    I have the original DATS and it’s still in use daily. Mine was a simple dongle with test leads. Excellent and most certainly essential piece of kit. It has its faults though such as not having an option for testing an inductors value at industry standard 1khz. You simply read iff the impedance value at your chosen crossover point and calculate inductance. T&s testing can be hit and miss, especially using added mass method. All things considered it’s essential if designing speakers and crossover networks as files can be exported into cad packages to combine impedance and frequency response to derive filter designs.

    An important thing to look out for when doing the t/s measurement is the smoothness of the impedance peak around resonance. If it's not smooth, something nearby might be affecting the driver, which results in not only the impedance curve being affected, but also the measured t/s parameters may turn out to be inaccurate. To avoid this happening with woofers. I usually just hold them out (if I can!) at arm's length when doing the measurement.

    I've supported the driver with magnet resting on a piece of PVC pipe and pipe made to not to block a driver's vent or introduce a pip resonance back through the vent. That takes a bit of balancing but reduces acoustic and air reflections which could modify results in the case of lower mass drivers.,

    Just a quick note, inductors don't burn up power when in a typical crossover. Resistance is increased in HF signals, so the signal is more likely to go to another source, such as a tweeter and not lost as heat. You know, path of least resistance.

  • @DIYAudioGuy

    @DIYAudioGuy

    Right, the resistance is a function of the frequency, that's how they work.

  • @ReferenceFidelityComponents

    Also, every drive unit made uses voice coils which all have a rising impedance with frequency so have an equivalent inductance. Passive crossovers lose very small amounts of power in inductor dcr and esr of caps as well as through heat loss in resistors but in general, it’s not why active is “better”. That is more down to output impedance of an ideal voltage source driving a speaker being zero ohms. It never is but in passive networks the dcr of the BASS inductor which handles most current (lowest impedance as it’s at lowest frequency) is ADDITIVE to output impedance of driving amplifier and since the only thing determining damping factor is the ratio of speaker voicecoil imoedance to output impedance passive will generally have poorer damping in the bass= more out of band resonance. The answer is simple. Use laminated steel core bass inductors and low output impedance amps. Too many badly advised people being recommended set amps by numpty reviewers!

    I hope you see this after being posted a year after you released this... I have 6.5 DD 1506 supertuned woofers. I hooked my Dats V3 up and followed the instructions just as I always have on all my other builds. I calibrated both the leads and the impedance. I then ran the free air sweep. Then, I added weight to run the VAS sweep. I started out with a beanbag, got a error saying not enough weight 25% less than the FE. So I added more weight. Keep getting the same error. I went all the way up to 10 lbs and then even 25lbs. No, it didnt bottom out the sub as these things are beasts. But even with that weight, it still gives me that error. Im at a loss. Is this defective? Have you experienced this and what ir how did you fix it?

    I had a similar problem. I have not gone back to test that sub, but I did get some advice from a viewer. Make sure that you re-run the sweep with no weight before you add more weight.

    @@bencook8109 It's a known issue with long excursion drivers (other factors also) so take the first sweep again and note the drivers FS then clear that setting and do a fresh sweep but this time with the added mass attached with BluTack (I use the cheap digital micro scales and lead or washers usually 50g total, weight incl BluTack). You want it to move the FS down by 25% (eg: FS is 40hz so 25% is 10hz meaning 30hz is your target or thereabouts on the sweep). Once you're close then clear that and rerun original sweet without added mass and then with the added mass required and it should punch out a result.

    If you're trying to get the TS parameters then measure the coils in parallel. If you're trying to get your box tuning it does not matter how the coils are wired when you measure them. Make sure you disconnect your amplifier before you measure anything.

    - just got the DATS V3 - - initially it would not work and gave "The sweep was not detected". So in Windows 10 I had to give the Microphone permission to use apps - then things were working. It doesn't seem to have Z overlays ? - or can a number of impedance sweeps be stored as with the old WT3 system ??. Also, as it uses USB speaker out, that seems to preclude listening to KZread, etc. while using the device - - ??

  • @DIYAudioGuy

    @DIYAudioGuy

    Жыл бұрын

    I'm not sure how to do the overlays you're talking about, I don't do much with it besides run sweeps supported enclosures to make sure that I got the tuning frequency I was shooting for. I typically just grab a screenshot of that so I can show it in the videos. The device itself seems to be a small amplifier, if you plug it in and connect it to a speaker you can hear the audio from the computer coming through the speaker. That's not really practical for listening to music. I suppose there is a way to route the sound to an audio output instead of to the USB. That's more of a computer software thing and not really my area of expertise.

    @@DIYAudioGuy Thanks for the reply- Here's the way to save up to 20 sweeps - I had forgotten how to do it from WT3 days "9) After measuring the speaker you can:  Save the data to one of 20 project memories (Alt+1 saves to Memory 1 for example)  Save a DATS project file (file extension .tzz) which includes your test setup and all 20 memories  Export the parameters and impedance data in either “.txt” or “.zma” formats  Overlay plots of various measured impedances from the 20 memories for detailed comparison  Print a report showing the impedance and parameters of the displayed memories"{

    hi when you did ported sub tuning was there a cross over in the cabinet? or was that a test enclosure? can i use my existing cab to to test box Vas if it has crossover in ? I am new to this and its confusing as heck :)

    None of the speakers that I tested in this video had any kind of crossover attached. You don't need to cross over to run the sweep, but if there is a crossover inside the enclosure you'll be able to see the effects of it in the plot.

I think I answered my own question when I tried it ! Values were weird . Made much more sense when I connected directly to woofer but wasn’t fully sealed as wires had to go in through the baffle cut out

    Ok, I've got a mystery for you to figure out. I have a Monitor Audio 12" that I just tried getting the TS parameters using the DATs v3, but when I tried measuring the VAS, it told me to add more weight than the 506g that I had on there. I kept going up and up, and it keeps saying to add mas. I'm now up to 4094 g, and it's still saying TO ADD MORE MAS!!!! What the heck IS GOING ON???!!! The first measurement was fine, but not the VAS. Any advice?

  • @DIYAudioGuy

    I've seen that happen before. Make sure that you restart the process if you're adding extra weight. So take the weight off and do the initial sweep before adding a larger weight. If that doesn't work, my advice is to reach out to parts Express and see if they can provide some tech support.

    @@DIYAudioGuy Well, I figured out what happened, and I've never seen this happen before, but the driver locked up from the test. I know, impossible, right? All I can think of is MAYBE it was ready to go anyway, and that tiny little signal pushed it over the edge. I don't know how else to explain it other than an act of God, but he and I are on good terms so I've counted that one out....lol.

Does anyone know a database that maintains realistic measured Thiele Small Parameters? If every KZread basshead channel had a Dayton DATS we would have a vast realistic database.

    Just order the dats from your Amazon link. Do you know if you can download the program on multiple laptop and use the dats in whichever one is convenient at the time? And it doesn't matter how many sub/impendance is in a box to find its box tuning? It just needs to sweep at the speaker terminals right?

  • @DIYAudioGuy

    You will have to read the end user license agreement, I do not remember if you can load the software on multiple machines. No you does not matter how many subwoofer are in the enclosure, just hook up to the terminals on the enclosure. Make sure the speakers are not connected to an amp when you run the sweep or else bad things will happen.
