Man Kent really knocked it out of the park with this bike. Decent budget build off the shelf from a big box store. Honestly this is how good budget bikes were built from bike shops back in the day. Finally full circle, keep setting the bar Kent!!!

This bike is a home run and a boon for beginner riders. I think the lack of a clutch is the only fault. Otherwise, it's an amazing spec for that price. Whoever handles graphics at Kent nailed this bike. It looks totally on trend and very much like a bike shop bike. It's a quantum leap in budget/big box bikes.

  • @pcbootleger

I’m actually impressed! This is actually exactly what big box stores should carry. The only other option allowed would be a rigid fork for a lower entry level model for commuting. If they can get it to this price point now, imagine how affordable it could have been just a few years ago. I am wondering if the infamous bike mechanic petition actually helped make a change. I really hope Schwinn is watching this as they make a bike that “sounds good” on paper, but then you quickly see how many corners were cut with stupid stuff like a freewheel instead of a cassette. This is one of the few big box store brand bikes I wouldn’t be afraid to recommend for beginner riders. I think a huge unintended consequence (or really just something that corporate people are paid enough to overlook) of extreme cheap big box store bikes is that they are spec’d so poorly that they fall apart which makes bikes seen as a thing for people who can’t afford cars and as a disposable object. I’m hoping this becomes the new bar to which to set the standard

I have an older Genesis 29er from Walmart. When I bought it, I brought it home and the side stand broke that first day. When I contacted the mfg'r, I was surprised that it was made by Kent. They were friendly and sent me an upgraded side stand. But the best thing is that I still have that bike, it still rides great and the only thing I really had to change on it was the crank and chainring because I bottomed it out and taco'd it, and while I was at it I replaced the bottom bracket with a sealed one. The frame quality is great and pretty lightweight considering it is a 29er.

I had always thought that Kent was a decent bike company that were USA made. Honestly I'm a bike snob, I've got three bikes and all are higher end ($3000-$5000 each). So as much as I love this channel, there's just not much on here I would ever even consider. This bike however actually has some really decent specs. 760mm bars, 9 speed single chain ring, internal cable routing, the 2.4 inch tires... The fork and brakes are absolutely garbage but for the price how could anyone complain. No dropper doesn't bother me at all, more ideal for light trail riding (at least until it gets a better fork and brakes) Throw some on some MT520 brakes and a SR Epixon and you'd have a really inexpensive but capable bike. Heck if they sold this in Canada I'd consider picking one up as a spare for friends and family visiting. Great video as always !!!

This is the perfect beginners platform because as the rider improves you can improve the parts on the bike until all you have left really is the factory frame. At that point you’d still probably spend less than if you bought a brand new high end hard tail.

It looks like you may be able to cram another shift housing next to the shift housing and run an internally routed dropper. If it really came down to it, you could attach stick on housing guides to the outside of the frame and run the shift or rear brake housing through that. You should be able to snake housing around the cartridge BB.

I was able to pick one of these up a few weeks ago. Just happened to find one in the store. Out the door was$365 and I'll say that is very reasonable for this bike. It's loaded with features of a $800+ bike. Hydraulic brakes And different forks and your set. Glad you reviewed it and threw out some specs. If you see one, get it!!! BTW in 5'10 and this frame fits like a glove. Plenty of room

I just picked one of these up tonight over a Schwinn Axum that got me in the door. Once I saw the Suntour fork I was sold. I’m a super beginner who has only ever owned big box bikes in my life and was shocked when I went looking to get back into it that no one was recommending a “beginner” mountain bike that was less than about $600 (Co Op DRT 1.1 from REI) with the next cheapest options for $1k plus. With a little bit of digging to me this would kill something like the Co-Op DRT 1.1 outside of the brakes. I look forward to enjoying this bike!

You do a great job of photographing and reviewing bikes. I like hearing your thoughts on these bikes but would really appreciate you telling what the stand over height is. I am between sizes and the manufactures seem to be trying to get us into larger than needed bikes. Stand over height helps a lot to sort that out.

I have a feeling the next version is going to be even better equipped. This was their first offering in the space to directly compete with Schwinn and Mongoose. It won't be long before hydraulic brakes, 1x large cassette drivetrains, dropper posts and other features we love will come stock. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, especially against LBS bikes in a similar space.
