Too many Chinese green technology products? Not really, but still too few. Energy_mobility transitions should proceed rapidly in order to confront the Climate Crisis. Cheap solar panels, batteries and electric vehicles are indispensable to avoid a climate catastrophe. From a Washington perspective there are too many just because policy decisions were made to have low prices and low wages outside the West in order to have low inflation, environmental deregulation and a stable dollar even with enormous deficits. So it’s just harvesting what you sowed. (Aside, Mexico is a sovereign country and is willing to embrace the green energy transition. BYD’s plans to build a plant has not been cancelled.)

The US's main issue is it has failed to invest adequately in its own industries. It has also allowed ridiculous flight of capital to low/no tax regimes like Ireland. The end result is a loss of confidence and steady undermining of the country's capacity to produce high tech capital and consumer goods. This is shown in the many high end consumer goods coming from China that simply cant be matched by stuff produced in US, mainly because the US has not invested. Aggressive pro-investment strategies would likely turn things around.

You are bang on as to the OEMs getting most of their parts from China. This is true for their EVs and ICE cars equally. Sure GM gets a lot of stuff from Hyundai industries but most of the subcomponents, particularly electric ones like motors and switches and circuit boards, come from China first. Lock the door completely against Chinese imported cars and they are likely to say to the OEMs "No more parts". This will crash the OEMs and madly drive up their costs. If they can find a way to source the parts, after being shutdown for months and months, they will be more expensive and the OEM car prices will rise even further.

Isn’t one of the reasons electric cars are not profitable in China the price war that Tesla started? You could say that Tesla is a threat to Chinese car companies because they were flooding the China market with cheap cars with the obvious goal of driving those car companies out of business. That is what has made the prices unstable. All the undercutting in the price war is unsustainable for many companies, but of course this was the goal. However you didn’t see the Chinese getting all upset and saying they wouldn’t allow it even though it was a serious threat to their car companies.

The bottom line is the climate is going to revamp the world making areas livable and others not so much. Pollution continues to rise and illness will dramatically increase over coming decades if nothing is done to change course. She said it’s about saving jobs but truly it’s in the interest of CEOs of major companies by saving them. The ironic notion is jobs will increasingly be on the chopping block thanks to AI and automation. Job loss will be picking up speed over the next several years so really in the end Janet’s mission is not what it appears to be. Technology and climate change will have the final say as neither can be stopped. The question and concern then become how much time is left?
