Fitted wireless Tado boiler thermostat, Tado smart valves & extra temp sensors in each room (expensive). 2 years on I love the Off & On’able nature of adjusting each radiator or zone. Love the valve auto shut off when a window/ door is left open . Also it lowers the house temp ( if you want) when we everybody leave the house. Love it 👍

Really appreciate this video, I was about to buy a wired kit and 8 smart TRVs to zone the whole house! I think now i’m going to just get the thermostat and stick with regular TRVs upon hearing this! The smart TRVs just aren’t worth the outlay if having your radiators call for heat individually based on room timing is a bad idea in my opinion

By good fortune I purchased the wired version because my old thermostat was also wired, so it was a direct swap. However the old thermostat was a basic Honeywell on/off relay, so the instructions were based on what thermostat was being replaced. In reality, my boiler, a Vaillant Home Combi 30kW supports modulation and just needs the same pair of wires to be connected to a different set of terminals at both ends. So in short, getting my wired Tado and existing boiler to work together using modulation is relatively easy but it took this video and a lot of Google searching to find this out.

I actually just installed a Tado wired thermostat like 2 weeks ago. No smart valves or anything like that, just the thermostat (ours was dying and I wanted a smart thermostat) Honestly, I love it. The wife does especially since she's disabled, so if she gets too cold, she can open the app and just hit "boost heating" and not have to worry about trying to get downstairs and all the rest of it. Had no idea about the modulating controls, nor what they do. I may have to look into that and see if it's something my boiler supports. I also want to look at adding smart valves later, money being the restricting factor there, but i've also heard they have connection issues since they all need to connect to the internet dongle thing you get with the thermostat and thus I may need additional ones of those.

We've had a Tado system for a good few years now - I can't honestly say it's changed the bills (small kids, I wasn't keeping track of bills pre smart meters etc), but I will absolutely shout from the hills they're great for setting asthmatics rooms warm enough that they stop coughing all night long when that lurgy arrives. Can keep the rest of the house off but keep the little ones rooms warmish. And measure all the heatwave temps for geekery and seeing if you should have the windows open or not 😎. Modulation is the one thing I'm missing out on with mine - if there's one with it I'll be grabbing it with both hands when we replace the boiler. I have the feeling we're not actually running that efficiently at the moment...

My biggest gripe with Tado is they took away simple, energy-saving automations that don't incur any added cost to them, and brought them back as an subscription-only model. Between that and taking away modulation they seem more concerned with stripping features to increase profits than adding new ones.

Or rather, taking away a headline feature without telling anyone. Not very trustworthy. @@HeatGeek I should have explained - I have WC on my Midea system that automatically deals with the flow temperatures as per any other WC system. The problem I was having was that the Tado was calling for heat and cycling the ASHP as if it were a boiler. After a lengthy message thread, Tado escalated it and came up with a specific solution to reduce the cycles, which by the way were wasting so much energy it was driving me to despair!! I've pasted their reply to give some more context. So far so good though, it looks to have solved the issue. I'm hoping a lot more people see this, as the system really does need tailoring for every ASHP owner controlling via a Tado: Hello, Thanks for your message. We have applied the parameters for the heat pump. This will reduce the on/off cycles of the heat pump as it is recommended by our developers. This also means that the relay mechanism is only activated by 50% of heat requests. In case you have any more questions, do not hesitate to reach out to me directly.

I was then excited that they are now bringing it back but I'm in their website now and cannot find out what it is I need to upgrade my system to support modulation. Have Nest now but not a patch on Tado which had wonderful features including geofencing and learning something that doesn’t work with Nest. Yin could also just boost for an hour say at night and go to bed It’s biggest fault was your schedule data being held on a server so if internet goes off and you’re away it will either stay off or on permanently. This is where nest is better as schedule data held on unit. If Tado had this I would switch back.

I have requested a return of mine with the supplier. @Heat Geek, is this really something you would find acceptable? There are literally so many ways your internet could go down and to not have the device revert to schedule, is crazy...imagine Grandma, or young kids sitting in a cold house, with no hot water and heating, all because their internet connection went down, or their switch or router failed. It's nuts and Tado should think very hard about adding this feature. I certainly couldn't recommend this device to anyone. This is their number one requested feature (440+ votes), and they just decline to do anything about it for all their existing customers, instead probably focussing their time on new paid-for feature. Pretty shocking Engineering tbh.

