The Ugly Duckling That Can: Beretta PX4

Long neglected here in TNP, Beretta PX4 we head out to prove that this "ugly duckling" of a gun shoots ugly. But we end up getting faced: the fact is the Beretta PX4 is an outstanding pistol possessing outstanding design. Check the amazing accuracy it achieved in field conditions, shown in the video. It has minimal muzzle rise, has a great trigger, is smooth, and was reliable. And this example that Gunnies Western Wear loans us is a heavily used and beat up cop gun! For the low price of this used PX4 buying it would be a no brainer. Like the clumsy Albatross of the oceans, once airborne (in action) the Beretta PX4 soars and should impress all shooters with its capabilities, track record, and value.

That's a Type F. Type G decocks but does not stay on safe. Love mine, also in .40. Over a thousand rounds down range with minimal cleaning, no stoppages. Handles better than any other .40 I have tried (Glocks, M&P, XD, SIG, Walther, etc). It is a true sleeper.

And any type F can be converted to type G just by removing a ball bearing and small spring that act as a detent inside the safety. This is intentional on Beretta's part. They intended for the px4's safety to be easily changed to what the user wants.

@FyrFytr998 Yes, there is a firing pin block that must be cleared by the final take-up of the trigger in order to free the firing pin to move to strike the primer. Unlike most other brands, Beretta design their firing pin blocks to protrude out of the top of the slide when they are clear of the firing pin. That seems to annoy some shooters, but if the pin is sticking up without the trigger being actuated, it means the firing pin block is not blocking the trigger and the pistol if not drop-safe.

I don't know why people think the PX-4 is ugly or odd looking, I see it as a more masculine looking version of the Cheetahs but in a larger caliber. Of course I also think the A-10 Warthog is one of the best-looking planes in the US military. 🤔

I think this gun is a cult favorite. If you really want a double action option, it's certainly one of the better choices out there and the rotating barrel makes the recoil impulse quite manageable even in .40. I believe it has some competition following as well. And let's be honest, they're still making the thing so someone's buying them. :)

YES! Ernest Langdon did a 50,000 round endurance test on his PX4 last year... his results/wrap-up video is EXCELLENT! (he's past 52,000 on his compact, but it was not documented in the same manner as the full-size last year) After this year's SHOT Show he got the pistol back, cleaned it up and still trains & teaches classes with it. He said he's seen no measurable loss in accuracy ...it's still more accurate than he is :)

007bondson1 Yeah my AR does the same. Oh wait. I zeroed it at 50yds.... Maybe that has something to do with it 🤔 I’d advise you to test at longer ranges. No gun will hit a bullseye at 10ft if it’s zeroed at a much further distance. Perhaps learn about zeroing sights and learn how much you need to compensate to hit what you want at 10ft. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Nice review. I’ve owned the storm compact for six years now and really love it. I have close to 3,500 rounds and can say accept for hiccup now and then, it shoots flawlessly. Accuracy is a bell ringer. Hard pressed to miss an 8” plate at 7-10 yds. While it’s a great range and home defense pistol, it is somewhat challenging as a concealed carry. It is a little bulky and weighs in at close to 30 oz loaded with 15 rounds. Overall, this is a pistol that I know I can count on and doubt I would ever part ways with. It’s a keeper.

I love that the px4 is still an underdog. I can pretty much base my judgment on who the guy is when he rolls up with a px4. Dude does his own research and doesn’t care what other people think. He’s about performance. Bought a used px4 a while ago in .40 - thinking all along it was in 9mm. When I drove away I noticed the magazine said .40 and at first I thought, “oh shoot - maybe I have the wrong magazine!” Nope. It was a .40 pistol. I was bummed till I took it to the range. Shoots BEAUTIFULLY. I walked away from .40 years ago after shooting my dad’s g23. To me this px4 in .40 shoots as smooth as my p226 in 9mm - I’m serious. Loved it so much that now I’m in the market to buy every variant of px4 I can find. I called around to every gun store in my area and sure enough, the doucheiest one said, “oh, I would recommend to stay clear of the px4” (I got excited to hear this “experts” reasoning). “The rotating barrel is cool and all but it wears out really quick and Beretta doesn’t warranty the barrel.” I told him, “dude, you know NATO approved this gun to go 100k rounds right? Ernest Langdon put over 50k rounds through one in one year and only had 9 stoppages and no breakages, right? This store is notorious for having the stereotypical gun-counter-expert. It felt good to thank him for his opinion. Didn’t stop me. I’m still gunna buy every variant I can find.

While it's true that I like to own lesser known , but highly regarded items, whether it be cars, guns, or guitars, I do understand the lack of 3rd party accessories for these items, namely guns. However, I've found the trigger out of the box on my Steyr is better than any stock Glock (both Austrian), period, so no need to spend extra money on another trigger set up.

I love mine. The 9mm was so good I bought another in .40 S&W. As an homage to the Broomhandle, I have painted a big red "9" on the 9mm one. I'll never part with either. I think that the angled facets on the slide look badass. The gun's fit in my hand when I first picked it up is what sold me initially. The ambi' safety gives me a little something extra to grab when I am racking the slide. Try one! (Or two...) -- Old Guy

Interestingly enough I bought my full size Beretta PX4 Storm in 9mm 4 years ago probably around the same time this review was done. Talk about how beauty is in the eye of the beholder, this was my very first handgun and I thought it was sexy. I mean c’mon it is made in ITALIA 🇮🇹 and looks loads better than a friken fugly Glock. Not to mention that I picked mine up for $400. Being my first handgun it did it all in terms of home defense and conceal carry. Since then I’ve evolved to other handguns for home defense as well as for my EDC. Primarily I graduated to Sig Sauers like the MK25 for home defense and the p365 XL for my EDC. Still, I find the Beretta with its 17+1 ammo capacity that only weighs 28oz to be a great alternative to conceal carry at times and a great back up duty gun especially with the 20rd extended magazines.

He watched Mac’s video where it failed the “gauntlet” after being submerged in water, then buried in sand and the action locked up. You know these YT operators. They see something fail in incredibly rare circumstances they’re probably never going to find themselves in so it must be crap.

I get a kick out of it when you, and especially sootch, check the trigger reset of pistols. It's just... lol, such an inconsequential thing that it's funny. It makes a difference to high level competitors I suppose, but otherwise who f'ing cares (well, besides keyboard warrior tools on the internet)? HURRRR MUH TRIGGER RESET. Pffffft

I love my PX4. Has anyone, that owns one, noticed how the PX4 sounds different than other pistols when fired?
