The Ultimate Kent Trouvaille Dropper Hack
I (literally) hacked my Kent Trouvaille Hardtail Mountain Bike
Hardcore Hardtail MTB Project Phase One. A non standard 30.4mm seat tube will not deter me from making this bike into a VERY trail capable Hardtail Mountain Bike. Links to all the tools and Parts used in this video are below. Some are affiliate links which help support the channel.

Would you do this to a bike? The biggest hurdle (the wierd seat tube) has been overcome. The rest is easy. Let's see how much we can improve this bike.

Nope, well, not exactly. I went with a 27.2 dropper and a shim to start. I made my little hole at 10 o'clock on the lower part of the seat tube, similar to how you ran your cable. I didn't use a grommet to keep the hole smaller. Of course, I wish you luck with your mod. It's bold and awesome. Wolf Tooth makes a very nice seatpost clamp that will exactly fit the external diameter of the tube.

@@StevenYoungEtc Very understandable. A bit of a high consequence mod. Thanks for the Wolftooth tooth suggestion. I love their products. Plus they're made here in the Midwest. 🙌

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video. 😁
a shim and a 27.2 mm post worked great on mine and i didn't have to reem my frame avoiding the warranty. like we care about that anyway. I'm a machinist so i thought of this but only using the ol mill with the reamer but it was so much easier to do it the way i went, but I'm glad you did this, it needed to be made. great video.

Thank you! The 27.2mm with shim is definitely safer route. But it wouldn't be any fun if we didn't take some chances. 😁
I like your solution to the odd size seat post! Ive seen those cheap reamers for sale and wondered if they worked.

That's good to hear! I'm loving the extra drop. The bike feels and fits nicely now.
only thing I would change is the dropper port on the frame, you would be able to drill on the inside of the frame and keep it fully internal. other then that, it's coming along nicely!
@AdrenalineIsLife

So far so good. 😁 I considered running it that way but it would run through the bottom bracket which didn't sit well with me.
Nice! 🙂

Thanks!
ahaha, that derailleur hanger. What is the dimension of the drive end of the reamer? If you can find a different style tap handle, it should give you a little more depth - IF that tap handle will fit in the seat tube.
@AdrenalineIsLife

IIRC 5/8in. I tried finding finding an extender but no luck. I'm not sure where to begin searching.
I used a 18mm star socket with an extension to get deeper into the frame with the reamer. Once you go deep enough, spin the reamer to the left to get it loose. It was a little tedious to get it back out, but it worked. I also drilled the dropper cable run internally in the bottom of the seat tube. It is accessible, barely, through the port at the bottom of the down tube On a side note, how many spacers did you end up using on the IXF BB when you installed the cranks?
@AdrenalineIsLife
Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip. I may end up just doing that. I believe I used one spacer on the drive side.

What’s the seat post clamp size pls I don’t have a tool
My question with this is the wall thickness remaining in the seat tube. What is the OD diameter of the seat tube on the Trouvaille vs a standard mountain bike that accepts that style dropper post? Does reaming this out make it thinner than what we would see on a standard mountain bike, or closer to that spec?
@AdrenalineIsLife
Ай бұрын
I measured the wall thickness of the tubing, and it was thick enough that I could ream it out and have a wall thickness comparable to other bikes that I measured. That being said I don't know what grade of aluminum the bike is or anything about or how strong it is relative to other bikes. So I don't recommend doing this modification. It's safer to use a spacer with a 27.2 dropper.
Nice job! Nerves of steel to do that! I can’t figure out why Kent would put such a non standard size on there.
@AdrenalineIsLife

It was definitely a little nerve wracking. I'm guessing it was a cost cutting measure.
You had to drill a hole through the bottom of the seat tube for the cable? I dunno if mine was just made more recently, but mine has a hole at the bottom of the seat tube almost exactly where you drilled. I think they're actually listening to feedback and making changes. Now I gotta find some calipers to measure the seat tube lol

Wow! I heard that they've made some changes since the original release but didn't realize they did that. It's good to see that they're listening.

@AdrenalineIsLife It's awesome when companies listen to their customers! They used a 34.9mm seat tube, enlarged the left side port near the stem and added the port at the bottom of the seat tube. Someone at Kent has been watching all of these upgrade videos apparently lol

@AdrenalineIsLife I'm pretty new to the sport, this is my first bike since I was a teen so I don't really have much to compare it to lol. But I spent a couple months checking out videos like yours to help me decide on a budget bike. I got the Trouvaille a couple weeks ago, and I couldn't be happier. Just wanted to say thanks! I'm actually taking a break on my first trail ride right now 😂

I put a Shimano MT200 hydraulic front brake on my Trouvaille. It's so much better than the stock brakes.
I just bought a suspension seat post and it's 30.6 and my bike is 30.4. Would you recommend this?

No. Find a 27.2mm post and buy a 30.4mm adapter.
@AdrenalineIsLife

I wouldn't recommend this modification unless you have your heart set on a long travel dropper post. Even then there, are inherent risks with modifying a bike frame.
Why didn't you just use a PNW Rainier Gen 3 dropper at 27.2 with a 27.2-30.4 shim?
@AdrenalineIsLife

I wanted to run a longer drop dropper post. 27.2 limits you to 125mm of drop.
