds up stopping damage.

  • @phiefer3

    @phiefer3

    10 ай бұрын

    While Arm's Length is very useful as an additional mitigation tool in dungeons, it's a little misleading to call it one of the best mitigation skills. As noted, the slow will effectively prevent 20% of attacks from mobs, this makes is essentially equal to Rampart. However, Rampart works on all damage you take, while Arm's Length will only work on enemies physically attacking you, enemy casters will not get slowed. Additionally, while the slow effect lasts about the same length as Rampart, there is only a 6s window where that slow effect is applied, so if an enemy doesn't physically attack you during that time then it will avoid the slow (this could be because it was still chasing from a previous pull and didn't get to you in time, or maybe it's an enemy that stops attacking to use some attack, or the enemy was stunned by Holy or some other attack etc). And lastly, Arm's Length is a 2m cd while Rampart is only 90s. It's definitely useful, and too often forgotten; but it's actually one of the weaker mitigation tools in our kits.

    @@StingcatKnight The math is right there. Slowing enemy attacks by 20% means you get attacked 20% fewer times. Getting hit 4 times when you would have gotten hit 5 times is a 20% reduction. 4x1000=5x800. And yes, enemies that don't physically strike you definitely do not get slowed by Arm's Length. Most regular enemies in dungeons do physically attack you, but not all, and those ones will be unaffected by it. Arm's Length is, at best, Rampart with a longer cooldown. And in some cases depending on which specific mobs you use it on or other situations it will do less than Rampart.

    and if you tank, dont go into a duty, lets say a lvl 41 dungeon and only wear lvl 25 gear.... and pull wall to wall, you WILL die and it WILL be your fault. Another tip: range dps and SMN can steal agro from you as you pull, to help this, do both aoe combo and then continue, sadly most dps dont hug tank after they steal agro, so do it to avoid drama, unless you like drama? low lvl dungeons, sure u can do massiv pulls, but only the tank has aoe, no one else till lvl 24 i think (around there) but it is kinda fun to do thou mobs dont really die much faster or duty gets shorter at all.

    As a RDM main that has had the "fortune" of vertanking quite a bit because of these... Trust your healers, especially if your in an 8 or 24 man raid. Also be aware of your surroundings I've had many tanks get knocked off ledges because they were not paying attention to where they were in the arena. If you are an OT make sure to pick up adds while the MT is on the boss. Also while OT keep an eye on everyone's health, sometimes DPS will pull off the MT if they are focusing in down one target and not weaving in AOE's to keep agro up, or in cases of multiple bosses in alliance raids the other tank dies... this is where I end up vertanking most of the time or the other boss starts to nom on tasty healer treats. Great guide btw.

Also I tend to spam ogcds to make sure they go through, so I would end up spamming "Invuln up invuln up invuln up" in the chat with a load of noises which would annoy ppl. I think a much better way of handling this is to just type in the chat "I have invuln up this pull" so the healer knows while you are on your way to pull it.

    1. If you're gonna wall to wall, commit to it. Don't sit there hit 4 GCDs before deciding you want more. 1 GCD and an oGCD, is pretty much all that's needed while throwing ranged attacks. 2 GCD max. 2. Don't run to straight to the wall once you've gathered the packs, just plant yourself at the second pack. 3. Those grey, and green circles on the ground are NIN, and SMN dots. Don't drag the mobs out of them. 4. This really shouldn't have to be said considering how big they are now, but stay in your healers bubbles. I just had a tank run out of Asylum doing #2. 5. PROVOKE when you die. No DPS appreciates tanking the floor after eating a tankbuster because they're getting smacked for 30 seconds after the tank has been revived.

    When pulling packs of mobs, as soon as you provoke or use your ranged attack, you can hit an off-gcd like Arm's Length immediately to have extra initial hate before the mobs are actually in range of your melee attacks. This helps offset the hate from any heals or attacks from ranged DPS in that split second before you're in range to hit the mobs with your own attacks.

  • @davidlynch9469

    @davidlynch9469

    Absolutely do not burn one of your strongest mit tools to gain hate during a pull where you will take little to no damage especially if you hit sprint before the pull. Do use an ogcd aoe skill and then your range attack to establish hate. I.e. if you a paladin sprint gap close in use aoe then circle of scorn and the second part of aoe continue your sprint to next group. While sprinting use your magic to intacast on any mob the may need a little refresh of the hate meter or use your shield lob. Then at the end of pull use you arms length for the MIT benefits. Every tank job has a combo like this to burst build hate and keep it without much worry of dps stripping it away even if the dps is going nuts and you arrive with them trash half dead. If a dps wants to range attack before you have even engaged the mobs then the dps can use there self sustains and mits to bring the mob to you. All dps have some type of mits, second wind and blood for heals and if they don't have mits and heals they get massive shields like manaward or carby shield it not worth loosing a MIT that basically reduces damage by 17% for 15 second. Arms length is 70% stronger than reprisal and last 50% longer don't waste it for stupid dps pulling before you even land an aoe attack.

    If you play on PS5 with a controller, I recommend doing your AOE combo on the first pack before racing to the second pack, because if you missed anything from the first pack with your AOE, it's harder to tab through and isolate it to grab hate on PS5 than on PC. On PS5, it's not just a matter of clicking a mob on your hate list. I play on PS5 and do it this way, because in a large pack, if there's a stray and it's off somewhere attacking a healer or ranged DPS, targeting it is more time consuming and time wasting than just making sure you hit the first pack with the two strike combo before you move on. It would be one thing if the other players would consistently bring their stray over to the tank so I can grab hate. But they never do. So I just pause for a second, get the other skill off, then move on to the second part of the pull. Also, while Arm's Length doesn't hit bosses with Slow, it can be used to mitigate knockback mechanics on bosses.

    I play on controller myself, and I used to do the aoe combo to grab the first pack but some dps are idiots and use their buffs + all their burst on the first pack and end up grabbing the aggro anyway. So I got into the habbit of doing ranged gcd > switch target > provoke > switch target > ranged gcd while running past them which can grab 3 mobs within a couple of seconds, means you do not have to stop to do aoe so you can keep up the pace, and actually does more aggro than an aoe combo since ranged gcd's have the additional effect of increased aggro and provoke also does a lot of aggro + it stops ur dps being idiots because they can't do aoe as much if the mobs are moving. It also lets your party know you want to keep going

    @@AaronWOfficial Provoke just puts you immediately at the top of the hate list for that mob and a small boost. It matches whomever is at the top for that one mob, and adds +1. If you're already at the top of the hate list for that mob, for instance if you generated aggro from using Shield Lob and an entire pack has you at the top of their hate list, then following that with Provoke on a mob that already has you at the top of their hate list does nothing. It's good to use if you want to pull from a greater range than Shield Lob/Tomahawk, or for pulling hate off someone who shouldn't have it. But if that mob is already attacking you it does nothing.

    If you have stance on, provoke generates additional aggro. It never used to do that back in stormblood but they changed it in shadowbringers. The additional aggro it gives is more or less the equivalent to a shield lob\tomahawk\unmend etc. I know this for a fact, because you used to have to shirk after other tank provokes for a tank swap in raid\trial content but you don't have to do that anymore because of the boost you get from having stance on. If you have stance off, provoke works the same way it always did (+1 above top of table). Basically as long as stance is on, it acts as an ogcd ranged aggro equivalent to a gcd, never lost aggro to a trash pack since I started doing this.
