If you ever think “wow, this is so bad. There’s no way anyone thought this would become popular”, just remember that Romance On A Rocketship was signed to Island Def Jam Records, who also signed artists like Fall Out Boy, Frank Ocean, Hanson, Shania Twain, Sum 41 and Saliva. People genuinely believed they were gonna break out into the mainstream.

Cash Cash was a scene band who surpassed the scene by wisely deciding to stop making scene music, and become DJs. They ended up having a massive hit song with Bebe Rexha, and produced songs for A-list pop stars such as Pink. Now they’re a relevant festival EDM band. All that growth for a band that started by playing Cobra Starship type music.

The early to mid 2000's was such a weird and experimental time for music. I can't be the first person to have this idea, but I've never heard anyone mention it, I think it had a lot to do with the increased commercial availability and decreasing cost of music production software and equipment. If you were 16 and had a part time job, you and your friends could go in and for a couple hundred bucks get a DAW and an interface and just go down some weird rabbit holes. There's definitely an ambient musique concrete grindcore band I was involved in floating around the internet featuring a box fan on vocals.

There used to be a venu in Evansville Indiana called Boney Junes that closed down in 2012. Notable bands that performed were Askikg Alexandria, Memphis May Fire, Hawthorn Heights, August Burns Red, Black Veil Brides, and the list goes on. I grew up about 40 minutes north of here. You are correct it’s a very small city in South West Indiana. Scene music was very popular in this area back then.

I work part-time at a dive bar in Minnesota. The Midwest Scene Kid plaid shorts fit is still very much worn by some of my 30-year-old late night regulars. Somewhat related, I was drunk at a bar one night and put a $20 into the Touch Tunes and selected nothing but A7X and Atreyu. After one song the bar shut it off and switched to a regular playlist.
