Ive installed yards and yards screen for aluminum channeling being I live in Florida. I’ve never user capri clips, but the best alternative I can recommend without making an additional purchase is to cut small 2 inch pieces of the spline use them to rough-in the screen in the same way hes using the clips. The biggest issue people seem to face, isn’t with rolling the screen, its with sizing the proper flat spline to the screen channeling. Not all channeling has the same size spline, and with changes in material of screen, you have to adjust for the additional bulk of material in that channel if your using metal screen, vs using fiberglass screen. If the flat spline is too large, good luck rolling that in no matter what tactic you try. Likewise, if the spline is too small, it wont hold up well like its designed. Just another way to install screen without needing any extra purchases.

You said it. Trying to figure out the right size spline has been an absolute nightmare for me. I have 6 different spline sizes sitting on my counter and none seem like they are going to work. Meanwhile my screen enclosure is all loose because the first size I used was too small. Nightmare!

6 years later and your video is still helping folks. I am about to replace the lower sections of my pool enclosure and have been dreading it. Your video seems to give me a little more courage, because the last time I tried to replace a screen was at least 15 - 20 years ago and it didn't go so well. I will order those clips, which are now branded as Lifestyle (as shown in your link), even though some reviewers say the material that the clips are made of is brittle and break easily. Thank you for your video. Here's to hoping my install goes well!

I was too impatient to wait for the clips to arrive, so I just used painter's tape to tape the top and did it in the order of top, left, right bottom and it turned out great. The key was knowing about the groove and following this technique for insertion, thank you! I was repairing two screen doors though, not as large of an opening.

Thank-you for doing this tutorial on installing flat spline. Due to some bad storms in the FL Panhandle January 9th, one of my big screen panels was ripped in half. As an active female, closing in on 70, I decided to tackle this project by myself. I had already ordered some other clips which are so much more difficult for me to squeeze shut. I wish I had watched your tutorial first. I found you when I was having a heck of a time installing that spline. What took me almost over an hour on one section of spline turned into only minutes for each section for the rest of my project. Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you! Your instructions saved my sanity, downplayed my excessive speaking to myself in French and helped me get a project completed most men wouldn't tackle. This is "the best tutorial on KZread to show you how to easily and effortlessly screen...using FLAT SPLINE!"

All the the others either showed spline installation without screen, spline installation with screen on a horizontal work surface, or no demonstrated use of the clips. Tutorial successfully made a real bitch job a walk in the park. My wife and dogs are also grateful - my frustration and frequent f-bombing ended after viewing Jason Cook's tutorial.

Funny thing is that I did a few of my screens a couple years back without the clips....Just have to do it on a calm day. I just taped my screen at the top with some masking tape, rolled the screen into the slot, positioned the spline as you said (I figured it out myself) and rolled it in. Then I pulled it taught at the bottom and pretty much did the same thing. Then, lastly I did the sides. Perfect! BTW, it took me awhile to find the right spline. Like you said, I tried round spline and the screens blew out on a windy day. I finally found the right spline on amazon and WALA, I was in business.

Interesting! I struggled with the flat spine for some time, in general just trying to get it started. The guys at HD recommended the round spline at the .140 size. Which immediately popped right out, so I moved to the .190 size, which worked until one of my kitties just pushed the screen right out with a paw, although it seemed tight enough for me. Then I tried the .220 round spine, which caused unmerciful problems, including getting it started, and the spline roller popping out and jabbing holes into the screen fabric. But it was very tight. Because a 50' roll of .190 spline only costs $8 and puts a decent dent in the fabric into the groove, I'm going to try that before putting out for the bucks on those clips. But you're right, this is the first video that properly explained the groove and how to insert the spline correctly, so I'll give the flat spline another try. +1! :D

I did one 6 foot by 6 foot screen install, it took over one hour to do it correctly, and it felt like 8 hours. Some pretty intense feelings of frustration, leading to the temptation to lash out, shouting with profanity. Because I had a tenant in the unit I kept quiet though. I had no screen clips to hold the screen in place temporarily. What a PITA. Thanks for your very helpful video! Next time I replace a screen I'm using screen clips.

Yeah. My x 2 channel frame blew out from concrete and put the washer sized holes in the sides and bottom frames. It blew a ceiling fan several feet outside of the porch. Wish I had used round. You take the flat spline out by pulling on it and it comes out very fast and easy. Stretch it. I watched two guys put in a lanai screen system and they were professionals and used no clips and no roller. they stretched the flat and it fell in place when they rubbed a flat dowel along it. It looked like magic but they did this daily.

Thank you so much Sir. I needed this info. My hands and body ache. I did about the same size porch and it took me about 2 hours to figure out how to take out and install the new spline. I lost my patience couldn't figure it out so went to home Depot and replaced 300' of new flat spline with .160 round spline. Got to work on porch and found it to be much more easy. In the end it looked awesome till the winds picked up and later half the porch went to shit. I just looked at it for a while in pain scratching my head like what the F@#$ happened. Started to look for answer's but to no avail till I found your informative video. Gotta go and get back the flat spline i previously had but this time thanks to you Sir I'm on a mission. You made that look so easy. I'll be kicking my ass later cause I'm to tired to do it now. Lol. Bless you and thank you.

Thanks Jason. I learned a lot watching. Great video and a big help. Screen looked nice and tight. I have used, in the past, pieces of round spline to hold the screen in place. Regardless, as long as something holds it in place. Glad I am educated and do not have to do that work for a living like KB. I can afford to hire the KB's of the world to do my grunt work, but why miss all the fun. Thanks again.

Love these clips, been using them for years now. This is the only way to put up a screen solo and to save from using to much screen. I maximize my screen by measuring out the exact size I need with an extra inch on each end. I'm here because I can never remember which way the spline goes. Thanks for the reminder @ 4:00. edit. So I checked the link and it shows I purchased these back in 2017 for $20+ship. Now they are $12+ship. These are worth it at either price.

I had a general idea, however, wanted to watch a few DIY's to be sure. You Sir, nailed it ! Can't thank you enough for your tutorial on screening and with FLAT SPLINE ! I was planning on using tape to hold screen, yeah, No, I will invest in the clips ! Many Thanks !

Thank you , best YT video on the actual technique of rescreening I've seen. In the past, I've used duct tape instead to hold the screen in place but those clips are definitely the way to go. I only wish you had to do the roof as I'm trying to figure out how to sequentially do mine from the inside out with just a ladder and no scaffolding. It will take some logical preplanning as to avoid "painting myself into a corner" so to speak...

An excellent video. Especially helpful is the information about the plastic screen clips that make it possible for one person to replace patio screens. In my case my screens are supported by channels that are only 3/4 inch thick. The clips are 1 inch, but they can easily be cut to 3/4 inch with a hacksaw. Because of the lip on the clips, they fit into the flat spine grove and hold better than metal clips and help tighten the screen. Another hint - use a spline roller with a larger roller - it makes the job easier and faster.

Great video. You could of also cut small pieces of the spline to tack in the top. Object is to get screen in perfectly straight on the top and the side. Once that's done you cant mess it up. Been professionally rolling screen for 8 years now. Great video thou
