I did the calculations. $400 will address all the major short comings of bike if work done yourself. Rear wheel, advent x wide range drive train, heavy thick tires from specialized, shimano MT200 brakes. It would be a very blue level trail capable bike.

I'm so glad you did a review of this bike, I think I sent you a link to this back on Jun 13, 2022, when I was looking at the Schwinn Axum at Walmart. I've graduated to a 2016 e-stream evo 3 aluminum 29 EMTB cause a friend of mine, was getting rid of it cheap, and it was too good of a deal to pass up. But I'm always keeping an eye out for something else 😊 Keep up the great videos!

it would be fine, though a cheap hub motor bike would be better unless you need a mtb and dont have space for 2 bikes. also for $1500, a 1000w hub motor will be much faster , less maintenance, and generally more reliable as its more simple and doesnt rely nor interfere with chain, gearing etc. also theres no throttle. torque sensing makes it less of an issue but i usually prefer the control of a throttle, even when pedaling.

I've been waiting for this review for a while. This is a fantastic bike for the money. I have a small fleet of E-mountain bikes: an Orbea Rise H30 a Scott Patron and this Hyper E-ride mid drive. I immediately installed Zoom hydraulic disc brakes (probably the single most spectacular improvement) wider bars with lock on grips and ditched the twist shift. The ExoForm rear shock died almost immediately so I replaced it with a Suntour Raidon R air shock and it was almost as great an improvement as the hydraulic brakes. I swapped a 27.5" free hub rear wheel that allowed some lower gearing and a better derailleur. It now has an 11-50 tooth range. I replaced the factory Suntour fork with a Suntour Epixon air fork that dropped nearly 3.5 lbs off the front! I installed a 29x2.6 Maxxis Agressor on the front and a Specialized Slaughter Grid 27.5x2.6 rear tire. I had tons of pedal strikes even with the stock 29ers so I replaced the extremely long 175mm crank arms with 165mm for me and 152mm cranks since this is now my 11 yo sons primary ride. It now weighs 51 lbs and blows me away with it's performance! It has more power than the Orbea but nowhere near the power of the Scott. It still won't hang with those expensive bikes if you're going really fast but it's 1/3 of the price after all the mods! We've ridden 20 mile rides on one charge with room to spare. This bike has logged hundreds of miles over the last 6 months and has been completely reliable. Love your videos!

Why don't all electric mountain bikes allow you to toggle off the pedal assist? Seems like almost every other bike you got to shut down completely to get the pedal assist off? This is a nice feature on this bike you can just toggle it off from 0 to 5! Anyone know why this is? Why is orbee arise and specialized and trek you have to shut down the bikes right in order not to have the motor on? It's weird they wouldn't think of just allowing you to toggle off the pedal assist??? Anyone know?

Have you considered trying to review their mid drive step through commuter? I wonder if that model might hold up better to its intended purpose. Trail riding is really tough with bottom budget components. But the street version might look better in comparison. Plus with the step through it may be the right size for a wider range of heights.

Nice video Kev, I've never ridden a torque sensor eBike but have owned 3 cadence sensor bikes, two hub drives a 500w and a 1000 watt. And a Schwinn Axum DP that I converted to eBike with a Bafang 750watt mid drive kit and a 10 speed Ltwoo drivetrain. Two things bother me about the hyper, the fact that it's 36v 250 watt, and the absolute worst thing is that freewheel setup with a bolt on wheel, that's going backwards for sure. Perhaps a lower headset adapter can allow a tapered steerer, but that head tube design makes me think otherwise. The great part of mid-drive systems os that rear wheel upgrades are super easy. I'm sure the Bike Barn has plenty components to elevate this into project status in no time.

Got to give credit to hyper. This is pretty huge deal for “budget emtb” industry. This is definitely worth your time to upgrade to level 3. Being that mid drive mountain bikes are typically a lot more expensive, the budget ceiling is a bit higher on this one. Which gives you a lot more room to say “is it worth the upgrades”? Cant wait to see what you do with it. Also when people ask me whats the best budget emtb i might finally be able to give them a reasonable answer.

Private SNAFU always found a way to break the military's rules and get into trouble. The films demonstrate in a humorous way how not following military protocol leads to things like getting blown up, shot, captured or giving away important military secrets. I always respect all of your opinions. On this one, I cannot justify the price to get a bicycle that is worth about $500 (without the motor) with a 36 volt motor. For the audience this bike is made for, they could get a wonderful 48 volt fat tire bike (20 or 26 inch wheels) that all riders could take on the trail. Yes, mid drive is very light and elegant, but a rear drive bike will do it all also. I have gone many miles in the woods with a Lectric XP 1.0 (no suspension) folding 20 inch wheel, and it had tons of power and control ability in the woods. I think if this bike was $1000 it would be a real winner.

You need a mid drive for any real trail riding. Below 2k even Chinese based mail order you are only getting rear hub.

@@bensonr2 Real trail riding is not from a Walmart bike. All rear drive fat tire bikes can ride trails (for transportation), not a competitive event for speed.

@@webchez69 You can ride a fat tire on a trail but I wouldn't recommend it. The problem is the response on the motor. That delay between stopping pedaling and the motor cutting off can easily cause you real problems. And Kev seemed to ride what I would consider real trails. I just wouldn't ride it anywhere that gnarly or where you couldn't easily walk it out should you have an unexpected issue. But I think that's reasonable on a bike that costs about a third of what a good reliable FS mid drive would.

Excellent review. This bike needs a better rear wheel, and maybe 9 speed alivio or 10 speed deore drivetrain with a clutch. Rockshox Domain 150mm travel fork but not sure if it would be possible to fit one with a headset adapter, to me the headtube looks a bit weird..? Also maybe slightly longer travel shock would be nice. I think the frame would still work with those mods, geometry wise.

I don't understand why these bikes are built with an irregular seatpost size at 30.4. First the Kent Trouville, Giordano's, now this. I wonder if these Hypers are actually made by Kent. The shims required to run a 27.2 dropper aren't long enough to be safe in most of these frames. Also, those tires are knockoff versions of the Kenda Slant 6 which were not the best when they came out over a decade ago.
