The Type 81: Chinese AK + SKS Hybrid

Today we take a look at a super cool and rare piece here in the US. It’s China’s LMG that combines elements from the AK and the SKS known as the Type 81.

To the Americans frothing out the mouth wanting one cause its not easy to get, trust me, these things have numerous issues and aren't exactly better than getting a good AK (For reference the Type 81 LMG and regular T81 go for around 1500 Canuckistani dollars here). 1. QC is all over the place. I know people that got them with anything from shoddy grip screws to straight up bent barrels. 2. The iron sights (depending on your opinion) either slightly better than AK/SKS sights or just straight up worse. I am in the second camp. In fairness they are generally reliable rifles for the most part. We also had one time where we got a shipment of FA ones that got distrubuted and the feds had to confiscate.

Although all Canadians will know this already, the reason the Type 81 doesn't just take standard AK magazines is because they wanted the Type 81 to have a last round bolt hold open device which a regular AK magazine wouldn't actuate. So, new mag. AK mags can be modified to fit the Type 81, of course the BHO wouldn't work then but, gives you options.

SKS used to be my go to rifle in Escape from Tarkov. You start out with the original soviet SKS, top loading, hard to aim crosshairs, then you move up to later configurations and you get foregrips, sights, and 20 round mags. I fell in love with the SKS even though AK fires the same bullet with bigger mags. The SVT-40 could be a more interesting comparison because it fires the 54R round. but SKS would be interesting to see nonetheless.

Very nice video brandon! As a canadian,i am proud owner of the Type 81 LMG and also have the carbine Type 81 with fixed wood stock. A nice feature of the Type 81 is the adjustable gas system so they will eat any ammo 100% reliably. Type 81 carbine is also available with side folding stock. In fact the chinese went for the folding stock shortly after the Type 81 was adopted and production started. The rear trunion on the folder version are different than the fixed one so stocks cant be swap easily. The LMG use same trunion as the fixed stock carbine. The Type 81 use proprietary 30 rnds magazine but Ak mag only need a slight mod to fit the rifle but wont have the bolt hold open device as the OEM magazine. To sum up, they are very cool rifle to have!

In Canada, we modify AK mags to fit the Type 81. It's a very simple modification that just takes a few minutes because they're very similar mags. Only issue is you lose the last round hold open. If you ever get a chance to handle a side folder Type 81, you will learn that is probably the best side folder design ever.

Hello again brandon! This spring in Canada, 2 new versions of the Type 81 carbine came in. They called Type81M. Basically, think of the LMG without carrying handle and with 18.5 inch barrel instead of the 20,5 inch. Still the barrel is heavy contour. One version have a fixed wood stock, the other have AK style under folder. I wanted the fixed stock version but they sold out so fast, did'nt have time lol. The under folder remain available but i am not a fan of folder so i wait the next batch to get a fixed stock but will only come next year... The finish of the new version is not as nice as the blued LMG we got before but still guys up here enjoy them.

An earlier attempt of a concept similar to this, but operating on the mirror side of the spectrum, was the Type 63. It was more of a long rifle, but had fully automatic capabilities, and fired the 7.62x39mm as well. In a way it was similar to the AVS-36.

The 81 was born out of the necessity: the PLA was outgunned in the conflict with Vietnam at the end of 1970s and they were in a hurry to come out something “deemed better” than type 56 AK. So they blended AK and SKS in a hurry and field serviced this around early 1980s. It was supposed to be an interim solution until it was well received before type 95. Actually most of the PLA still had type 56 until 1990s.

Wouldn’t really say the Chinese were outgunned, more like they lacked any type of actual combat experience going up against Vietnam that had been fighting a perpetual conflict since before WW2 at that point, but also Vietnam having the best of modern captured US equipment at the time also likely helped tremendously

The big piece of context missing here is how the PLA operated their weapons; unlike every other commie country with AKs, China continued to use the SKS as it's primary infantry weapon, only issuing the AK to leadership and other roles similar to a SMG, much like how the soviets initially issued them. However unlike the soviets, the Chinese LOVED the SKS due to how they believed the rifle was more accurate than the AK was. They realized they wanted a rifle that combined both as early as the 1960s, with their first attempt being the even rarer rifle known as the Type 63. That rifle had many problems in service that resulted in them being recalled from active duty and the SKS and AKs were once again issued. Then, like you said, the border conflicts happened, with the Chinese realizing really quickly an army of mostly SKS rifles doesn't do that well against an army of battle hardened AK wielders lmao and that's when they decided to make a proper replacement via the type 81.