It could be because the Tado installation instructions defaulted to on/off control. It is what happened when I installed on our Glow-worm boiler. Fortunately, I managed to find the digital instructions and get it working with E-Bus and the Tado system works great with it! Modulating controls is something to shout about, especially when so much of the "smart thermostat" competition is anything but smart. I have had a Tado for years. It used to be really good but in the last few years added features don't work that well. The simple heating hours tally doesn't even work as they include hours when the Tado is asking for heat but the boiler isn't even fired up! Energy IQ which could be really useful doesn't reflect energy usage at all probably due to the heating hours being wrong. The smart radiator thermostats when they can call for heat turn themselves so low at times the radiator that is asking for heat often doesn't get enough so the boiler stays on for ages. If they're set as independent they open up more so they actually work. Early start feature used to work well but now it's hit and miss so target temperature is often not reached anywhere near the correct time. Ideas are great but some of the implementation is a bit weak at times.

So - you still get digital connections on the Wired Tado stat. Initially, I bought the UK V3+ wireless starter kit with hot water control to replace my S-plan system thermostat. I then got some TRVs. Then I bought an add-on wired thermostat, connected that to the boiler via the digital terminals and set to OpenTherm mode, and changed my CH valve for a N/O valve which is powered from the switched live on the DHW valve (PDHW). The wireless receiver (and cylinder stat) is still controlling the original N/C DHW valve via the wireless thermostat (located in the kitchen), and the new wired thermostat (located in the utility room) is controlling the CH via OpenTherm. Easy peasy to go into each room in the Tado app and change the Zone Controller over to the wired thermostat. It would be nice to have the digital terminals in the wireless receiver box, but adding on a wired thermostat for OpenTherm control wasn't the end of the world, and way easier than trying to find European extension kits via eBay to get the option!

When the hot water is on in Tado and the cylinder stat is not satisfied, the wireless receiver turns on the DHW zone valve, which powers closed the normally open CH valve, and sends a traditional switched live to the boiler. That boiler switched live overrides both OpenTherm control and weather compensation and runs the boiler at whatever temp is set on the boiler front panel temp dial, to recharge the DHW cylinder (I have it on max to reheat as quickly as possible). When the hot water demand is satisfied or the hot water control turns off in the app, the boiler goes back to normal CH OpenTherm control via the wired Tado thermostat. I have my hot water set in the app to come on for an hour, once at 14:00 - 15:00 and again at 22:00 - 23:00. • @kharyandmariemanderson9347

No modulation just means that the boiler fires at lower flow temperatures and in doing so avoids wastage. It may take longer to get to your desired temperature but it’s more efficient. A boiler thermostats without modulation would fire the boiler at full blast, sometimes 30kwh… get to the temperature quickly, overshoot then switch off the boiler again waiting for the temperature to drop. It’s simply not necessary when you can fire the boiler at 3kw get the temperature more slowly and keep that low level of burn constantly to maintain the temperature. So no more on off cycling. It’s also way better for you boiler as that very on off cycling causes so much wear and tear on the boiler.

@@MrRawMonkey yes. Here is another example. You are driving a car an want to maintain a speed of 30mph in getting to the shops. The ‘non modulated boiler’ approach would be to floor the accelerator to the max, every time the speed drops below 30mph. Then when the car inevitably overshoots 30mph it takes the foot off the pedal. So you get this sharp on off approach which shoots over and under 30mph. The modulated approach would allow you you simply hold the accelerator at the right level to achieve 30mph. You can imagine I’m the first example you would use far more fuel than in the second example. It’s the same with boilers. The flow rate will be matched to the minimum amount needed to achieve your desired temperature. Moreover modern boiler designs are really efficient when the boiler a) has a lower flow temp below 55 degrees or below b) left on more more constant periods. Both of the above enable the condensing cycle which recaptures the heat in the system. Hope that helps

