    As usual your videos are absolutely brilliant and I'm looking forward to watching the rest of them. I've only started to get my head around credit and credit cards so these type of videos are really useful for me. A few months ago I rented a mobile phone with O2 and pay something like 20 or £30 per month, on my credit report it shows up as a loan off around 7 or 800 pounds that I am currently paying on time and it seems to be helping my credit score. I have recently been accepted for a Lloyds cash back reward card and a Halifax balance transfer credit card both with 900 limit and was wondering if i should use that credit line to pay off the loan and if that would help my credit score?. would I be using too much of the available credit? I'm not in any rush to pay off the loan I was just trying to increase my credit score. Sorry if this is a confusing question as I mentioned I'm new to the credit game any advice would be much appreciated.

    3 is not a huge number and if you close one it probably won't make a huge amount of difference either way. Even closing both won't - it's not like the US where things like oldest account matter in any meaningful way. So very much up to you on what you want to do with them. The one minor benefit might be if they report to a bureau that American Express does not. I cannot off the top of my head remember if Amex reports to all 3 or not.

    I only really found out about all these strategies 5-6 years ago. Prior to that I did'nt have a clue. My only wish was videos like yours were avilable about 10 years ago. I use another strategy too these days, although perhaps not suited for everyone. I use my HSBC Rewards card to top up my Revolut account. There's no fee or charge like some cards. This allows me to get 0.20% which is a pittance, but obviously depends on the amount I'm topping up by.

    Sounds like a loophole that will be closed at some point. Funding any kind of money account with a credit card should and usually does get treated as a cash withdrawal so even if it for whatever reason works now, I still wouldn't make it a mainstay of a strategy.

    @@SashaYanshin Sounds great :) I give you little nugget , section 75 with amex is extremely slow wait times of around a year maybe more, an in the end my purchase they decided not to so cant be relied on. Another one the amex chargecard is less interest free days than the credit card. An some of the other credit cards out there have less than 50 interest free days 56 interest free days is the target. Theres at least 2 lenders that always have good 0% deals on offer even for existing customers, hope this helps although you may probably know all this already.

  • @SashaYanshin

    @@russ023 :) Thanks - yeah, I've worked in the industry for long enough and am aware. Think I mention all of these in some of my videos although the existing customer 0% deals are never as good as the market leading 0% deals for new customers in my experience no matter who the provider is. That Section 75 issue sounds pretty poor - there is a way to escalate it though as it's something that is not an optional item for credit cards so if you feel you were not treated right that may be an avenue to follow.

  • @russ023

    @russ023

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@SashaYanshin Sure, new credit card deals can be a bit cheaper yet may cost a credit search an can lower your score, having a couple of cards retained which are 'cheap' 0% (an i know they all add a fee) yet consistantly offered to you as a existing customer can be useful an yeah you may end up paying a extra 0.5% for the year or 18months due to a slightly higher fee but in my opinion once you 'taken' all the new deals an you want to keep a high score an minimise number of new searches then using a 'kept' card can be useful for example when you going to be doing mortgage application in near future. Tips on section 75 are welcome. The slowness is a new issue with Amex on s75 claims. The one that got refused was a new TV brought from a dept store faulty from day 1 shop pushed problem onto manufacturer so manufacturer tried to fix yet design is flawed section 75 claim with amex did not sort it sadly. Theres another that is with a mainstream credit card I have around £5k of building goods & property services that were never supplied the supplier folded the plan on that one is a section 75 I understand theres no time limit for putting claim through for that? Card company sent the form around the time of the purchases after initiating a section 75 over the phone with them, just not sent signed form back to them complete but plan to later this year.The purchases were actually done several years back.

    I know it's a good idea to pay off your credit card in full every month without incurring interest payments so there's no negative affect on your credit score so, if you get a money transfer card or just a 0% spending card and just pay the minimum off each month (but obviously pay it off at the end) will this affect your credit score in the same way as a normal credit card where your having to pay interest each month? Or is it just the fact that having to pay the interest that affects your credit score? Thanks your help Sasha.

  • @SashaYanshin

    @SashaYanshin

    3 жыл бұрын

    Carrying a balance will have the same sort of impact whether or not it incurs interest. In fact the bureau data doesn't really share specifics on what your balance is made up of in terms of interest amounts, etc. So yes - if you load up with a big money transfer, it will impact credit and affordability if you were to apply for other types of credit and can be material if, for example, you apply for a mortgage.

But of course there is the risk in the credit card not having a fixed repayment schedule AND the potential risk of not being able to shift the balance when the 0% runs out that needs to be considered.

    I’m sorry Sasha, but credit cards aren’t worth it, morally should you even be promoting them to people? Tell me how do credit card companies exist? Because enough people have to pay late interest fees which are usually huge. You should be teaching people to use a debit card and invest whatever spare change they have into a vanguard account or perhaps a riskier play such as crypto. This is how you build wealth - you don’t become wealthy off credit cards; they are pretty much a scam. ‘The right credit card’ there’s no such thing 😂 Otherwise the company wouldn’t exist. Debt is wrong, and credit cards create debt. Then you talk about building a credit score - why should someone make a score to allow them to get into debt? The whole thing is a complete scam. Pay your bills with the money you earn, not with a cc company that will make you pay it back with crazy interest. You seem like an intelligent guy so it bothers me why you would promote this sir...

    Hey Jack - I agree and disagree with your point at the same time :) Only just saw this - KZread flagged it as spam so I had to go and manually approve it. I even have a whole video about the negative side of credit cards called The Ugly Truth About Credit Cards so I definitely cover both sides. However, used right credit cards can give a lot of advantages and I disagree with a black and white statement that all credit and all debt is bad. In fact, used smartly, debt is the most powerful tool to get to wealth through financial leverage but that’s a topic for another day. To answer a couple of your major points: 1. Not all credit card companies profit exclusively through people paying a tonne of fees, etc - eg Amex where the primary business model is built on interchange. 2. The vast majority of credit card companies’ revenues comes from interest, not penalty fees. Actually penalty fees are a pretty small percentage of overall revenue. I do agree that interest is not great either but just to clarify. 3. Credit cards and good credit scores can make a huge difference to people’s lives: 1. Section 75 protection 2. Fraud prevention 3. Access to products where credit is required (eg mobile phone contracts) 4. Ability to buy a property with a cheap mortgage instead of renting until you’re 60. 5. Ability to get a load of perks, cashback and rewards as per this video. Anyway - I made a few videos where I go through all the benefits. If you don’t like the idea of credit cards that’s up to you and I am not forcing you to use them. But the truth is that there are many noticeable and significant advantages IF USED RIGHT which do need to be acknowledged.