Which funny enough the Type 95 is also a stop gap interim measure that was rushed into service to be able to be present for the 1997 reclamation of Hong Kong. It’s not until the new QBZ-191 came along that we got something the Chinese really wanted and even then, they’re realistically gonna be fielding the 95 for decades to come. Ironic really, the Chinese have been manufacturing AR/M16 copies for decades and eventually settled to use an AR style rifle, could’ve saved a lot of time and money if they just used what they already had.

He's single handedly slaying the aftermarket for the only AK like rifle (Valmets are too damn rare and too damn expensive here) in Canada. Herrera needs to get in contact with Sigmaco and give this Sigma Chad a shout out.

I remember in 2004 when I bought my AK-47 it was $400 but it came with collapsible stock 3 mags 30 rounders a bayonet and 200 rounds of Wolf Ammo!! the gun store was running a deal at the same time u could get an SKS and 500 rounds of ammo for 200 bucks. Now I'm glad I bought my AK but I wish I would have picked up an SKS back then also. Of course that was when 7.62x39 was $3 bucks a box lol

Hey Brandon, I was wondering if you were able to do a video about the M78 Valmet one day. My father mentioned to me that his dad had multiple of them decades ago (chambered in 308) growing up and that it was his favorite rifle of all time. I would really love to learn more about it if you are able to possibly find one, because I know they are also rare.

I always wanted to combine features to make the "ultimate AK". Short stroke gas piston like the Type 81 or FN FAL, bulged trunion/receiver like the Yugo M70, left-hand charging handle like the FAL, AR-style dust cover, AR-style selector, titanium receiver, FAL-style adjustable gas block, Yugo gas cut off and flip up grenade sight, AK-100 series style muzzle brake/flash hider with rifle grenade tension ring, HK style rear drum sight, hinged dust cover with Picatinny rail, super steel alloy fluted heavy barrel, polygonal rifling and Stellite 6K lined bore, flip up tritium night sights, and it's available as a standard rifle, Krinkov carbine, RPK, and DMR configuration in 5.56mm NATO, 5.45x39mm, 7.62x39mm, 6.8mm SPC, 6.5mm Grendel, 7.62x51mm NATO, 6.5mm Creedmoor, and .277 Fury.

From a generalized manufacturing perspective across most industries, I would completely agree. But having a little understanding of the customer base for the AK industry (or at least the kind of customers I typically see at my day job building out mil-surp parts kits) you could easily wind up hard pressed to find a market for such a thing. Not saying that it wouldn't be kickass. But the majority of customers are wanting to recreate something as close to how it was originally done given the particular model, & they fall deep into that rabbit hole lol crazy requests for doing stuff via certain methods come in all the time just bc they heard "thats how it was done at the factory". But yeah your idea would make a sweet personal project, but would be a hard sell against the cheaper and proven ole' faithful I would think. But by all means, if you wind up doing some shit like this let me know, cuz I'd sure be intrigued with seeing something like that out of pure curiosity.@@Swindle1984

You should acquire this Type 81 from your friend and turn it into select-fire like it should be. Huge fan of both Ak's and SKS's equally to be honest. The Type 81 is definitely one of my most favorite AK-style variants.

  • @FirstLast-to6nj

One thing I don't think was mentioned, you can modify AK mags to work in the t81, lots of Canadians do it because we can still get the mags and they are more common than t81 mags. It requires filing down some part of the mag to make it work, look it up if your gonna do it. Something to think about for Americans who are lucky enough pick up one of these guns and want high capacity and more quantity of mags.

I had the pleasure of shooting the fixed stock version of this firearm. It's not an AK obviously but for a semi auto in 7.62x39 other than an SKS I was extremely ecstatic, it's such a cool gun. Have you heard about the Type 81 SR version? It almost looks like a Dargunov SVD and I think you would find it cool. Btw, not surprised about justin being castro's son. I would say it's time to vote him out but voting is likely as useful as gun control in the first place.

The sks, and its german kompressor counter part are fun to shoot, i cant give an accurate account of power as i was 8 when i first handled both, but i do remember both were rather light compared to a my dads remmington 30.06, and the recoil was not bad at all, i was able to keep 5/10 on the milk jugs we had set up, so an average adult shouldnt have any problems keeping a nice tight grouping at 100yrds
