THE ULTIMATE FAIRWAY FINDER // BRNR vs Qi10 Rocket

Спорт

Today Ian is in the bay to test out his options for a new fairway finder. With identical lofts, he puts the Qi10 Rocket fairway wood up against the BRNR Mini Driver to see which incredible club really suits his game most.

I play 2 BRNR Mini drivers. One is my driver. It’s a 11.5° head with the heavy weight forward and a 43.75” shaft. The other is a 13.5° head turned up to 14.25° with the heavy weight back and a 43” shaft. Both are super. Both are easy to hit off the deck.

Picked up last year’s BRNR driver over the winter in the hopes of being able to help my game off the tee. Having a 30” wrist to floor measurement, a fairly good swing speed at around 110 MPH, and pretty good mechanics, I could still never get a modern driver head to square up properly, even at 44.5 inches playing length. The mini driver has been everything I hoped it would be, a throwback to the small headed drivers of the late 90’s and early 2000’s that I used to hit well. I settled on a playing length of 43.25 inches with the stock stiff shaft tipped a half inch and replaced the 1.5 g forward weight with a 6 g one. It is so much easier to square up the smaller, heavier head. The neutral angle of attack feels more natural to me and I love the flatter, more penetrating ball flight I’m getting with it. I’m still hitting maybe one ball out of bounds every round, but that is a massive improvement for me. I’ve maybe given up ten yards on my best drives with the 460cc head, but if you average out all my drives, I’d say my average distance has increased. It’s given me freedom to experiment with a 44 inch playing length with my regular driver.

The mini driver from last year to me is a game changer confidence wise. I play the 11.5 with the strong weight in front. It's so satisfying to hit and the sound is amazing. Fairways after fairways, gives me the same distance as my friends crushing their drivers. We are all athletic young 90-95 scorers. Nice review.

I have to add I don't use the mini in the fairways yet as the 11.5 loft I need on the tee scares me a little bit. I will work on it at the range. I did try a rocket stealth 1st gen 3 wood and sold it fast because I could not hit it well at all.

Play my 11.5 at 13.5 and a million degrees closed for all the right to left tee shots and I never have to worry about drawing a driver. Do get the odd knuckly one high in the face of the tee but other than that goes about the same distance as a good 3 wood and unlike a 3w I actually use it. Can’t say enough good things about a mini.

I hear what you say about you hit it high but the problem I see is the gapping. From what I’ve seen, you commonly carry your driver on sim 280. What good is a 3 wood/MD you carry 270? I think I’d rather have a 14.25-15* 3 wood or MD I carry 260, then a 5 wood I carry 240. That would seem more effective gapping out on course as opposed to just the longest hitting 3 wood I can find

I had a horrible experience with Club Champion unfortunately. I was excited to get fit because I’ve been watching these videos for some time now. I went and got fitted and later found out I was paying $700 more for the shafts than at another place. I asked if cc could match them with little response. I called and emailed several times. The customer service people said the builds haven’t started so I asked them to wait until I hear back from management. Well, they pushed those things quickly out the door and management (Cindy Carlson) gave me a call to let me know they shipped. I told her I was looking at getting a match. They said they won’t match or cancel. Zero empathy and all sales. This is a really bad experience. Makes me sad to hear since I watch so many of these videos.

Done this test. A driver cut down to 43.5" with a 70 or 80g shaft is a nice fairway finder but can't be hit off the deck into a green. It's more forgiving than a mini but not as versatile. You also want to get a head with slightly more loft than you play in your standard driver. For example I play a 9* head and the shorter driver was 12*. Shorter length creates a steeper AOA so more loft is typically needed. Really all comes down to the player and whats needed in the bag.

Is the min-driver decided to be hit both off the deck and off the tee? I love my driver would be hard pressed to change it but my confidence off the tee is minimal with my 3 wood (I think I am more likely to hit it off the heel) and I have never hit it off the deck. I am much more confident with my 5 wood and my 4 hybrid. So those longer holes where I have 250-270, I don't have that club that will get it there. More often than not I am laying up and taking birdie or par. Would I benefit from something like the mini-driver?

how does Ian generate so much club head speed, he barely looks like he's swinging that fast.

Ian said the mini driver or any second driver was pointless a few years ago. Then a few tour pros used it and the sales among amateurs were strong, and now here we are showing how great they are. 😂

Maybe because mini drivers are better designed now…easier to hit off the deck so you don’t lose the versatility. Imagine thinking nothing evolves and improves. Imagine being smart enough to allow your mind to be changed when data proves otherwise. But keep hating

I would love to see the mini in the hands of someone with a 100 mph club head speed....

Why not just make the mini driver a true mini driver? A 9.5 loft but the weighting and shaft length make it easier to hit than a 460cc/45.5 inch driver? I already cut my driver down to 45 inches, and would love to go further but i throws the swing weight off and the head still feels too big. I would definitely see the value in that. I always felt my older, smaller drivers were more accurate than the 460cc era.

Someone could easily go 11.5 turned to 10* mini driver and 13.5 mini driver to 15 and not even have a driver

There is no reason for you to hit a 3 wood or mini off the deck. How many times do you hit that shot in a year? Maybe 5-10 times. Off the tee is where you should compare them for your game.

What is so odd about this title is that empirically the Arccos data doesn't support the concept of a "fairway finder". Unless it's throttling back to avoid a hazard, the accuracy gain does not justify the distance loss from the driver. 3% more fairways hit on average(49.7 for the driver vs 52.6 for 3 wood) but 12-15 yards shorter is not gaining strokes.
