I watched Finn last year, and he said a comment - probably about a band I like - that made me be like “Eh, I don’t think this fool’s content is for me. I don’t think I like him.” Though, of course, my autistic-ass didn’t pick up right away just how dry his sarcasm and satire is. Though, never unsubscribed from his channel or Punk Rock MBA. Wasn’t a day that went by I didn’t see his channels recommended on my YT page. This last month or so, out of complete boredom from everything and anything - I decided to watch some of his videos. Aaaaaaand now Finn is one of my top favorite content creators - I always look forward to his videos; especially, cause they are always posted in the mornings, precisely when I wanna listen to this type of content And I can’t get enough of his dry-snark. Which, I find to be hilarious - being I have my own incredibly dry sense of sarcasm humor, and have the same issue with people towards me, as I did with Finn. My autistic-ass definitely qualifies under the “r-word.”

@JoeyVilleneuve YOU know funny thing is but rock has the reputation of being meatheads and having limited knowledge of metal, same can be said about the emo/metacorel/deathcore crowd they also have a limited knowledge of what metal is and also only deem something metal if the entire song is blast beats and breakdowns I know because I have spoken to members of a local band in the core crowd. Mark Tremonti is just as knowledgeable about the history of metal as Sinyster Gates, Bert McCracken, or Howard Jones yet from what I have perceived Metalcore and Deathcore gets more respect for some reason I don't know why they are not more talented! Honestly, I miss the era where mainstream rock bands like these were at the forefront of pop culture marketing. Movie trailers, game trailers, WWE PPVs. @@chrisitalia8868 Well come to the U.K., because none of these bands got any attention in the U.K. As a Brit that loves Nu-Metal and so called “Butt Rock”, the U.K. is the worst place to live if you like that music. Over here in the U.K. were very British music comes first, and if you’re not a British band you either need to sound like you’re British like White Stripes, Arcade Fire, The Killers, Kings Of Leon and The Sissor Sisters, none of those bands are British but they all sound British. Or you need to be so mainstream that’s it’s impossible to not ignore like Guns N Roses, Bon Jovi, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Green Day, Linkin Park. Bands like Creed, Limp Bizkit, Godsmack, Five Finger Death Punch, Saliva, Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, Theory Of A Deadman get/got no attention over here in the U.K. The only 3 bands of that era that got any attention in the U.K. were Nickelback, Evanescence, and Linkin Park, no other band from that era got any attention here in the U.K. But like I said here in the U.K. we are very British music first and as a Brit I hate British music. But it’s a generational thing. If you’re a Boomer or Gen Xer in the U.K. you’re very British culture comes first. But if you’re a Millennial or Gen Zeder in the U.K. you’re very American culture comes first. Anyone in the U.K. born after 1984 is very Americanised, and the Boomers and Gen Xers can’t stand it.

@@robwalsh9843 Not really no. The thing is in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, British culture was at its peak in those decades, be it the Mod Subculture, The Beatles, 70’s U.K. Glam Rock, the late 70’s Punk movement, Football hooligan culture, Pub culture, 80’s New Wave, New Romantics, and Goth subculture. The 60’s, 70’s and 80’s was British culture at its peak. Then 1991 happened and everything changed, suddenly everything was going on in the US in the 90’s, 00’s and 10’s. Nirvana and Grunge, Seinfeld, Jordan and the 90’s Chicago Bulls, Friends, 2Pac and Gangster Rap, Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Eminem, Limp Bizkit, South Park, Leo DiCaprio, Jerry Springer Show, American culture was everywhere in the 90’s and 00’s. So the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s was the peak of British culture and if you weren’t there in those decades like I wasn’t, I don’t get it and never will. But the ‘90s, 00’s and 10’s has been United States’s culture at its peak.

IDK, I think hair metal had a strong element of showmanship that "butt rock" kinda lacks for the most part. Hair metal bands' penchant for saying, doing, and writing shocking and controversial things was a big part of the appeal of the genre. Their stage presence also played a major role in the genre's widespread popularity. By contrast, the bands commonly categorized under the umbrella of butt rock were not particularly notable for their stage presence and didn't make the effort to craft holistic personas in the way that hair metal artists did. They also weren't doing anything particularly shocking; while they did often have explicit, profane, or "edgy" aspects to their image, sound, or lyrical content, they didn't push cultural boundaries in the way that hair metal bands did. By the time "butt rock" rolled around, our culture had already become accustomed to explicit and "edgy" forms of media, so the "butt rock" bands were not particularly rebellious and were not seen as such. In fact, one of the biggest criticisms of these bands has been their tendency to "play it safe" and generally adhere to trends rather than experiment and chart new territory. This led to detractors of "butt rock" bands to argue that rather than truly creating something new, they simply pander to already existing cultures and scenes in the pursuit of commercial success. Also, these bands don't tend to have a particularly innovative image and their identity is usually based more around the sound of their music rather than any defined image. (There are some exceptions to this - for instance, Three Days Grace certainly had a recognizable image and consistent lyrical themes - but this is generally the case among bands labeled "butt rock".)

When I think of the roots of butt rock, I think of producer Robert "Mutt" Lange, 80s AC/DC, Def Leppard, Foreigner, BIlly Squier, Sammy Hagar, Boston, "Hair Metal", Styx, The Runaways, Kiss, 80s rockin' country, and on and on. Long live butt rock's cultural heritage!

One butt rock band that was extremely popular but doesn’t get enough love nowadays is Lifehouse. In 2001, their song Hanging By a Moment was the number one best selling song across all genres in the US, beating Alicia Keys, Janet Jackson, Train, Jennifer Lopez and Matchbox 20. They had 3 other hits later on in 2002, 2005 and 2007. They were a huge band and they hold up but I’ve never heard anyone talk about them let alone say Lifehouse is their favorite band.

Fun fact: Rivers Cuomo, the lead singer of Weezer, actually co-wrote "Stupid Girl" by Cold. He even provided backing vocals. Apparently, Cold sought him out after they were in the process of writing the song and the singer thought the guitar riff resembled something you'd hear in a Weezer song.

I was born in 98 and I grew up on all this music, I absolutely love it. I used to listen to it on the radio with my dad all the time (R.I.P. 89 X) and I still listen to this stuff to this day. Theirs a few bands from the genre I can't stand but for the most part its pretty good all around. I can definitely see it coming back around and already kind of is back with people who are my age and close to it especially the aesthetic. I saw some like 18 year old kid come in my work with an affliction style shirt and a chunky chain today and im for it!

Finn, do you consider Trust Company of Downfall fame a Butt Rock band? They always come to my mind when BR is mentioned but never hear anyone else mention them in that context. Also, an interesting note about Butt Rock. Modest Mouse has a deep cut, outtake from 1997, but released as a single 7” in 2014 called Too Many Fiestas For Reuben that has a line that says “He's 25, hanging out at the high school Everyone but the butt-rockers knows that ain't cool”. I was surprised that term was around in ‘97.

I kind of disagree with the lyrical description of butt rock bands. It sounds like they’re describing bands like Five Finger Death Punch or Godsmack specifically. A lot of butt rock bands don’t behave like that. Bands like Shinedown or Breaking Benjamin definitely don’t have that kind of style.