The reason I watch this channel is because I believe in what Heat Geeks are trying to do. It is definitely an education. The cost of something as simple as heating your home is going mad. If I was still there finding cost effective alternatives would be high on the agenda. But this video highlights the same old problem. If you have the money you can save money. New technology is expensive until it is not new but common place. Heat pumps are super expensive. This blokes thermostat is obviously expensive. The government grant for as long as it lasts still favours the rich. In your average terraced house that millions live in I don't believe retro fit Heat pumps are currently a viable solution. What else is out there to save the working man money that he doesn't have to hock his Granny to install. I watch the heat pump install videos. Posh houses in the stock broker belt. I used to live in a 2 up 2 down terrace with thousands the same around me. Stand in the kitchen and practically touch all four walls. Even the tiny gas boilers taking up valuable space. These heat pumps seem huge. And then you have buffer tanks and huge pipe runs etc. You say you look to the future of the heating industry. What is being done for the lower end of the market. The people that really need to save money. Compact. Cheap to install and buy. Cheaper to run units that fit the average 2 up 2 down. Probably not a lot. They used to say if you wanted to see what was happening in the car world look at a Mercedes SL and you will see what might be on your car in 10 to 20 years time. This seems the same. The technology is out there at a price but we can't all afford an SL Mercedes.

Stay clear from them. You don't need to have a smart meter put in to monitor how much you're using. You can get clamp on monitors that can be fitted to existing meter

Totally disagree. They can't force you to have a smart meter. It's all a con by giving cheaper tariffs for people who adopt them when electricity is the same no matter what meter you have. When they have enough people on them they will hike the prices up anyway. The thing with smart metres is they can hike them up on the fly. People need to wake and see the bigger picture because it's not about the customer benefiting it is the supplier. It's also putting people out of work

@@Messimagician83 They can’t force you to have a smart meter now, but eventually that won’t be the case. The meters are part of the country’s energy infrastructure, and belong to the networks, not the consumer. Do we have any say in what kind of tills Tesco uses? Because I have a smart meter, I’m paying 3p for gas and 15p for electricity today. That suits me down to the ground.

This is good news, but it *really* wasn’t clear when I bought my wireless receiver that it would be on/off only. The internet is a mixed place and a lot of the material at the time talked about modulation and opentherm etc. Is there any plan to offer a discounted or tradein opeion for those that bought the wireless thermostat instead of eg Hive specifically for the modulation?

Hi, part of this is an effort to raise awareness and clear up some of the information that had gotten confusing over the last few years. Unfortunately we don't have a program in place for a discount or trade in option, I'm sorry about that

  • @MrKlawUK

@@CameronHarrisWood appreciate the reply - I’ve just seen there is a bolt-on as well which isn’t as expensive so thats an option. For Heat Geek, would be good to get a follow up on tado with opentherm following this. I’ve read mixed things about its modulation being load based vs a boiler with weather compensation being weather based. So eg on a warm day if the delta between the desired and current temp is high, Tado with opentherm will set a high flow temp which you may not want, where a weather compensating boiler would set a lower one. Comparing and contrasting may help those of us with relay based setups understand if its worth updating to opentherm or keeping relay and letting the boiler handle the flow temps?

@@LeoShoSilva Check if you have a modulating boiler first :) If you do, and you know how to fit it correctly to modulate, then the modulating thermostat is for you. If not, and you want to self-install, you might find it easier to go without this feature or ask a heat engineer to help you install it. This is why we still have the non-modulating thermostat on more consumer sales channels, as they take a little more knowledge to install. @@LeoShoSilva This is true, but you'll need to make sure you purchase a starter kit at least once (as this includes the internet bridge). Shame Tado doesn't allow for using Octopus's 35% off code to buy the kit that does modulation. Just bought Worcester Comfort II controller off eBay instead. Gotta love blaming the people in the UK for removing it though. "Hey we had this feature that we didn't advertise properly to our customers, so we removed that feature for cost savings which don't exist because the price is exactly the same for both SKU's and stocking 2 SKU's cost more money than what we saved." It's more likely that the German company decided to remove an energy saving feature that cost pennies to include from UK models as a middle finger to the UK for Brexit. Short sighted company.
